Valve's Proton, which allows Windows games to run on Linux, has been now updated to version 8.0, bringing even more games to Linux OS and Valve's Steam Deck. The latest update is probably one of the biggest yet and much awaited re-base, bringing an extensive list of fixes, as well as a list of new games that are now playable.

Valve's own Pierre-Loup Griffais confirmed on Twitter that this is their biggest re-base to date, and that the experimental-8.0 will follow sometime this week. He also notes that the newest re-base requires a GPU with Vulkan 1.3 support. The list on new AAA games that are now playable includes some big titles like Dead Space (2023), Forspoken, Nioh 2 - The Complete Edition, Disney Dreamlight Valley, and others. It also updates Wine to 8.0, fixes issues with the 2K launcher, rendering issues in multiple games, fixes multi-touch support, adds NVIDIA NVAPI support to multiple games, and plenty of other fixes.

A for Effort i guess.

Still can't run Fallout 4, a game released in 2015 without gamebreaking glitches and crashes.

I am just glad Linux is getting so much love for gaming.

Because M$ will never stop!

I can download it tonight to try if you are interested in seeing if this update fixes it any. I am playing Bioshock Infinite and Dishonored at the moment and it is a flawless experience so far.

Looks like my Kepler is finally too old for Linux gaming. Hopefully AMD brings value to the market with the upcoming Radeon models.

RDNA2 cards are a really good value for Linux gaming. Out of the box support for RDNA3 isn't universal yet. Pop in any of the RX6000 series and game on.

Microsoft hates that they can't spy on you when you use Linux to game. How else are they going to mine that sweet sweet data of yours and build out their AI that will replace your job? Time to support Linux gaming.

I refuse to install Epic Games Store on my Windows PC for this very reason too.

Guess what runs EGS games? Steam Deck!!!! To the moon!!! :toast:

nah I have it sorted out, not gonna nuke my install because of a single game I can play on a VM with gpu access

I had noticed a slow down in the rate of Steam Beta patches occurring in recent weeks. Presumably anyone opting into the Steam Beta/Experimental builds will have had these Proton 8.0 features for a while now.

I think the most important thing here is that we can now run Chex Quest HD.

Well, I mean, its fallout 4. That's just normal behavior.

I mean I signed up for a Steam account because of Valve's efforts with Steam/Proton on Linux .. and the support they've given to the Wine project.

I have not purchased a Deck and probably won't - I use a 43" monitor and aren't particularly interested in going smaller.

Quick search ... yeah, maybe I could have a nosey.

SteamOS doesn't uses the Debian base any longer. That's years old and surprising to see it still on their website and in their FAQ. They changed to an Arch+KDE base.

I've become comfortable with maintaining my home partition across multiple reinstalls of Kubuntu. It'll be interesting to see if SteamOS's KDE will pick up all my Kubuntu desktop settings.

Um, the one I've been playing with is based on Debian. It does still seem to be supported and updates properly, found below.
It also supports NVidia GPU's.

Ah, I see, a bit more reading and I see v1 and v2 are Debian based, while v3 is Arch based - which is only just a year old now.
V1 is not supported anymore but V2 still is, though support might end next year. Hopefully they will have an ISO for V3 on general PCs out before they do. While I'm not anywhere near an avid user, I imagine there are some who are.

That's a deal breaker for a lot of people.
Yeah, this is in their readme:

Q: I have an NVIDIA Geforce Card, can I use it?

A: No. Not even questionable. If you have an NVIDIA GPU, You're on your own. Latest Valve updates for Steam client including normal and Jupiter bootstraps have broken gamepadui on NVIDIA GPUs, and if so, no support will be provided for you.
