Aya Neo announced an updated model of it's AMD-based handheld console by the same name at Chinajoy 2021. The Aya Neo 2021 Pro and Aya Neo 2021 Pro Retro Power will both feature 1 TB of storage as standard with a 2 TB model also offered. The Pro models feature an upgraded Ryzen 7 4800U processor with 8 cores and 16 threads up from the 6 core 12 thread Ryzen 5 4500U found in the regular model. This upgrade also increases the Vega graphics compute unit count to 8 and should provide a noticeable performance improvement. The Aya Neo 2021 Pro Retro Power features a NES-inspired color scheme and includes a special docking station for 100 USD more. Aya will also sell a GaN 108 W charger and mechanical keyboard with the same retro design. These new models are priced at almost double the 649 USD price of the 512 GB Steam Deck and are expected to start shipping in September.

yep even the $399 variant. some people are just absurdly rich though, so they will buy this anyway. that's the world we live in sadly.

Except onboard storage, but I still agree.
A 1TB Kioxia BG4 can be had for a fraction of the price difference though, and that leaves you with a spare SSD that you can stick in an external case and keep using.

For those who wish to compare, Linus recently did just that, taking an Aya Neo & a Switch on his visit to Valve to play with a Steam Deck.
He took peripherals too, including a monitor & his Nvidia-supplied hardware display lag widget

Instead of "just" an external case, what about that extremely useful-looking USB-C hub with the SSD slot that was on here last Friday?

That would have been useful, but that hub only supports SATA m.2 drives, so no dice there. I do kind of wish someone would make a direct plug-in m.2 2230 case though - it wouldnt' be much larger than a normal thumb drive, but could do so much more. (I guess one could always take a hacksaw to a longer case, but... yeah :p)

Except it uses thunderbolt and we're talking about an AMD based PC here. Don't know, how that hub would work with just a normal USB-C.

And some said the steam deck was too expensive.
They also said these things are underpowered , to me this is.
I wouldn't pay this price.

I hope they continue to remain successful enough to warrant increased production; the more portable consoles out there, the better overall for the market in terms of competition and pricing.

It would be even better if Sony can jump back into the portable console market with a PSP/PSV style successor, just with an upgradeable NVMe for game storage + SD cards for gamesaves. Microsoft too, could also jump into the ring with an Xbox Portable. Leverage some retro-ness with a "Win XP themed" Edition.

Meanwhile, I pity the Smach Z backers; it's now 2021 and Steam is releasing their own portable console that the Smach Z was supposed to be (able to play Steam games and side-load or emulate some others).

I do wonder how emulation compares; Steam Deck AFAIK doesn't allow side-loading, though I'm sure an emulation team might make it work, whereas the Aya Neo and GPD portables can do emulation.

Well, yes, but still a whole bunch cheaper than buying the 1TB Aya Neo. And you still have a more powerful handheld for far less money, only now with zero drawbacks.

I think since steam deck allows an OS swap, side loaded apps are not a problem IMHO.
Same with this Aya neo I think.

Your right though competition is key.

It's kinda hard to compete when they are new brand like this since they couldn't compete for the supply of Ryzen 5000 mobile, let alone like Valve who could outright asking for a brand new customized chip from AMD.

I'm surprised they didn't go with a Zen 3 apu but they must have had this refresh in the works before.

Would have alteast liked to see RDNA2 in it and not vega.

No need for an OS swap, the Steam Deck runs a customized Linux distro with a standard desktop environment available for those who want it, it just defaults to a Steam Big Picture-alike interface. You can just quit out of that and install whatever Linux software you want.
It's not, according to the article's comments. Apparently, it's just USB-C with PD.
Yeah, there's no mention of TB on the product page or packaging either, and I think marking TB devices with the logo is mandatory.

That might have required a cooler redesign due to the larger die size of Zen3 APUs. Plus, of course, they might be in too short supply. Of course they could have gotten their hands on some Zen2 5000-series APUs instead, as those should be near identical in die size to the 4000-series while having improved efficiency - though I'm guessing the 4000-series are much cheaper than these at this point in time.

Except in pure CPU. The scaling won't be terrible good for multithreaded workloads but in the end, it will be really quite better.

Unless Van Gogh has some hidden trick in their sleeve like more cache than a Renoir CCX, some system level cache or whatever that could reduce the difference between the two.

The number of games that are CPU limited at this performance level is tiny, so I doubt that will matter whatsoever in real life.

Emulation though. You are right in most cases, just that Steam Deck will have one weakness against competitors, do note that it's still a PC so you can use it to other things(aside from gaming) and those would like more CPU juices.

I'm surprised they didn't go with a Zen 3 apu but they must have had this refresh in the works before.

Would have alteast liked to see RDNA2 in it and not vega.

Vega on full hd - 30fps gaming mainly, but depends on game. Can achieve even 100 or more. 720p - stable 60 fps.

Nintendo give me new switch with acceptable hardware. 4k - 60fps with native.
