An add-in card partner source shared with VideoCardz some juicy details about a pair of upcoming high-end GeForce RTX 30-series "Ampere" graphics cards. Called the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti and GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, the two are aimed to restore NVIDIA's competitiveness against the likes of AMD's recent Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs. It looks like NVIDIA doesn't want to play the memory size game just yet, despite giving the RTX 3060 12 GB of it.

The GeForce RTX 3070 Ti appears to be maxing out the GA104 silicon and carries the ASIC code "GA104-400-A#." The current RTX 3070 enables all but one of the TPCs on the GA104, working out to 5,888 CUDA cores. The new RTX 3070 Ti probably maxes out the GA104 to its CUDA core count of 6,144. The more substantial upgrade, however, is memory. The card ditches 14 Gbps GDDR6 for fast GDDR6X memory of an unknown speed—probably higher than 16 Gbps. The memory size remains 8 GB, across 256-bit.

The GeForce RTX 3080 Ti is a different beast. The card is based on the same GA102 silicon as the RTX 3080, but carries the ASIC code "GA102-225-A#." compared to the "GA102-200-" of the RTX 3080. This to us hints at the likelihood of the RTX 3080 Ti featuring only slightly more TPCs than the RTX 3080; with much of its design effort focused on memory. The card gets 12 GB of GDDR6X memory, maxing out the 384-bit memory interface of the GA102.

The source expects a mid-April launch for the RTX 3080 Ti, as the RX 6800 series and RX 6900 XT irk NVIDIA more. The RTX 3070 Ti, on the other hand, could see a late-May launch.

Perhaps it means on miners' shelves.

Anyway, the rumored specs have been floating around for a long time. Till I see the finalized specs, I think this case change at anytime. While there is lesser ram in this variant, to me it is the better specs because we get higher memory bus, resulting in a higher memory bandwidth. And I feel 12GB should suffice in any new games as oppose to 20GB which is an overkill for gaming. Unless you are using for specialized purposed outside of gaming, then a higher VRAM makes more sense.

Big N is just fu...messing with us now, seriously what is the point of these, literally everything sells already, there is no need for a new SKU...
(well...more money I guess by making these more available then the others and claiming they are innocent of the entire thing, much better then just upping the MSRP prices out of nowhere I guess....)

That new super meh stagnation RX6700XT will also sell like crazy because nothing is available.

It is probably the worst time for AMD to start flexing some muscle and competing in the high end, if there ever was a time that wasnt necessary.....

GA104 works on 256 bit wide bus so unless they start using ridiculously defective GA102 dies which I highly doubt, There's no option but to stick with 8GB.

... other than to make it 16GB, you mean? Like the competition?

That would get NVIDIA in a weird position like the 3060 did relative to the 3060 ti. Also by that logic the 3080 ti would've been a 20 gb card as outdated leaks were pointing out a while back but no they're stubborn about it :(

Just wanted to point out that if you put 8 (resp. 12) on a card, one could also put 16 (resp. 24) on it. Neither choice would particularly surprise me coming from Nvidia, they have a track record of suprising their early adopters with later offerings. Personally, I've been preparing to upgrade from my 1080 Ti for some time now, I have my eye on the 3080 Ti and, while I understand I don't particularly need 24 GB of VRAM for gaming, 12 GB sounds stingy on what will likely end up being a $1000 MSRP product in mid 2021.

built my system few months ago so it can be ready to accommodate 3070/Ti and it just comes to this one, let's see what the RTX 40 series gives, had to play my backlog and emulators anyway

Undoubtedly, the 3060 blob will not upload into a 3080 Ti.

Here's a crazy idea how about concentrating on cranking out the skus you already offer rather than wasting time and effort on new skus no one will still be able to buy!

I can understand the 12GB 3080TI as it's basically a 3090 with half the memory, but to have a 3070 Ti still offering 8GB when this will easily be a $550-570 RRP card is a joke for a card competing against the 16GB 6800 non XT. I don't knopw if they can do a GA-104 with a 320 bit bus but they have backed themselves into a corner. If it were a 320 bit 10GB card then it would make sense and just get rid of the 3080 and sell the Ti version to create clear demarcation in performance.

Well it will be 8GB of GDDR6X so it will be at least “faster” but also will be hotter but I cant disagree 8GB is still an odd choice for the tier.

GDDR6x is of questionable value. A lot dearer than GDDR6 and runs hotter and uses more power. A 16GB GDDR6 version would be a lot better, as the Ti will basically the full GA-104 die anyway. Already there are some 4K games choking on 8GB.

Well, if the specs are correct on the 3070Ti; it's going to be a small performance bump over the 3070 for $100 more and the gap will be far from the 3080., There is definitely room for more performance to sit well between the 3070 and 3080 performance-wise but given the state of the market, nVidia couldn't care less and it's going to be a rip-off, of course, I doubt that is a surprise today.

Or miners can just plug in a dummy HDMI plug. That seems to work too.
It doesn't, you need that beta driver as well. The TPU article about the plug failed to mention that.
