Nobody saw this one coming—or going. AMD last night released the Radeon RX 6800 XT Midnight Black, a limited edition variant of the RX 6800 XT reference "Made by AMD" graphics card, sold-out directly through the company website. This card appears to be an aesthetic update, as it replaces all the matte silver bits on the cooler shroud with black. That's it...that's the product. The clock speeds are the same—2015 MHz game clocks—and so are is the core configuration, with 72 RDNA2 compute units. The card briefly appeared on the AMD store, allegedly, and disappeared before the first legitimate graphics card buyer could lift a finger.

I sat and clicked on the "Add to cart" button for a full hour, even before the listing was public, and never got it into my cart. The button basically wasn't real if you were in a region where no cards were available, but they gave you the button to click on just to make you feel like you had a chance.

The only two eBay listings. The original 6800 XT had dozens after the first hour. Shows how even fewer cards they had to offer.

Yay scalpers

Welp, plenty of stuff in stock, although, pricing is, cough-cough:

Classy poke, fair and on point.
Oh wait...

I would just pass by, if I didn't remember the bitching about "only couple of thousands" of 6700XT allegedly heading to EU, to later see Mindfactory roll out 1.5k of 6700XT in a single week.

Hey, I'll poke whoever I want but so far AMD is shitting all over EU. 6800's and 6900's were nowhere to be seen for two months from launch. When they were available they were priced at nearly €200 over the price of Nvidia offerings (back then 3080's went for €900+ and 6800 XT's were already at €1100). Since launch 6700 XT's were only available at Mindfactory, for €700+.

The reality for me is that 6700 XT's over here cost €1300 and are out of stock from day 1.
Edit.
Lowest is €1267

If mindfactory is getting any stock it's getting ALL (or 99.9% of) the stock for EU. And that means that those cards are only going to people in Germany and maybe Austria.

Mindfactory might have pushed 1500 6700XT's in a single week (at €800, which is utter bs) but now they have 10 units of single Asrock SKU:

The only valid alternative for EU is AMD direct, but even that is limited to 10 or so countries.

So yeah, 6700 XT's availability is nothing to me if I'm suppose to be paying way over double of what it's worth.

Why even bother with card appearance, noise levels, or product packaging, when noisy, ugly-ass cards in white boxes will sell just as quickly?

This is like motorcycles now. Remember when all black was just the cheap ass basic color. Now it's an up-charge for the el-cheapo colorway, "black edition". Basically, companies are figuring out how to cancel anything entry level, and all models are somehow up-charge specials. Witness how the base model graphics cards are truly unobtainable. I have really started to just keep my wallet in my pocket with respect to a lot of things (not just computers and electronics).

Most of us predicted that tastefully-styled simple elegance would eventually cost more. The RGBLED bandwagon has reached peak stupidity and now people are so sick of it and they'll pay good money NOT to have it.

Nice... releasing a limited edition card when all their cards are still basically mythical beasts. Pretty scummy.

Received the AMD Red email last night and was online exactly at 9am ET this morning as directed in the email, there was about 5 minutes where the card was available to order and I snagged one. It will be going in my son's gaming PC, so thank you AMD you made him very happy.

Nice try but Blacked-out computer parts or stuff in general costing alot more has pre-dated RGB for at least 10 years.

The "Midnight" edition was $649, the exact same price as the regular 6800XT on AMD's store.

I took it as the email notification that went out to Red Team members was received after 10pm ET last night, ie. the news went out right before midnight.

Anyone can sign up to be a Red Team member.

That's because back then, black was the "premium" upgrade over beige.
Hell, 20 years ago beige was the only colour. We had to spraypaint our own back then!

I was able to snag one of these cards. I am a legitimate gamer. This seems a little on the snarky side here.

I get it. These cards are hard to get.

You shoulda heard my cries of excitement when the order was confirmed and nearly a grand of my hard earned Canadian Dollars were exchanged for a receipt that said I was getting one of these cards.

I’ve managed to place an order for one today. Now let’s see if it comes through.

the problem is it doesn't matter, bots will have them bought up before your email notification even arrives. i assure there are thousands of computers that simply refresh constantly on every gpu site all over the world. cryptocurrency is the future a lot of people feel, since government keeps printing money and never paying it back, the assumption is it will all collapse. so there thousands if not millions of people going 'all in' so to speak on cryptocurrency.

there is no chance within next 18 months you will get a gpu. i could be wrong, but i don't think so, not this time... not after all the big banks, corporations, visa, mastercard, paypal, etc all accept bitcoin now... which means there will always be a altcoin to be mined tagging along...

this is the end of gpu gaming. i think we will see nvidia and amd pushing for cloud based gaming like GeForce now in the future.

screenshot or it didnt happen

cryptocurrency is the future

Thats such bullshit to the current ongoing issue. Cards are mass bought for mining purposes, which adds nothing genuine to the world at this moment now. Its just everyone for it's own where greed is put up front. Coins like BTC could only be (profitable ) mined with a proper asic. A GPU in this case is extremely waste of resources. So they all jump to ETH which is one of the few coins that allow mining by GPU's. The more ETH's are mined the more difficult these maths will become over time.

In a year, few years perhaps, the ETH market collapses and thus mining becomes no longer profitable. This means that the used market will be flooded with used cards. I hope really that that day happens soon enough, because at this point it will take quite a while before a new released generation of videocards could be even bought. It's nonsense if you ask me. Put all that power into something usefull for us or humanity. Not for mining a virtual coin.

I kept a couple Rustoleum colors out of stock at my local Ace Hardware back then. :D
(before Home Depot was a thing.)

Pressed F5 and out of stock
