Due to Chip Oversupply, NVIDIA Reportedly Resumes Production of RTX 3080 12 GB

3080 12GB for 500usd sound good :D
In August 2021, maybe. In August 2022, with Ada coming up... not so much.

But seriously, I have reached the point where I don't really care about generational improvements like at all. I care about being able to buy a video card at a sane price again.

Right, (odd hangover word, @bug) but in general you were right last comment;)
Wait what??

oversupply. But start/increase production???

But I thought all these companies said there was no supply hence the high prices………..
Miner's stopped buying, totes coincidentally cards appeared from the GPU maker some believe Didn't sell directly to miner's, hmmmmnnnnnn.

They're not going to produce more of anything. They already ordered the chips, to secure fab capacity. But the demand went poof! in the meantime.

This! If I can buy an x80 at the proper price of an x80 and its a substantial upgrade, thats a go for me. Never cared about latest greatest...

Paid 420 ish eur for this 1080, if I can get 3080 at that ballpark price, thats solid value even with ADA knocking on the door. Especially if that is mostly a TDP bump and some small refinements...

Pascal-late in gen- all over again :) As always, timing is everything

More 3080 Ti/ 3090 Ti are converted or reallocated to 3080. the more you buy the more you save. it just works.

if 3080 10/12 is replaced by 4060 Ti/4070 that means 449/549 MSRP. $799 still overpriced.

need to download more ram for my fkn 3070ti which i spend $980 on

If it does hit this price brand new, I probably will get one and skip next gen.

That's what they get for abandoning tried and true gaming metric cycles and gambling on crypto. Gambling is gambling, they can piss off.

This kind of thinking was what I was referring to and how Nvidia will shoot itself in the foot. Bring out the next gen first.

With all that talk of people holding off from buying and oversupply, I still see the 3080 12gb plateauing for the past month at about $750ish on the sale end in the US, which is still higher than previous generations for the x080 model that far from release date. Clearly there’s enough demand at those prices, or we’d continue seeing the price go lower down. 6900 XT is also kind of plateauing at around $700. I will buy one of those at $450-ish, if that’s ever realistic pricing again, perhaps after the 4000 release.

Higher supply, bigger need to sell, more price cuts.
Supply is not going to change at all since there is a fixed number of GA102 to sell. There is technically no difference even if Nvidia chooses to sell a fully working GA102 as a RTX 3080 12GB vs 3080 Ti. And as I mentioned before, the RTX 3080 12GB are not flying off the shelves any faster than the existing 10GB version. So reintroducing it or not makes no difference. If they are going to slash prices, they might as well just cut prices of existing RTX 3080 and 3080 Ti. It’s really the price that matters now.

I don’t think the demand for GPU is that strong, and it’s a common problem when you are very near the launch of the next gen GPUs. Here, we are talking about high end cards, that usually only enthusiasts are interested. The same enthusiasts won’t want to throw money at a high end GPU when something better is not that far off. Prices are holding because it’s logical that companies will attempt to drop price slowly and assess whether further cuts are required so that they don’t lose their profit margin so quickly. And since the RTX 3080 12GB was rumoured to have been discontinued by Nvidia awhile back, and you still find them in stores now, it just proves that demand is still weak. If it was at the start of the year, it would be gone in no time.

Back in the days they would just slap the chips in the next gen 4070 or whatever & call it a day. :D

Which could still be the case, but till then they try to keep milking the sheeple.

You must be thinking AMD/Rebrandeon ;)

I am looking at Wiki page for Ethereum and it doesn't say anything about it being dead.

Trickling the supply, pretending to have a shortage -> Oh crap, we a are left with a bunch of leftover chips and the next gen is coming WHAT DO WE DO

Do you understand that production is set with at least 6 months in advance and that there was a recent crash in demand because of crypto mining slowing down?
