During a recent concert, Nine Inch Nails lead singer Trent Reznor decided to let his fans know exactly what he thought of CD prices.
STEAL IT. Steal away. Steal and steal and steal some more and give it to all your friends and keep on stealin'. Because one way or another these mother****ers will get it through their head that they're ripping people off and that's not right.

Universal Media is not very pleased with Trent Reznor's comments. You can see the full version of the rant here.

I agree... £7.99 isn't really fair for a piece of plastic with a magnetic surface or w.e that costs 20p to produce.

Just goes to show how much people hate CD prices why can't these music companies get it through their heads that they don't need all these millions if not billions of dollars to create music. Music should come from the soul not from greed.
And when you think about it it would be nice if CD prices were just $4.99 instead of $9.99 because then I would actually support MORE music companies by buying their music Legally

just my 2 cents

CD sales don't make artists money, but touring does. Lower cd prices and put more attention into live shows..making shows more accessable and cheaper so kids can actually afford going to shows. Attendance will go up and cd's will sell. Music companies don't look for talent anyway...otherwise more than half the bands i see in NYC on a regular basis would be signed.

Independant unsigned artist

Usually unsigned independant artists sell in between 5 and 10$ a cd.......might be a bit more considering postage costs......its stays a pop and mom business at best a snocap or cdbaby etc business

now take an artist trying a big break:

consider: several hours ,days, months to write a song&compose the music......several days, weeks, nights etc to produce it (pay the musicians, pay the studio, pay the tech).......press the CD's and Print the artwork (pay the studio, photographer etc).......launch the cd (press calls, video, advertisements, radio air etc.....pay for most of it) Now take all that bundle it up and of course pay the musician...........SELL THE CD 15 to 20$ and .99 comes back to the musician, BUT hardly any goes to the label etc..............the big break comes from drived products!!!

Well, I think 20$ (14-15€ for a LP here in Germany) is plain good 'ol robbery... especially for an industry that is just over and over copying itself with mainstream crap. So I can somewhat fully sympathize with treant. At least his music is independet and creative.

I don't bother stealing music, but i don't bother buying albums i haven't heard anymore because the plain old truth is that record labels release garbage. There may be 2 or 3 good songs on the whole album and the rest is filler. Maybe if they actually released albums worth the ridiculous amount of money they are charging people will buy them. I've recorded music and i've written music and if they are real musicians/artists they do it because they love it. The creative process shouldn't be considered a chore like you're making it out to be.

I've purchased 4 CD's in my lifetime: Two from Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon and Wish you were here) Nickelback Silver Side Up and Crossfade Selftitled.

Ever since anything I want is 3 clicks away. Almost every song on my computer is ripped from cds as most of my parents friends have large cd collections and I just borrow and rip the tracks.

The original performer usually gets between $.15 and $.18 per cd from what I read last (could be old information). Most of this money goes to the label in terms of funding other lesser known bands, advertising budgets, and rootkits if your label is sony.

Most cd's I'm interested in that are available at best buy etc are only $10 because no one buys them, even then I can purchase the cd online from the original artist for $5..

if the music industry people know that people are illiegally downloading & 'stealing' their music then wouldnt it make sense to make CD's cheaper as over 90% of the worlds population has broadband & knows that there are illiegal & legit ways to get music cheaper. but some of the legit sites are also guilty of price fixing I know that apple was one of them.

but downloading a full album for 2 or 3 UK Pounds Sterling would be a force to be recond with. the income might be a bit slow flowing in but at least you get ALL of it instead of having more then 20% go missing through illiegal means.

seriously I remember when CD's use to be like 15UK poundsterling a peice & now they are roughly 8.99 each but thats still quite expensive for something that they paid 20p to make

I understand that bands have mouths to feed & even tho I myself are guilty of gaining music by illegal means I have more or less tried to see each band that I have 'stolen' from at least once or twice.

So Im well behind trent on this one - If by stealing & sharing their music with your friends will get then a bigger fan base then why not? even tho they may lose money on the CD side of things they will have more booked out shows which mean more cash for booze.

that is the way things are. i wont just straight out say that nobody buys cds anymore because a lot of people still do but society/culture has changed.

I wish the record companies would start to get with the times. They should charge less for music, but just because it costs too much for someone to buy, doesn't mean its ok to illegally download. Also, if the record companies actually compensated the recording artists more on record sales, customers would feel that their purchase actually helped their favourite bands, instead of some greedy corporation. That way, Joe Schmo who is just getting his big break won't be robbed twice, once by fans who pirate, and once more by the greedy corporation.

First, Trent can go fuck himself.

Second, the logic of 'it only costs 20p to make, so therefor...' is terrible. Think of all the things you could apply that to... the list would be endless.

Third, it is true that music is trash these days, and it's unfortunate that we pay whatever amount of money for what one could hardly call 'music.' However, your taste or opinion does not dictate the market or the value of the art. The prices are dictated through and by numerous variables and conditions. It's nothing new, it's been going on for years.

It's laughable the excuses people come up with to justify inappropriate actions.

The artist put in six months writing and recording, you pay fifteen bucks, omg bank breaker!!! Get a fucking job, work for two or three hours, buy the album and stop being such a cheap whine ass.

Reznor himself was fuming at the prices of CDs in Australia which he said were far too high.

He said that since the record labels had done nothing to drop the price fans should "STEAL IT. Steal away.

I guess he was fuming over the prices in Australia and told Australians
to steal it!!! he tried to get a price drop for them but Uneversal wasent having it for people down under.. I wonder how much more it is down there... must be a fair bit more :rockout:

go Trent!

Artists get payed for an album contract.... not CDs themselfs

Mostly correct, artists get an "advance" from the record company that they have to pay back over time through anything entertainment related (albums, merchandise, concerts, movies, etc.)

SELL THE CD 15 to 20$ and .99 comes back to the musician, BUT hardly any goes to the label etc..............the big break comes from drived products!!!

SO NO DON'T STEAL MUSIC OR SOFTWARE OR ANYTHING PEOPLE TAKE TIME CREATING: ITS PLAIN GOOD 'OL ROBBERY

Unfortunately, American artists are only paid $0.007 per album sold (which is going back to the record company anyway after they've already gotten the first $11.93, thanks to the advance). Most people in the industry consider the big labels as the ones committing the robbery but it's the price people are willing to pay for fame. The only folks that really make money are those that produce themselves like Madonna and Prince (or The Artist Formerly Known As).

If you want your favorite artist to make money send them $1 in the mail... then go download their album.

where the hell do you get the number .007 cents per album sold? thats ridiculous. if that were true then there wouldnt be many multi-millionare music artists out there at all. an album would have to go triple platinum for the artist to even make a million bucks. now I know thats not true, just watch mtv sometime
