Microsoft Boss Teases "Next Generation of Windows" Announcement "Very Soon"

The new Windows will be a Linux distro running Wine, but with telemetry. Let the community sort things out!

It's expected that this "next generation of Windows" comes with a revamped Windows store experience

I hope that doesn't mean the store becomes more mandatory than it already is, because I avoid that thing like the plague.

In all seriousness, I think the store might get played down more. People don't use Windows for the convenience of the store, much like many MacOS users don't use the AppStore for purchases. When Windows 10 launched, MS still had a mobile platform, so the idea of a universal store seemed like it might take off. W10M turned out to be terrible, the platform died, and it became evident pretty fast that UWP and the Store were not major draws to Windows. Even dating back to Windows 8, the MS Store has been a relatively terrible experience. I remember times when it failed to install apps entirely, and the only way to fix it was to delete some random app and then reinstall it. It has never felt as reliable as anything from Apple or Android. The selection is lackluster, which makes me suspect demand is just as lackluster.

If MS ever gets rid of the ability to run programs at our own risk, I don't see how there's much of a future in the OS.

Why do I get the feeling us power-users and enthusiasts are not going to be pleased?...
Indeed

It would be nice if they sold win10 LTSC as 'gamer' windows or something................one thing I would pay the 'gamer' tax on.

Microsoft ya right like I trust them. I run WIndows 10 LTSC for the reason no store no cortana no garbage. Also I turn of the UAC so it cannot track or run. Been Seeing some 21h1 builds and man the crap now. One-drive built in even if you do not want it. Always pushes the user in using a Microsoft account and not a local account. Microsoft just loves to see everything your doing. Also the new Edge Wow like wow. Once installed it changes how windows updates are done and puts in services to make sure you cannot turn updates off.

I used to like MS products like 2000 XP and 7 heck even 8.1 was not too bad. But Windows 10 theres a new release every 6 months now. Each time they change something and make something else not work. Drives us System Admins crazy when something was there before and goes missing. Then we have to hunt around looking at all the changes to find something that was simple before now jump through 10 hoops of oh its pretty BS to find the actual setting we need.

I honestly miss the old Microsoft and the good ole days of Service packs. At least then it was tested by OEMs and other companies to make sure it worked. Now Microsoft has turned every PC running Windows 10 into a beta tester for free. Thus the reason for my LTSC which they do not release but once every 3 or 4 years after they have tested everything.

Amen!

So true I avoid the store too. Like if someone needs itunes for there phone it directs them to the store from Microsoft. ??? Huh apple directing to store by MS WTF. Search google itunes download no store and find direct link from apple site like why apple why.

I would bet MS paid Apple to do it, much like Google pays various browser makers to be the default search engine.

I think something like Aero is making its way back.

I will just wait a year or so before downloading it. I will let the people buy the version and be used by MS as beta testers.
If you've been using Win 10 you've been a BETA tester all along.
Think about it.

We need windows to release a debloated gaming OS :P

I held out as long as I could with Windows 7. Right before MS said was the cutoff date for any kind of support for Win 7. It took some time to get used to Win 10 but I did eventually. I don't know about the telemetry concerns but when I install Win 10 I check to not have Cortana running and don't send anything to MS except bug reports. Don't know if that did any good or not.

Again will never happen, called a XBox. And chances of Linux getting there for gaming that wont happen either even more so with MS having their hands in that too.

Been waiting some 12 years + ( being very conservative with that time )

I'm reading this as "look at the shiny in my right hand, and in my right, nothing more than intrusive advertising and more bloatware coming, we promise!"

Microsoft wouldn't know a "new generation" of Windows, even if it came and bit them on the ass. New Icons and altering some colors does not make a new generation.

There's just no excuse for MS not to have their own beta testers department. Last year they had a revenue of 143 billion dollars and a profit of 43 billion dollars. They are sitting a mountain of cash and cash equivalents of 136 billion dollars.

You know fully well both that Microsoft has a QA department and that they cannot test every possible configuration. Apple has more money than Microsoft, support only a handful of devices at any given time and still manages to slip bugs into macOS.
For all its flaws, Win10 is better than Win7 which in turn is miles better than XP.

This one is going to be their subscription based OS?

What do you mean?
Research what he said, and cry at what Windows lost, which for all intents and purposes is hardware accelerated audio.

Windows 10 audio subsystem is garbage.

Pretty much. Last year I was trying to stream HBO (i.e. no 4k, no HDR, no Atmos) using Windows and it failed miserably at keeping audio in sync. Because of DPC latency. The laptop was using an i5 that was ~3yo, so pretty much up to the task.
Failing that rather basic task, means the subsystem is pretty flawed.

I highly doubt it will have consistent UX, buried deep lies old program with ancient UI

I know it lost audio acceleration but I think you are overrating it.
I wouldn't be so sure that hardware acceleration would help with DPC latency.
Technically what is under the hood is great quality wise. Solved a lot of problems that acceleration had with crappy hardware and drivers.

Grease up and grab your ankles ...
