Alienware has decided to equip its desktops with fast Blu-Ray burners so that you can write a 50GB Blu-ray disc two times faster. Currently their desktop line up includes 2X BR writer. Now buyers of Area-51 7500, Aurora 7500, Area-51 ALX, and Aurora ALX will have option of choosing BR drive at an additional cost of $600.

I bet that the reason Dell uses Blu-Ray exclusively is that Sony gave them a good deal on batteries for doing so...

The whole thing is so backhanded. With the latest production company going to all HD-DVD (even though blu-ray is outselling...).

IMO its pretty cut-throat right now. The major players (Sony/M$) are doing EVERYTHING in their power (and seemingly un-ethical business moves) to 'win'.

Beta-max v VHS all over....and beta had better video quality

Funny thing is, even though I was around for the whole betamax vhs deal, I dont even remember it. I do know we wound up with a VCR and never looked back. Seems the prices of an included drive are even coming down. when they hit $150 bucks, we will see a serious growth.

Yeah, but until then....we're just going to see more news about how they're doing. Personally, I wouldn't get one until there's a clear cut winner.

Or just buy a combo drive.

2x faster, that just means 5 hours to write 50gb instead of 10 hours.

has anyone actually tried a blue ray writer? what are the burn times for 25/50gb discs?
