Semiconductor Makers Don't Expect Russia-Ukraine War to Worsen Chip Shortages

I do understand what you are saying but there is one thing that you are forgetting. Everything that is going to happen will be a result of Putin's mind state. It is obvious that he believes his own rhetoric. Regardless of how we look at it the people that live in the former satellites decided that they wanted democracy and to ensure that have joined NATO. The West does not want anything from Ukraine (other than Barbie wives online) but Ukraine does produce a lot of Neon. I hope that you are right and he stays where is but I don't see them starting a campaign at the end of winter to go back home. I do believe that he wants to recreate the Soviet Empire (he said that) and calling the president of Ukraine a Neo Nazi (when his last name cannot be not Jewish) and says there are artillery pieces in the city of Kiev aimed at Russia??????? We can only hope that common sense wins out but with the Human Equation there is no guarantee. The main reason we should barbecue his ass is why Ukraine is special to the West......Chernobyl. Apparently the fighting damaged some of the protection protocol and the radiation intensity has increased. The Government of the Ukraine have said that it is not worrying. Before I go on though I must ask you what you know about Chernobyl. We were scared after Fukushima fell into the Ocean.
If the West didn't want anything from Ukraine they wouldn't have financed the Maidan Revolution. The West rolled the dice and lost.

This may have little effect on the supplies of semiconductors and many other goods, but I'm sure it will be used as an excuse for anything going wrong, just like Covid is used as an excuse for most delays and shortages, even those which have little or nothing to do with it.

It's weird how market wasn't impacted by several invasions by some other country in recent years, but when it comes to this one it's like the world is ending.
Things can quickly escalate, even into something neither party expected. The Russian dictator is not planning to stop with Ukraine.

The Ukraine is a very special case but is it the fault of hte West that it has failed? What can you blame NATO for?
According to the Budapest Memorandum, the US and UK was supposed to guarantee Ukraine's territorial integrity, in exchange for them giving up their nukes.

We can blame NATO with their continued expansion towards Russia. What does Ukraine have that the west wants? Titanium? Iron? I don't recall the US being hard up on those resources. The only thing I can think of is land positioning in relation to Russia…
Make no mistake, this war is all about resources. Ukraine is a major supplier of grain for Europe, and controlling this gives Russia even more power over Europe than they already got from supplying gas, oil and fertilizer. With the current shortages of fertilizer, the timing here is not accidental.
Neither NATO nor Ukraine is a military threat to Russia, and tactically it makes little sense for Russia to control it, as it's easy to rush through and hard to defend.

And because National this is a word that makes many people sneeze, you better stick to topics of computer hardware.

The world was a different place but when the Wall fell the West had already gone to China. If it was not for the reconstruction of Germany Europe would already be on it's knees financially and economically. Having said that Chernobyl is in the Ukraine and outside of mining there is no economy as a result. This is not going to stop anytime soon either. The Weapons I see on display are not meant for Regional skirmishes. All of this can be squarely placed at the feet of Putin and Chi though. We are at a point of no return. How much more relevance will this article have if (when ) China invades Taiwan to gain access to it's fabs and foundrys. On some stupid far right circles they are saying Taiwan is a province of China.

China and Russia have never been enemies. They are very much like Canada and the USA. Regardless of what they say. Those troops that came out of Belarus had to travel through China to get there.
far right? if the Sun is still shining in space, the right is capitalist and against Communist China
the right is the one always fighting for Taiwan - which is a super capitalist country and big ally of the US and Japan

If this was 25 years ago everything you said would be true. One of the things that the West (Including the Far Right) forgot was though they thought that they could make China it's mistress with money, they forgot that China is already married to Russia. So when the leader of the Far right party in America espouses the "virtues" of Putin during a potentially life changing moment for everyone on Earth questions have to be asked. Especially when China refuses to condemn the actions. I know I saw Russian Supersonic and Heavy Bombers, attack helicopters, tanks and fighter jets on Youtube. This situation is not a joke and cannot be summarily judged along the lines of capitalism. The thing that connects Taiwan, US and Japan (Korea, Singapore, India) is that they are all democracies. The thing that Putin (as evidenced by Belarus) wants is a recession of the democratic expansion of Europe. He has not been successful in gas lighting the Ukraine (after triggering and funding a rebellion) so he decided he will install a marionette in there. In terms of this specific post the reason we don't expect anything to happen to chip shortage is about 300 billion dollars worth of ships, planes and subs patrolling the South China Sea (The British sent their Newest Warship there months ago). I have said this before on other posts, chips are worth more than oil or gold and that means something and everything at the same time.

Bunch of keyboard warriors up in here, how about we get back on topic?

Bet Samsung has the first Issue.

The real topic is : Mom when I will be able to get RTX3000 for 400$ ? NEVER ...

^^ This. :) While zapping through the news channels there was also a report on "France24" where they mentioned that Ukraine is also the key supplier for 2 rare gases that are crucial for chip production. They are also the main exporter of grain for the EU, along with Russia. Even if they can get these gases from somewhere else, it will be more costly.

And even if they can keep up the production, their sales will go downhill. With all the sanctions & banning of russian gas, oil & coal, energy/food prices & inflation in Europe will go through the roof. So you will have loads of people who just do not have the cash to waste on electronics. This will not only hit the EU market, it will hit the global market, esp. China. The whole economy will go downhill.

But after the current events & listening to Putin's crazy invasion speach, basically threatening everyone who intervenes with a nuke, the last what I would be worried is chip shortages. If this lunatic will not get "Stauffenberg'd" he's going to take down the world with him. He was recently even threatening Finnland & Sweden with military action if they deem to join NATO. Guess what they will do now after watching what happens to countries who are not protected by NATO? An absolute no brainer. :D

Why would it?
Neon exports, as the post said. But it appears to be a nonissue because stockpiles are sufficient.

Pushing Ukraine towards NATO is what started this.
You mean when they were begging to be admitted and we dragged our feet to avoid a war?

Yeah, real pushy.

Make no mistake, this is about National security.

Well aren't you just full of helpful unwanted advice...

Bush, Obama and McCain pushed for Ukraine to become a member of NATO. Germany and the Netherlands vetoed it the first time around and after Yanukovych was elected it became a non issue until the US sponsored coup in 2014.

I was talking about the immediate events you seemed so concerned with. You know, the ones that happened this year.

I don't get why you have to project everything into the American political system. This goes for all of you. It's quite sickening when a war is going on and people are dying that all you can think about is Biden this or Trump that. Stop.

You need to ask yourself what provoked this war. It's not like Putin woke up one morning and just decided to invade Ukraine. Cause & consequence actually mean something.

Chernobyl basically ended up going "boom" when they were trying to run an experiment due to mistakes(or negligence) in safety protocols.
Putin is not interested in recreating the Soviet Empire. It didn't work back then, and it won't work now. Sure, he wants the former satellite nations back into Russia's sphere of influence, but not as a "revived" Soviet Union. The whole reason they ditched the Soviet system is because they could not keep up with the west economically with it. Their economy, to a larger extent, was going down the toilet due to how isolated they were and had they continued in that direction, they would've been in an even worse position than they are now militarily.

Simple greed and power dreams of strong men living in the past is what provoked this war. Good luck reasoning with that. We tried that. This is the result, every step of the way from Georgia to today.

Its really quite similar to the onset of the second World War. Country backed into corner, loser of last ideological conflict gets a strong leader and here we go.

Cause and consequence. Thinking we could have prevented this might be overly optimistic.

This is what happens when deterrence fails.

There's 2 less enormous countries buying them, so it kind of helps.

Being a former Russian territory? Do you even know what the word "Ukraine" means? Or how in Russia, Kyiv is reffered to as "the mother of all Russian cities." There is a huge historical claim on Ukraine.

One thing I'm sure of is American politics have jack shit to do with it.

But what do I know, I've only been there, and studied it's relations to the west literally in college as part of my degree.

People should have learn the lessons from the past, that's how Hitler got into power, but they never do. After WWII the way the world faced Japan and Germany was completely different and the results were also different.
And i fear all the rethoric from mainly the US against China (but that spread through the world) will cause the same problem down the road. For as bad as they are, isolating them only makes things worst, always.

Yes because working with China and Russia really stopped any acts of aggression from them for the last 20 years, they opened right up to capitalism, used the parts that suited them and didn't then invade their neighbours, oh wait, Georgia, Crimea, Nepal, Bhutan , Ukraine all think it's not panned out to well, talking that is, shit most were still trying to talk it out upto becoming a new region of their aggressor.

You can't talk down some people, that's clear.

It's always about money and power, some are always after more.

Your talking about a madman. When you say them to refer to Russia, Belarus, etc remember that's not what most people want.

Besides they are not the only ones causing problems everywhere and we have a lot more excuses to give to them. Just look at the amount of damage the US did over the years, almost all of South America and Iran are the way they are because of the US, and there there is no madman making the decisions.

I've spent time in all three RUB countries (Russia, Belarus, Ukraine) and I don't recall meeting anyone interested in bringing back the empire of the Kievan Rus. What I do know is that Putin has warned the West multiple times that he has a big problem with Ukraine joining NATO and if you don't think US foreign policy has anything to do with what happened with Ukraine in 2002, 2014, and what's happening there atm then you are clueless on as to why Russia has invaded Ukraine twice now within the past 7 years.

Hi,
They invade because nobody will stop them sanctions are long term not short
Main reason to invade is resources other is ego and opportunity is ripe.

Foreign policy is not really tied to internal politics though. Even Trump figured that out in his very own way. With Kim, with Putin, even Zelenski. The distance to the political bickering in the US and geopolitical realities couldnt be greater.

Literally every meeting the man and his loyal helpers had with them was a short exercise in humiliation for him. Even if he tried to spin it another way - the weakness he showed was the US in total disarray and a strategy based on wishful thinking and huge naivity. Nearly as bad as the inaction of the EU....

Well, I'm pretty sure Putin is. I really don't see a need to make it more complicated than that.

This is about certain US leaders attempting to get Ukraine into NATO just as it was in 2014 RE Russian invasion of the Krim and Donbass.
