Contrariwise, if it's designed with a 1mm gap and one puts in a 1.1mm pad, it will not be a problem. Good thermal pads have a certain amount of "give" designed into them.
I think anything over 1.15 might start giving problems

A couple of days ago I replaced all pads on the 2.5y old MSI 5700XT GamingX as old ones got too oily and mess everything up (card sitting vertically). Was a pain to clean board's PCI-E slot.
And this card has a quite a few inside to all places around. 1.0mm, 2.0mm and 2.5mm to the cooler side and 4.0mm to backplate.
I used 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 and 4.0. At some places I installed 0.5mm thicker.

I used "Thermalright Valor Odin" and these pads are like plasticine. The can expand their contact surface and reduce their thickness if pressed and stay there without any more pressure. Sellers have to box them properly so they dont get pressed during shipping as Thermalright had the idea to put them inside a (thick)paper envelope. :kookoo:

Nothing like the foamy ones that card had from MSI. They were all right as they did their job well, but these new pads are at least +50% heavier on the same thickness. Meaning they're denser.

Didnt install the card back yet as Im waiting for some paste as I only got LM now and I'm not willing to do that on a vertically sitting card. Dont need it either...
They need some care dealing with the pads

Stay on topic.
