China Announces CH-DVD, a New High Definition DVD Standard

The Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center has announced CH-DVD, a new high definition DVD standard based on the HD DVD but with additional Chinese-owned technology tacked on. This advanced Chinese technology will prevent copying and pirating of CH-DVD content. A new foundation called the China High Definition DVD Industry Association will promote the new format and plan to launch a CH-DVD player in 2008.

If the copy protection works, it wont matter. Anyone in china who can afford an HDTV can afford to buy real copies of movies.

Everyone else, 99% of the country will continue using dvd-r's in SD.

Wow, the Chinese are retarded. People won't buy into this crap. Even if it does sell for less, I don't think Americans, Europeans, and especailly Japanese, will want something called Chinese-DVD. (I assumes CH is for China even tho CH is actually Swiss)

If its a real low ball price im sure it'll sell, but without big name backing I doubt they'd get first dibs on any big dvd releases, which means people would have to wait even longer to see their new releases on HD. Not a whole lot of negatives can really be said about adding more competition to a market like High Definition DVDs. If it means lower prices on the other formats some day Im all for it.

Since we are beggining to see HDDVD players for under 200$ made by companies other than Toshiba i dont think these standards can stand. Also this has been announced for almost 3 weeks now, engadget is a bit back in the news
