AMD Seemingly Working on Cryptocurrency-focused Navi 10 GPU

Is cryptocurrency still a thing?

Mining is not like it was in 2017, top gpus in 2017 used to make $10 per day, right now top gpus like rtx 2080ti hardly make $1 per day. So you pay 1200 usd and earn 1 usd per day. I like the idea amd wants to create a gpu for blockchain but for it to be successful, it needs to be much cheaper than equal hashrate gpus that have display. AMD needs to understand that if the blockchain gpu is the same price as the on blockchain and yet does the same hashrate then forget, people will always prefer the gpu with display as it can resell to gamers later on.

Also gpu without displays need to have a better warranty than 3 months, gpus with displays have 3 years, so why people will buy specific gpus for blockchain that are not cheaper than gpus with display and offers 10 times less warranty time. No Deal.

climate change full steam ahead! ah humans and their hubris, amusing

Not trying to be a dick, but why is it in any way amusing?

because it will be a miracle if we can reverse climate change, and yet the new currencies that require mining generate more electricity than even some first world countries. if you add in all the people who mine lightly just for fun or as experiment, that compounding interest adds up fast.

If there is really a legal reason for cryptocurrency, why can't the processing power be used to solve really important problems such as COVID -19, world poverty, making better batteries, quantum physics etc?

And why should the owners of that processing power do that? I mean, it would be great if they did it out of their own free will, but forcing them to do it through laws is quite immoral.

My point was the incentive (reward) was the solution of real problems not just solving artificial crypro problems. No government mandate required.

mother nature will show us who gets the last laugh. we will see within our lifetimes sadly.

Yeah, well, not everyone thinks that's rewarding enough. And then there are problems that simply can't be solved by throwing computers at it...

It would be really ironic if humanity reached the point of learning how to manipulate the entire universe at will

Then again, I'll probably become something even less significant than dust in the wind before that happens...

PS: If I become a ghost or something after I die, I'm definitely staying around to watch either the end of humanity or whatever alternative route it takes, hope there is ghost popcorn at least

The currency would need to designed such that units are earned by solving key portions of the real problem. Hell you wouldn't expect people to be altruistic.

windwhirl I'll save you a seat at my table at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe. I think we'll be having steak.

I'm glad optimistic people like you still exist. We can't even get basic things passed at the local, state, federal, or United Nations global level, the entire system is broken, everyone owes everyone trillions of dollars, and the borrowing system from one country to another is basically a pyramid scheme. I fully expect we will see climate change cause mass migration and collapse of entire economic systems as we know it, within 50 years if not much sooner. Relying on the mono-crop industry to feed us was a huge huge mistake, and there is really no turning our backs from it at this stage.

Paper money would like to have a word with you.

Would be nice if they used the processing power generated to calculate those bitstuff for better purposes. Dunno if this could be a business model.
Like for each work completed in Folding@home it would give you one unit of cryptocurrency. Something like that.

Thank you AMD, this will get you sales and keep the damn crypto criminals from griefing the GPU market.

I have to be, at least part of the time, otherwise I would fly into murderous rage, suicidal depression or both

The rest of the time I'm a pessimist, so that I can't be disappointed too much too often :p. I might even get happily surprised at an unexpectedly positive turn of events.

Happens everywhere. And depending who you ask, people might want the UN to either cease existing or have some of its powers/functions stripped away.

The climate change thing is probably going to happen, mass migration? Maybe. Depends on where people live at the time, though I would actually move a few hundreds of miles south because this city is starting to get super annoying during summer. I can barely think straight with the heat, and I'm not even near the tropics.

Whatever happens with the economic system, I hope it's not communism or anything like that, and that it comes with a lot less politicians and bureaucracy.

And food... well, that's gonna be a big question, what with the growing number of mouths to feed and the fact that an important amount of food is wasted. The problem is gonna be solved very creatively or in a very practical way (read=war).

I heard the view from there is quite mind-boggling :D

Makes me wonder how long it would take for someone to ruin that idea with some hack. There's always someone.

That... remains to be seen.

Nope, sounds like a different chip, but without the video engines the chip will be smaller and cheaper to produce.

"The device ID is reported as 0x731E, and Phoronix says that the major difference between this graphics card and the other Navi 10 offerings in the market (namely RX 5700XT and RX 5700) is the absence of Display Core Next (DCN) and Video Core Next (VCN) engines. "

Completely disabling (laser cutting) DCN and VCN silicon inside for more compute wattage headroom makes sense, but doing a redesign of NAVI10 and a new tape out on 7nm TSMC? Not really.

Currently a 7nm tape out at TSMC costs a couple hundred million dollars, plus I highly doubt AMD would waste 7nm waffer space on two NAVI10 designs just to sell one of them off to the Crypto market.

So I'm guessing this is sort of a soft EOL of NAVI10 cards. RDNA2 offerings are soon out on this price bracket and probably by the time NAVI23 gets around the corner they want they ~230-250mm2 die size space relatively empty of RX 5600 XT / 5700 / 5700 XTs. They do not want older RDNA1 offerings competing in the market segment.

Thing is they won't be cheap if miners go for them en masse.
That will depend on how effective and efficient they are. If they're solid performing at mining then yes they'll go like hotcakes and be hard to find. If they don't perform well, then not so much.

Is cryptocurrency still a thing?

This is what people don't get.

Yes it is, and yes it always will be.

The question is whether or not it will be in demand enough this season to affect GPU prices. So far it has not been.

because it will be a miracle if we can reverse climate change, and yet the new currencies that require mining generate more electricity than even some first world countries.

Not really man. That was during peak. Crypto is probably at an all time low, energy consumption wise. The market just isn't happening.

Thing is, crypto doesn't need that level of involvement from mining to be useful. It's actually detrimental to the world for that to happen.

If there is really a legal reason for cryptocurrency, why can't the processing power be used to solve really important problems such as COVID -19, world poverty, making better batteries, quantum physics etc?

There are coins that do some things. Not very successful because they don't payout well. The rest can be attributed to greed.

mother nature will show us who gets the last laugh. we will see within our lifetimes sadly.

This is true but it's attributable to way more than crypto. We burried ourselves way before this.

Thank you AMD, this will get you sales and keep the damn crypto criminals from griefing the GPU market.

AH yes, I remember when I was a crypto "criminal.' Was fun, hacking the internet for money...

Oh wait, that was the C&C generals internet cafe building for China. I get confused easily.

That will depend on how effective and efficient they are. If they're solid performing at mining then yes they'll go like hotcakes and be hard to find. If they don't perform well, then not so much.

There isn't really a thriving GPU coin left. I doubt if these were 10x more effective at one of the algos, people would spring for these over an ASIC. It just is over in that regard.

Greed is the overwhelming driving force of humanity

Driving us to our doom, yes.
