Gabe Newell, one of the more popular directors of Valve Steam, recently berated Microsoft on it's choice of making DX10 Vista exclusive. A recent Steam survey shows that only 2% of gamers own both at least one DirectX10 capable graphics card and Microsoft Windows Vista. Newell also pointed out that none of the next-generation consoles use DirectX 10 features, limiting DX10 support. It would seem as though there is a general consensus among gamers and developers is nicely summed up by The Inquirer:
(DirectX 10) fractures an already-diverse PC gaming market even more, making consoles look even more attractive. One only has to look at Bioshock - the PC version has staggering requirements, barely any image quality upgrade under DX10/Vista, as well as installation issues - whereas the Xbox 360 version plugs in and works.

Nice... Good someone else put it in their face!

This is an open and frank criticism... and I fully agree with Gabe Newell (co-founder and managing director of game development company Valve Corporation). Let's MS spends a bit of time making a DX10 runtime for XP/2003. Or at least, makes a DX9.5 that adds the new shaders support. That way many features of the new GPUs can be made available to XP/2003 owners.

They should cut their dead ends, stop the release of vista, support it and start working on something COMPLETELY NEW! BRAND NEW!!

I mean fresh code from the start, I don't want to see the same programming for the login control!

... oh yes, and Gabe Newell is a heavyweight in the industry. LOL

Your saying his opinion isn't worthy because he's over-weight? If that's not what your saying, you're still laughing at and discrediting a person based on that person being over-weight. Simply a stupid post.

i find nothing wrong with it as long as they also have Dx9 in the games

Read lemonadesoda's previous post, he was agreeing with the guy and saying the guy knows what he is talking about, think you missed the joke somewhere.

I agree very much...

Valve is a company, and a fairly large one, and it only takes a few to say
"heh microsoft you are being retarded"
"so take your dx10 sdk's and shove em where the sun doesn't shine"

And microsoft will be pretty much forced to release it for XP/2003 otherwise
these companies will start to look elsewhere and step away from directX.

Indeed, and that elsewhere will be OpenGL (IMO).

yow, anyone remember how long it took for xp to become a "standard"? and it wouldnt be so much if it wasnt for those damn OEM's

I honestly hope companies start moving to OpenGL, runs under Linux and MacOS perfectly.

Plus OpenGL is "open aka opensource"

Talk about savings of money and adding easier migration for linux/mac os game releases...

And wow what would happen to the MS xbox! *glad I don't own one*

A lot of those "damn OEM's are offering XP, and in a lot of stores around here new shelf systems have XP, they took the vista machines down.

I agree with this guy. Even my mate who bought an 8800GTX didn't buy Vista because he didn't like it. Call him stupid all you like but he didn't want to be forced into buying DX10 software just because Microsoft want him to buy their new OS. Out of me and my PC mates 0/6 have a DX10 card & Vista. 1/6 has a DX10 card, and 0/6 have Vista- Steam is probably right- and we're all enthusiasts.

True true, I have recently build 7 machines with various DX10 cards, 4 of which were gamer machines that wanted Xp Pro over Vista. ALL of them went out the door with Xp.

Xp *with the dx10 support though*
AlkyProject FTW! :)

LOL. Why are you projecting your insecurities at me and turning my light-hearted double-entendre into a direct insult at my post. I suggest you stop drinking so much coffee and go relax. :slap:

P.S. As part of my psychological research studies, could you please post your weight so I can analyse a correlation between mass and comment. I believe there is a square root relationship.

0/10 of ma peeps have vista or dx10 cards

When it comes to Vista...I wouldn't say it's the worst OS Microsoft has ever made. However, MS's desicion to make DX-10 Vista only is because MS is greedy for money. They are so greedy for money that most things MS releases arn't the complete verison. IE: Vista: Home Basic, Home Premium, Buisness, Ultimate; XBOX 360: Core, Pro, Elite. MS is a very greedy company!

Eh its the worst or second right there with ME...

U DA MAN:laugh:

open GL3 ftw! and no doubt it will support all formats, with dx10 being vista only it is certainly the right time for openGL to come back and takeover.

Keep it clean and calm please, this is a debate, not a free-for-all.

It would be nice to see honestly.

That's what we need: more "powerful game industry guys" like Gabe Newell to tell them what they don't want to admit.
2007 is a chaotic year for the PC... :
- Vista was released too early,
- There isn't much support even today by the major software and hardware companies, probably because of the complexity of the code
- DX10 video cards are pretty mediocre, their performance is quite poor when using DX10,
- Vista is too expensive and is quite "heavy",
- There is already plans to a new Windows... it's ridiculous

They really expect that we pay so much for such a bunch of problems? :banghead:

I think Valve and other game companies have to think about focusing on DX9, let the hardware market cool down, see what happens and only then think seriously about the chaos a.k.a. "DX10 and Vista".
Like they say: "Steam survey shows that only 2% of gamers own both at least one DirectX10 capable graphics card and Microsoft Windows Vista". Gamers are not stupid, like M$ would like.
NO to xbox, NO to Vista. They don't control us, we have brains. :nutkick: And we have allies (like Gabe Newell). :rockout:

I weigh 150 pounds, and I'm 5'10. It has nothing to do with me, mostly to do with your comments my friend. I'm the guy who thinks about other people when I say something, you must be the other guy.

Also, in my opinion ME was the worst OS from MS to date.
