AMD Releases Barcelona Pricing

AMD plans to launch nine new quad-core processors later this month with clock speeds ranging from 1.7 GHz to 2.0 GHz. The initial launch will only have two thermal bins, 68-Watt and 98-Watt TDP. AMD's two-way capable quad-core Opteron 2300 series launch with five new models. Pricing for the two-way capable models start at around $206 and go up as high as $372. On the multi-way side of things, AMD has four quad-core Opteron 8300 models starting at a $688 entry price all the way up to $1,004. Desktop users will have to wait until Q4 of 2007 for AMD's Phenom to experience quad-core.

Those are actually really low clock rates, i hope the chip does alright. The faster amd's chips are the cheaper intels gets and vice versa.

The four+ way capable parts seem priced quite fairly. Xeon MP's often cost a lot more. If performance isn't too bad they could actually be interesting, memory performance should be better than the current Intel 5000 series anyway.

It looks like the server based chips will be released very soon but retail chips (ie for the desktop market) will be released in Q4.

Quite frankly AMD need to pull their finger out and just released the damn things and quit with the paper releases.

That's because you don't read. Desktop users have to wait, the 9 released CPU's are Barcelonas, ie workstation/server chips. It clearly says so.

68W Quad for $207

We will have to wait for performace reviews, but I would not be suprised if AMD's 1.8 GHz Barcelona performs close to the Q6600 and the X3220

i dont mind the wait either, gives me the time to raise some funds for a new mobo, ram and the bleedin phenom chip ergh.. * tries to forget 3 birthdays, xmas and an annaversary this december...

Yes, like others have said, the Barcelona chips are mainly for server use while the upcoming Phenoms are for desktops use.

Dont forget the fact that the 2P and 4P processors that you see here are not initially going to scale as far as the 1P units, so even though these chips top out at 2ghz, there is no reason to think the desktop versions (the phenom X4 series) wont launch at higher speeds, most roadmaps indicate that the Phenom X4 GP-7000 and GP-7100 quad cores will run at 2.0-2.2ghz (7000) or 2.2-2.4ghz (7100), with faster chips available early next year, but I doubt the x4s will scale much higher than 2.6, but with intel pushing 3ghz already it might and probably should happen.
Based on the opteron prices I would say peoples hopes should be pretty high for the phenom line, though performance is not set in stone all "leaked" information seems to indicate that good things are ahead, and with intel forcing the price of quad cores down to almost $260, AMD will have to launch with competitive pricing, or one hell of a performance advantage.

Even if these initial releases are a bit slower, a cheap quad core is still a quad core. Remember when we were talking about Pentium D vs Athlon X2? The Pentium D 805 was nothing compared to the X2s, but hell it was a $100 dual core when AMD's cheapest was hovering around 2x or 3x that.
