To state that the Steam Deck made a splash when it was announced is an understatement - interest in the portable handheld console with its tight Steam integration is still going strong even after initial orders and the now ubiquitous scalping shenanigans, with eBay sellers looking for some $5,000 just for the end user to take their Steam Deck from their reservation queue place. Interest in the Steam handheld has been so immense, in fact, that it seems that shipping of all versions - even the entry-level one with 64 GB of eMMC storage - has slipped to Q2 2022.

When the handheld was first announced back on the 16th of July, initial shipments were expected to be sent out by the end of this year. However, Valve has now updated its estimated availability, bringing about a few more months of waiting for anyone just entering the queue - and possible 2023 slippings for further reservations. The "after 2Q 2022" is as vague as it comes as well - these units could be shipped in the first day of the quarter or face a delay until the release of the Steam Deck 4 (since Valve will skip the number 3, of course). We'll have to see whether there are any delays for already-confirmed pre-orders, but for now, it seems that if you've locked in an earlier delivery date, your order hasn't been affected.

Mine remains Q1 2022. Hopefully, it doesn't slip. Most of those on Q2 beyond are probably scalpers who couldn't buy because of account age.

"bringing about a few more months of waiting for anyone already in the queue"

Um, sources? There doesn't seem to be Any complaining from reserved customers about their estimated dates being pushed back.

Edit: Good article revision; thanks for fixing that!

my 256GB says Q2 2022

I'm Pretty sure alot of these people don't even really know why they're buying it and are only doing so because of a large dose of irrational internet FOMO.

It still shows "December 2021" for me.

Mine is also still Q1 2022:

I delayed reserving mine until the 17th, but it still says Q2 2022.

man i ordered the same day but i got Q2

this is a good thing. we will get a flood of reviews etc, plenty of time for us to cancel are orders if as I suspect, this is very overhyped. I am keeping my preorder in until I watch several reviews though.

A fair point.

I'm honestly not sure I will enjoy this... even playing Portal on the go... like I mean I play portal at 165 fps 165hz ultra settings... going from that 60 fps with stuttering here and there since no freesync... eh...

for Indie games... I'd rather have the new OLED from Nintendo, at least then I am getting the best picture quality available in humanity. OLED is heaven. but again no nintendo first party titles really interest me, and I don't want to buy the same indie games again...

if this steam deck had an OLED screen I'd 100% be keeping it just so I could play my indie games in glorious OLED on the cheap.

I'm not butchering a switch or giving Nintendo my money, always been a Sega guy Soo, plus I just checked it's 336 game's that could work fine, or not, I'm buying to try what I want to on it , yes win 11 but yes Steam OS maybe just Linux for kicks, because I can, hopefully it's not shit though yes.

keep in mind most of the games your average person will be playing on this will drain the battery empty in 2-3 hours (my guess is only indie games etc make the battery last long)... lithium batteries don't last forever... within two years of charge cycles this will be dead in the water with no re-sale value, unless valve offers cheap battery replacements and its easy to replace said battery...

Nah I'll watercool it then and run it as a photoslide show, joke I hope this isn't built like an apple device personally, I'm fine with swapping laptop batteries but refuse to do phones or pads, can't be arsed with. That.

Somehow for me it looks like, everyone who ordered from techpowerup are going to sell them at scalping prices :D.

nah scalpers won't make anything off these. too niche. also not many people are willing to game at 30 fps in a high refresh world.

So the rest of the world that can't order it is just never going to be able to buy it probably.

Feels bad man, living in one those shitty regions.

I'll sell my Cue!

besides, I dont play billiards anymore....

I don't care about reviews. I won't be canceling

This really seems like a shitty idea, running PC games with awful performance hardware and low battery life.

The only reason I want a handheld this or the Nintendo OLED, is so I can be in bed with my "medical pillows" and still game comfortably. I have scoliosis, so being at desk all day is difficult sometimes, and I can't afford my own house yet, so getting a good recliner and hooking PC up to a nice tv is not an option yet either. Just no room for a chair bigger than a regular desk in my bedroom.

So everyones situation is different.

I am leaning toward the Nintendo OLED though to be completely honest... infinite blacks and beautiful colors make gaming so more immersive imo. I most likely will cancel my Steam Deck pre-order and keep my Nintendo OLED pre-order, I was lucky enough to get one in. Should be here October 10th or so. My town still has a rental store for games, so I can go rent Switch games for cheap, so the high price of Nintendo games really doesn't divert me too much thanks to this.
