recuerdo que nadie le tenia fe a la RX580 4G y las preventas salieron en 200.00 aquellos dias de antaño cuando AMD era Modesta y Asequible...

Edit (via translate) by mod:

I remember that no one had faith in the RX580 4G and presales came out at 200.00 in those days of yore when AMD was Modest and Affordable...

Remember they are a Corporation, Lisa SU was brought in to lead it back to Profitability. AMD is not going to take it on the chin to drastically drop the prices knowing they are not as well known as ngreedia or untel. Intels pricing of ARC will be right with AMD and nvidia.

Lets not forget the SEC fine against nvidia now
They are just shooting themselves in a foot. AMD can compete with Nvidia only with good value for the money products. They stop doing that more than one year ago.

Thank god!

Praise be!

Prices have gone up on just about everything else. Why would we expect GPU MSRP to be any different?

Because this is two year old technology i.e. old GPUs being reheated under the shadow of their successors. The MSRP will be unrealistic in current market conditions, so AMD could very well keep the same price point of the original hardware. But they remain excellent pieces of kit, anyway. 6950 XT is the lamest situation because the specifications are still below 6900 XT LC (the one with XTXH core and AIO cooling), but somehow FUD is being spread that it's better than the 3090 Ti already... take it easy fellow AMD fans, it is not the time yet, but the dream of beating NVIDIA is coming :D

Just like smartphones... oh, wait...

Well, phones have long since gone off their rocker with an insane amount of embedded technology in them. The iPhone's A15 chip is an SoC with 15 billion transistors on TSMC 5 nm! Not saying GPU complexity also hasn't significantly increased, it has, but... there is nothing meaningfully new on these products being launched by AMD soon.

Seriously? "in my day we could buy dGPUs for $600 at the high end". Did you walk to school in the snow uphill both ways without shoes too? Prices have gone up for everything! Also the 30 series just dropped in price. It will get better but will never be the same as the prices of old. Two generations of $1400 top end TO START. Once it happens twice you know its not going back to normal. Just like when apple came out with the Iphone X. We all thought "1k is crazy!" but now its normal to pay a grand for a damn phone. Same will be said for the top end dGPUs.

There is not even a contest. The Radeons are always a better buy.
Double the price for mere 17.7% higher performance on average.

I disagree here. There are very good and fast phones for as low as 0.4k, and you can always save even more and buy a good enough phone for 0.2k.

Absolutely agree. You can get a good enough phone for $250ish. I was specifically talking about "the best of the best' market. Like the Iphone Pro Max.

Nvidia has actually become more affordable than AMD never thought I would ever say that. Will definitely checkout Nvidia mid range GPU for upgrade come September or October. At least they don't gimp the Pci-e lanes.
Erm the 6600 and up will see price reductions due to 6650 and up becoming available on shelves

See what these come in at $ wise in the Aussie market down here. My 5700 XT factory OC does ok atm, but I could do with lower power consumption & more fps no doubt at 1440p. 6650 could be the go... wait n' see some reviews first though.

You're talking halo parts, mate. The price/performance argument rarely applies in this bracket, anyway. On paper and in practice, the GA102 cards are more feature rich and tend to produce better results in modern games. That's where there's no contest.

If one was truly concerned about price/perf ratio, they'd buy an RX 6800. That's by far the best GPU for the money, provided one can acquire one at MSRP. I also have to add, as an early adopter of Ampere, I've owned my RTX 3090 for 20 months now. Seeing a GPU refresh that can't quite beat it yet, and launching with hiked prices is pretty disappointing and shows the state of the industry right now. The games that the 6900 XT can beat the RTX 3090 at are the same games where an RX 6800 will already do so, because they're biased towards the Radeon's superior raster performance to begin with (i.e. RDR2). Raise the resolution, scene complexity or employ more advanced rendering techniques that demand either brute computing power or memory bandwidth, Navi 21 suddenly doesn't have such a good time anymore. 6950 XT will not change that, just as the 3090 Ti didn't change the original 3090's standing and still shares many of its problems.

That works when there is a lot of competition on supply side of the market. But current dGPU market is made of a market leader (Ngreedia) and a market follower (AMD). A type of scenario, where a market follower seeks to optimize profit margins but is less interested in differentiating its brand and value proposition from the market leader to gain market share. Instead, the market follower effectively rides on the market leader's coattails while positioning its brand just far enough away from the market leader to be seemingly different while being OK with status quo on the market. They both profit from this position: a market leader not having a worry of being accused of being a monopolist and a market follower ripping short term benefits of market leader's rising profit margins due to dictating price increases on the market.
1. Please stop using terms like "Ngreedia", it makes you sound like you're twelve.
2. Your claim that NVIDIA is the market leader while AMD is a follower, has very little merit. Yes, NVIDIA has the absolute better-performing GPUs and better technology with ray-tracing, but neither of these have proven to be a massive differentiator so far.
3. Despite what you believe, neither NVIDIA nor AMD don't want to charge through the nose for GPUs because they're well aware that doing so means fewer people can afford their products and thus fewer sales will be made. They'd much rather supply more product and price it lower, which will ultimately result in more revenue and profit - except the ongoing fab capacity shortage means they literally cannot tweak supply, and therefore price, into the range they prefer. Yet, their shareholders continue to expect increased revenue and profits every year - and in a supply-constrained scenario, the only way you're able to reach those targets is by increasing price. Which is exactly what we're seeing. So if you want to blame someone for being greedy, blame the shareholders.

Which is exactly what we're seeing. So if you want to blame someone for being greedy, blame the shareholders.

That is a misconception, sure shareolders will want more profits every quarter, there has to be a reason for they to invest, it's called an investment. But shifting the blame to them seems absurd. It's the company that has to find the solutions, the shareolders don't control the bussiness.

And it's not like Lisa and Jensen are completely desinterested from the share price, and only do it for the shareolders sake, that's complete BS. Their personal revenue and personal wealth are linked to share price.

Eth mining may be dying, but eth is alive and well. They aren't strictly co-dependent.

If eth mining is dying how will they keep pumping money into the ecosystem?

Yeah, investments into eth alone won't do it. By the time it's come close to reaching its end of time, it'll basically be done with. Mining is the ultimate source of it.

it isn't the mining that gives it's value, it's scarcety and supply and demand. Mining is just the way to get to them. They will in fact in theory have higher value as they should become more scarce assuming supply and demand are equivalent.

Scarcity alone doesn't make something valuble, otherwise I can go out and buy a pink glitter pen and scrawl out a limited edition doodle along with my signature until the ink runs out and claim that has value. Look at it from the perspective of someone looking to invest into it and not one trying to cash out.
