Just curious what others who have this card or the 3xxx cards get with this setting. I've only just now noticed it because I was running an older version of HWinfo...but as I've quickly skimmmed the internet...seems a 20C difference between your high normal temp and hot spot temps is par for the course. Have only tested a few minutes running RE Village but it got as high as 100C which is crazy hot but also might be expected to be that hot all things considered.

My difference is not that big. 63C load temps and 74C hotspot temps. 11C difference. RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio.

At idle, it's a 1-2C difference.

This all at 42% fan speed.

Didn't repaste or even open up this card, so MSI did a great job on it.

Sounds like you need a repaste

Mine is around 17C at load and around 1-3C at idle. I've repasted and made sure everything is covered a lot of times. As always.. I made peace with it. Screenshot below is while I mine while working.

Also it is almost impossible to get GPU temp to match Hotspot temp. GPU temp is the geometrical mean of all the on die temp sensors. GPU die have different parts: I/O controller, cache, SM units, Tensor units and etc. Most likely those individual partition of GPU would not be loaded equally, and thus you wont be able to see GPU temp to equal hotspot temp.

Hotspot is a weird one.
it is not that a repaste is the magic "fix everything" method.

for example my 6900XT Nitro+
4K Gaming or Timespy: 65°C GPU, 95°C Hotspot
aida64 synthetic GPU stress.
75°C GPU 108°C Hotspot (throttling)

opened the card, repasted it with Kryonaut.
same temperatures as before (literally within 1°C)

ramp up the fans a bit.

Hot spot readings are as useless as Asic quality readings, it should be removed and save everyone the mental work overthinking about it

I too would like to know exactly how the GPU comes up with the temperature number and if it varies from brand.

based on previous AMD's explanation of hotspot versus reported temp. So an educated guess that Nvidia would employ similar matrix to report an average GPU temp as a mean over the sampling time window for all the sensors presented on the die.

Just my hypothesis

Thanks for pulling this up. Google search wasn't giving me any results. That said I'm not sure that article really states whether AMD actually uses a mean of all the sensors to calculate GPU temp. Specifically they say the following: ""worst case" throttling temperature for the entire die"

I'm not sure if that means they based entire die temp off a strategically placed sensor or if they used the mean / average of all sensors on the die. What is for sure is that the addition of hotspot temps is highly useful. It's not reporting unusually high temps, it's giving you information that simply wasn't present before. Previous GPU safe temps (like 92c for example) were built with the expectation that there is going to be hotspots with higher temps then what's being reported. Having access to hotspot temp info means you can directly assess whether the card is within a comfortable temperature range or not without the assumptions that are baked into regular GPU temperature.
