NVIDIA detailed the design of its GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition graphics card in a briefing with us today.

While the new Founders Edition looks very similar to the RTX 3090 Ti Founders Edition, NVIDIA says it has made several changes to its design. The metal outer frame now comes with a more pronounced gunmetal tinge. The heatsink array underneath has been redesigned to improve airflow between the two fans.

The fan itself has been updated, too. NVIDIA says it tested as many as 50 new fan designs before choosing this one, which offers up to 20% higher airflow than the one you have in the RTX 3090 Ti. Besides the heatsink and fan, the company also redesigned the vapor-chamber plate that pulls heat from the GPU and surrounding memory chips; as well as the base plate drawing heat from the VRM components. The heatpipes follow an improved heat-distribution.

The card uses the same compact PCB design like the GeForce 30 Series and allows airflow through the card. RTX 4090 draws power from a single 12+4 pin PCIe Gen 5 ATX 12VHPWR connector that's capable of pulling up to 600 W of power over a single cable. NVIDIA made it clear the existing power supplies will work fine through the use of adapter cables, a ATX 3.0 PCI-Express 5.0 power supply is not required for Ada Lovelace GPUs.

While the RTX 4090 operates at 450 W by default, the power delivery capability allows you to increase the power limit up to 600 W for overclocking. The card features a 23-phase VRM (20-phase GPU + 3-phase memory). NVIDIA claims that it has re-architected its VRM to offer superior transient voltage management. This is specifically to minimize the kind of spikes or excursions we've seen with previous-gen high-end graphics cards such as the RTX 3090 Ti and Radeon RX 6900 Series. These spikes often causes spontaneous shutdowns on some power supplies, even if they had a much higher wattage rating than required.

In the chart above, NVIDIA shows how current spikes get mitigated by their new VRM design, which uses a PID controller feedback loop. While the RTX 3090 bounces up and down, the RTX 4090 stays relatively stable, and just follows the general trend of the current loading pattern thanks to a 10x improvement in power management response time. It's also worth pointing out that the peak power current spike on the RTX 3090 is higher than the RTX 4090, even though the RTX 3090 is rated 100 W lower than the RTX 4090 (350 W vs 450 W).

This should come as big news for those with older PSUs that are counting on the in-box adapter that's bundled with every Founders Edition and that converts three 8-pin PCIe power connectors into the 12+4 pin ATX 12VHPWR connector; without having to wait for newer-generation ATX 3.0 + PCIe Gen 5 compliant PSUs. This however doesn't necessarily mean that custom-design graphics cards will meet the same transient-response standards.

A special focus was put on memory temperature, which has been decreased by 10°C. In collaboration with Micron, NVIDIA selected memory chips fabricated on a new process, and all chips are 16 Gbit (density), which means they all fit on the same side of the PCB, so they can be cooled more effectively.

The GeForce RTX 4080 16 GB Founders Edition shares the same cooler design as the RTX 4090, despite being a notch lower in positioning.

Just as reminder, GeForce RTX 4090 will be available on-shelf on October 12th, for $1600. NVIDIA's new flagship graphics card uses the 4 nanometer AD102 Ada Lovelace GPU and comes with 384-bit 24 GB GDDR6X memory from Micron. The number of GPU cores is 16384, with 512 TMUs and 192 ROPs.

They're intentionally pricing high to prevent the 3xxx prices to fall down. When the 3xxx is gone they might drop current prices by a lot.

This is comical but the price isn't unexpected.

Gamers, we don't need the 4090 (with the exception of a very, very few). Leave it to the people that need it for work purposes.

I am one of those very few, because I want to game at max settings in the latest AAA games at 165hz 165 fps at all times at 2560x1440p, I find the immersion increases in the 144hz to 180hz range. anything above that is too diminishing returns. I don't mind gaming at 100 fps or anything, its still a great experience, but I do feel the immersion increases to some degree at the 165hz I have experienced some older games run at.

That being said, I will NOT be buying a 4090, and I am waiting for RDNA3 to kick Nvidia's ass. :)

Wait did I read that right? Is it not a smaller cooler like the 3090/3080 pair? That would be pretty interesting for when prices drop later on, I like the design of the 3090/4090 (haven't yet seen how much bigger the 4090 though) but am not really willing to pay the top halo product price, but the second bellow option could be interesting once discounts start to happen way down the line

looks exactly the same. I don't see the "redesign".

At least the fan is slightly bigger and they had to add a contour to the frame, otherwise i'm not sure of too many differences. I thought it was supposed to be bigger overall but doesn't look very much like that's the case, need to wait for someone to post pictures of the two side by side lol

Looks like the fans are slightly bigger - they have taken a couple of bites out of the frames surrounding them. Also looks like the fans are connected with pogo pins now rather than ultra-fragile ribbon cables? If so: about damn time. And there's a ... service hatch? on the front of the card, for some reason?

Good luck with AMD drivers :)

Will do, I had a RX 6800 at launch (I regret selling it), and had 0 issues with it. It ran withcer 3 at 165 fps 165hz 1080p maxed out. Was a fantastic card and ran cool (reference design)

Is that a 4slot cooler??

It wouldn't surprise me (I thought it was a 3.5 slot wide, but I could just be imaging that). The 980Ti Zotac AMP! Omega I had was a 2.5 slot wide card. She only pulled around 300W at peak gaming performance. If these 4090 are really 450-600W, a larger heatsink would most likely be required.

AMD drivers have improved massively over the past few years. The new OpenGL and Direct3D drivers are highly performant and quite compatible, not to mention AMD took most feedback coming from the community at large to heart. RDNA 3 is going to be sublime, just you wait :)

As if the 3090ti wasnt ridiculous enough at launch. Now it seems its only purpose was to make the 40 series seem more reasonable on that table above.

Its not hard to see why people are pissed off rn. Nvidia want ti money for the 4080, and are trying to sell the 4070 under the *80 tier to make the price jump more stomachable. Not sure its working ^_^

AMD, what you got?

Is that correct? Coz the 3090 FE model says the same thing https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-rtx-3090.c3622 . Thats asking the "new fan" to do a lot of lifting...

It has the same tdp as the 3090 Ti, and that came with the same cooler as the 3090 and performed okay (according to TPU's review), so it's likely not a problem. The rumored 600W third party options on the other hand? Yeah, those are going to need more cooling.

My 6900 XT and 6600 have had their drivers working well, so IMO there's not much luck necessary :)
I unfortunately did though. Both 6800xt and 6600. Asus 6600 and gigabyte 6800xt.

AMD drivers are still trash compared to nvidias. But a far cry from the old days so they are improving. What fixed my issue was using Pro drivers as suggested by some members here

The 3090 already used pogo pins in the middle to connect the pcb to the chassis but there was still a fragile ribbon routed through the fins to the fan, i'm guessing this will be the same. Still better than ribbon to pcb but there's room to improve.
