This generation's GPU release is shaping up to be one of the most interesting in late years; for some good reasons, and bad reasons alike. We've heard - keep in mind, not seen - NVIDIA back down from multiple graphics card releases (the double VRAM versions of RTX 3070 and 3080 come to mind); postponing the RTX 3070 until after they have gleaned exactly what AMD will be offering with their RX 6000 series; preparing to launch an RTX 3060 Ti with no announcement whatsoever and before the RTX 3060 is ever launched; and now, apparently, the company is readying a response to AMD's as-of-yet-unannounced RX 6000 series in the form of the RTX 3080 Ti.

Recent performance leaks have placed an unclear AMD GPU (and apparently, not even the fastest Big Navi chip at that) at the same performance level as NVIDIA's RTX 3080, which is a tremendous increase in performance for the red team, coming from years of only being able to effectively compete in the midrange offerings. Now, Kopite7kimi, a known leaker with a proven track record, has claimed that NVIDIA is already prepping a new GA102-based graphics card, sitting in performance between the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090. He lists identifies the GPU as GA102-250-A1, 9984FP32, 384bits GD6X - let's call it the RTX 3080 Ti. If those details are correct, this is yet another product demanding the same 628 mm² GA102 GPU be available for it - in a scenario with inadequate availability of the RTX 3080, 3090, and likely 3070 Ti graphics cards already, should that later one actually materialize. The memory bus on this prospective RTX 3080 Ti is apparently inheriting the same design as the RTX 3090, with a 384-bit solution (compared to the RTX 3080's 320 bit), and likely 12 GB of GDDR6X memory.

So a 12GB 3090? Sounds desperate...

There isn't much of a gap between the 3080 and 3090. Wonder what the price will look like. 15% performance is a gap between 3080 and 3090 so if NV is gonna settle in the middle then the card will be what 7% faster than 3080? Maybe more Vram like 12GB. The gap in price between 3080 and 3090 is huge so I wonder, what the new card's price will be? $1k? more? for the 7% or around performance increase that wouldn't be so great.

GD6X?
Did he just make that up?

@Raevenlord

"This generation's GPU release is shaking up" => shaping up

I think he means GDDR6X it's just a short or misspelled. Everyone knows what he meant.

It's a disguised price reduction for the 3090. Nvidia does not do straight price cuts, they just do Supers instead, where they give you the better die at the price of the lower die.

This new card is going to be cut down 3090 as I suppose. It won't be rebranded 3090 that's for sure. I wouldn't be surprised if the price was $1200 for the 3080 TI or whatever it will be called.

Depending on the price and performance of the RX 6900 it might be just symbolically cut down and closer to 1k. And given how soon they are thinking about this (and abandoning the double RAM variants), I reckon they do not think they are competing well with Radeon.

It should be common knowledge by now that when SKUs like this appear it means that probably Nvidia has enought defective 3090 cores that they can't sell as 3090s but it also doesn't make sense for them to sell them as 3080s . Nothing more nothing less . Don't get me wrong im not saying such SKU makes sense especialy considering the already tiny performance gap between the 3080 and 3090 BUT this being said peoples have to stop with their 4D mental gymnastics .

Called this a while ago  .
With 12GB GDDR6X at 21Gbps, this 3080 Ti can easily leap frog over the the 3090. Offering 50% over the 2080 Ti is good enough to be called the true sucessor.

$1200 for 3080Ti is an overkill for me as it is. No matter the AMD's 6900XT price to be honest. It's a continuation of the Turing hugely overpriced cards.
$1k is an overkill as well to be honest.

They don't have enough cores of any kind, availability is very low for both 3090 and 3080. And rumors coming from resellers seem to point out that it's the same for the 3070.

Not that I am %100 showing off, but also to show the reaction of Earthdog when said that a while ago

Good job AMD announces the cards tomorrow. Then we can all stop guessing. Mostly.

2 - 5% improvement over 3080? or surpassing 3090?
Epic Failed. Lmao

hope AMD has stock, otherwise we will have the battle of the ghost GPU's...put an order for an ASUS TUF 3080 on 17th of Sept, still in the queue...If AMD has stock and the performance is good enough I will go AMD

The RTX 3080 hasn't once been in stock in Portugal. It's pretty extreme.

Same in Norway. All the 3000 series GPUs availability scheduled for January 2021. At least the last time I checked.
