I managed to bend a few pins and reinstalled the processor, unknowingly, and then lost the B1 memory slot. No boot with the slot filled. But otherwise working using only the A1 slot. When I removed the proc. and found my error I attempted to straighten those three pins but they broke off. Bought a replacement and the motherboard worked fine with both memory slots filled. I guess there's no way to repair that damage? That cost me $300 and much frustration.

That's a bummer!

I've had some slightly bent pins happen to an AMD CPU but nothing major and with careful adjustment I was able to straighten them up. I've also had second hand LGA motherboards from Ebay not properly packed and arrive with LGA pin damage. Depending on the severity sometimes repairable... Sometimes not. I've got one Intel board now on the shelf that only runs one channel/one set of slots. The Ebay seller did the right thing and refunded me my payment.

It's not impossible but is tricky, I replaced a pin yesterday , still have to test it so can't say of successfully done but it's possible.

I've heard that at least here in Finland a goldsmith has repaired broken AMD pins from some people.

I remember fixing a Socket A pin myself but my hand isn't stable enough (and I don't have an enough fine tip for my soldering iron) to fix a newer AMD CPU..

Lucky for me I have access to a rework station, but I have got adequate tips for my house iron, my eyes on close up, small work, limits me , but I did have to double brace my hand for that and I'm not that shakey.

My proc. got installed and mounted with the bent pins making it really bad. It was working ok on one memory module. Resorting to using a fine sewing needle to bend the pins back up to straighten them they broke off. I would think the factory could repair them for a fee but that might not be the case at all. I suppose it could still be used without the B1 memory slot. Just put a big stick in A1(32GB).

The only "fix" without trying to solder is by making your own little pins that protrude just a touch from the socket. You'd place them into the holes where the pins are missing from the cpu. Set the Cpu in and clamp it down. Hope your makeshift pins touch the pads during clamp down. If so, you might have a working chip again!

Good Luck!

Edit: Can you take a clear picture of the pin side of the cpu please? I'd like to see it.

My fix of a brand new 2700X was more elegant. I went to nearste shop (part of a chain, I had bought it online) told them that I bent some pins when I changed the cooler and asked if they could fix it since I sensed that my unsteady hand and poor eyesight wouldn’t cut it. They gave me a new CPU free of change. Needless to say that I stayed with them afterwards. OK, I did use them a lot and they could see my order history. These pins are fragile but I came from Intel and little did I know. I can’t offer any better advice then already given by others here.

I would but, while I attempted to straighten more pins I broke off two more. With the intention to see if it would run again, I finally got the proc to reseat with minimal pressure and lock it back in. It tended to "rock" in the socket. So I put everything back and it booted just using the A1 memory slot. I am responding with that computer. So it's still working. Testing okay.

Electronics repair or jewler

Bent pens has been around since before Socket 7, pulling a cpu out has been arounds since the 478 P4 IHS (never had that problem with the 423 parts)

I thought about contacting AMD to see about a repair or asking my local guy. I saw a couple of youtube videos and people managed to get them going again after some "Southern engineering".

Soldering new pins on is tricky but very possible. I've done half a dozen AM4 chips and the most difficult things are getting the base of the pin that's still stuck to the solder pad off, and aligning the pin correctly while getting the iron in to flow the pad. Anybody with a steady hand, some new pins, tweezers, and a fine iron tip can get it done.

Local jewelry shops told me no years ago when I ran into this. I used wire placed in the socket and got my 939 Opty back. Also, if memory serves me, did @Mussels not do a writeup not that long ago for this?

You are forgetting about 8088/NEC 30, I built around them but I really didn’t find that relevant for the story.

If u broke cpu pins then its an easy fix. Grab a solder iron with fine tip, some flux, some fine (0.5-1.0mm) soldering wire, and also a donor cpu (only AM4 will work, as the older amd cpus have thicker pins) and make the transplant happen. Its actually pretty easy, u just need to practice a bit (on the donor cpu). Ideally u would want to get something like a A6 9500 or Athlon 220G (or a used dead cpu damaged by overclocking).

You are forgetting about 8088/NEC 30, I built around them but I really didn’t find that relevant for the story.
Hence i said before super 7. Also p4 had ihs. You mean NEC V20

Local jewelry shops told me no years ago when I ran into this.
I had a long-time jeweler friend (sadly, COVID took him :(). And he repaired broken pins for himself and friends - but he refused to do that for customers. He said many of his jeweler friends were the same way.

There were two reasons they didn't do it. (1) Jewelry repair shops just are not set up for ESD control - that's even if the jeweler was aware of the destructive nature of ESD, especially on processors that are not mounted in their grounded sockets. Many are not.

And (2), repairing broken pins is tricky even for skilled jewelers with the right equipment. It is important to note that CPU pins are not made of gold - but are just gold plated wires. So the temperatures required to get a proper bond are considerably higher than needed to repair jewelry. Putting that much concentrated heat that close to the die itself can, and often does, cause even more destruction. And that results in unhappy customers - not good for business. Which is sad because typically, the only reason the pins were bent or broken in the first place was because that customer was not careful.

I have been successful a couple times but only with broken pins on the outer edges where I can come in from the side. These days, my tired old eyes are too old and tired. And my hands are not as steady. Thank goodness most modern CPUs use pads instead of pins.

That's way cool and I have a fairly fine-tipped soldering iron. Matching the wire size shouldn't be a problem. The processor isn't total trash. So far all that seems to be affected is the B1 Memory channel. Otherwise it's still working. A 16GB module will suffice?

I just used a thickish wire out of the core of a cable, if it works it's less imperative to fix IMHO.

Join the club all though, it seemed to be more than a few pins. That is a good Tash you have their man.o_O

Running one stick is fine if you're just using it as an HTPC or office PC. Just expect to severely cripple the 5700G's iGPU performance with only one memory channel, but it should be fine since it's not your main PC. Capacity is still fine, 16GB stick is still 16GB.
