The RTX 3080 12 GB is still a rumored card, despite the increasing amounts of evidence towards its eventual release. The card's refreshed VRAM amount in particular seems to be an important part of NVIDIA's competitiveness plan, not only against AMD's RX 6000-series, which sport a psychological (and sometimes practical) advantage with their 16 GB VRAM capacities; but against Intel and its upcoming ARC Alchemist launch, which are expected to also offer 16 GB of VRAM at competitive shading performance levels.

But it seems that NVIDIA's refresh of the RTX 3080 graphics card won't be limited to a VRAM and bus width increase - CUDA core counts are now reported to have also increased by 2.9%, up to 8,960 from the RTX 3080 10 GB's 8,704 CUDA cores. The card is naturally still expected to make use of the GA-102 chip. An expected increased memory bus width of 384-bits will also bring about an increase in memory bandwidth, at 912 GB/s, the same as the RTX 3080 Ti (it stands at 760 GB/s for the RTX 3080).

All of these changes do however conspire to bring about an increase in the card's TDP as well - up to 350 W, the same as the RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3090. The RTX 3080 12 GB is now expected to be available through mid-late January 2022 - it seems that board partners have already received some number of the chips that are meant to go into the RTX 3080 12 GB cards of this world.

I have just got a rtx 3080. Talk about buyers remorse.... Just kidding. No i considering my self lucky to even get a card in these gpu apocalypse times.

Thr new rumored car will be faster with a few extra Cuda cores, but mainly by higher memory bandwidth. But who knows how difficult this new card will be to get any way. Will new orders first be resived after a year or more, just like rtx 3080 at pre-order. Some have not gotten there 3080 10 gb pre-ordered card yet.

So yeah I m just glad I have a card.

I got my 3080 FE for msrp and am quite satisfied with it (especially after replacing thermal paste and pads), but of course I would've not minded the beefier version of it with 12gb if I had a chance..

Actually it was pretty mild on my economy cause of different reasons.

1. I got my rtx 3080 for almost msrp. A friend of mine works in a electric shop and he got the card for me to the price the store pay for the card them self, so I have paid what the store pays them self for the card. So I paid 681 usd + 25 % taxes. But with the same card else normally goet for up to twice the msrp or 1200 usd + tax. That is a really good deal I think.

2. I then sold a gtx 1660 super for 394 usd with taxes (I paid 424 usd for it with taxes) and few other things that's left overs from my new pc for 106 usd.

So out of my own pocket I only used like 190 usd + tax on the rtx 3080 card. A very reasonable amount to use on a card in these times we have now. So no it far from cost me everything.

I got my 3080 FE for msrp and am quite satisfied with it (especially after replacing thermal paste and pads), but of course I would've not minded the beefier version of it with 12gb if I had a chance..
I am as well. I got one of the best rtx 3080 card with aftermarket cooler to MSRP price thanks to a friend. No complaints here either. All throw at 4k with all maxed out the 10 gb vram get scary close to running out.

My original plan was to wait for 12 GB 3080 but with the risk of waiting a long time and the price my friend offered me to a the 3080. I cut not say no to that deal.

I totally agree with you on this. 10 gb is bit to little for 4K. Far cry 6 in 4K with everything cracked to max uses up to 9.8 gb vram, so there are litterly nothing to spare.

Does this mean some cards will be discontinued?

I'm guessing it'll look something like this:
  • New 3070Ti will be slightly faster and closer to a 3080, this means the 3070Ti 8GB will be discontinued.
  • The original 3080 10GB will be discontinued because the 3070Ti 16GB is encroaching on its performance.
  • The new 3080 12GB will be as fast as the 3080Ti.
  • The 3080Ti will be discontinued because it just doesn't have a place anymore with the new 3080 12GB.
  • The 3090 will remain and still keep that 5% performance gap over the new 3080 12GB that it had over the 3080Ti.
  • The 3090Ti will be 5% to maybe 10% faster over the 3090.

I totally agree with you on this. 10 gb is bit to little for 4K. Far cry 6 in 4K with everything cracked to max uses up to 9.8 gb vram, so there are litterly nothing to spare.

Remember, just because that much VRAM is allocated to hold textures, doesn't mean it actually uses that much VRAM to run the game. Folks need to stop saying it's not enough. More certainly looks better, but just because you have 12GB of space doesn't mean games are going to be running so much faster and that 10GB is making things run slowly.

Looks like nvidia and AMD have no interest in lower-mid to mid range cards as miners wouldn’t buy them and they wouldn’t have the margins they do now.

usually when top tier card comes out lowest end card is about 6 months later. Here we are over a year later and AMD didn’t even release 6500xt yet.

also hard to sell a 480/580/1060 replacement card with same performance but more money.

guess I will clean and repaste my rx480 and hopefully it lasts another 5 years.

I find this also pretty weird. Back in the day mid-end cards were probably the most profitable for both.

In this case, the game truly does use it. If you see the official system requirements, they say 11 gb vram+ for 4K with HD textures. So I have no doubts that the game does use it all.

Usage and allocation are not the same.

The space is available to hold textures, but that doesn't mean that all the textures being held are being used nor does it mean increased performance. Games and drivers are pretty good at utilizing the available VRAM that's available on the GPU and still deliver good performance.

If you can track down a GTX 570 1.25GB and a 2.5GB comparison, there isn't really any performance gains with the added 1.25GB the 2.5GB model had. One review of the GTX 570 2.5GB I found (https://www.fudzilla.com/reviews/24458-point-of-view-/-tgt-gtx-570-beast-2-reviewed?start=-1) is hard to tell that the extra VRAM doesn't help the card's performance on games simply because of the heavy OC the card comes with. A heavy OC on a GTX 570 puts it on the same level of a GTX 580, according to TPU
The overclocks of our card are 822 MHz core (11% overclock) and 1185 MHz Memory (25% overclock). Both overclocks are very nice and will help willing users to reach GTX 580 performance levels.
The overclock in this review puts the 2.5GB version of the 570 right at the heels of the GTX 580, which is exactly where the 1.25GB version of the 570 ends up with a heavy OC.

The added VRAM for the GTX 570 doesn't look like it gives it any noticeable performance gains over the 1.25GB version. One had more VRAM, shouldn't it have had better performance over the one with less VRAM?

I think that in GTX 570's case the GPU doesn't have enough horsepower to (at least fully) benefit from the doubled VRAM.

Hard to say without having one of each model to test with. The review didn't list VRAM usage from games, the only indication that the 2.5GB model used more than 1.25GB was the screenshot of GPUZ (on page 5 of 6 in the review) showing the MAX VRAM used was just shy of 2GB. But, we don't know what was being utilized for the screenshot to show 2GB of VRAM was the MAX amount reported for being used.

My point is, even though a GPU might have less VRAM, doesn't mean a game will easily suffer. Games and the drivers are pretty good at utilizing the available space they have to make the game run well.

If they were to put out a RTX 3080 with exact same specs, but gave it an extra 2GB of RAM (12GB instead of 10GB) - it wouldn't make a lick of difference in any game, even if you re-benched them 3-4 years down the road.

Other sites are rumouring this isn't ever releasing to consumer's.
And only the 3090 To is still releasing.

Either way, with 12GB 2060 last week who knows what will be released.

Jeesus. So what is the difference between this and 3080 Super?? or 3080 Ti??
They're not using those names yet, so they can re-use them later

A 3080 super would be a 3090 with 12GB VRAM, with the full 10496 shaders
a 3080ti would be 10GB VRAM, but higher speeds somewhere

Nvidia want a lot of different products to sell, with minor differences. It's how they work, always something new to show off to stay relevant in the media and for investors - even when its just a minor tweak to what they have already, based on what parts are available at the time (GDDR6 prices tank? suddenly, VRAM doubles on midrange cards)

I would still buy a 3080 (non Ti) over any other card ion the line-up if I could buy any of them at RRP. Moving it to 12GB will help with some AAA titles in 4K I guess, but with the explosive growth in DLSS, FSR and soon XeSS, I don't see even 10GB being much concern down the track for 4K.

The trouble is no doubt the 12GB 3080 will see a huge price jump over the 10GB version, so I'd probably lean toward that one even over a 3070 Ti with 16GB.
