Blackbird Interactive and Gearbox Publishing have jointly announced that development on Homeworld 3 is being extended - a message was shared on social media and HW3-related store pages yesterday: "We are moving the launch of Homeworld 3 from the first half of 2023 to February 2024 so that we deliver the quality experience that fans deserve." The long anticipated follow-up to Homeworld 2 (2003) has been delayed numerous times since its 2019 unveiling and start of a crowd funding campaign, but yesterday's news arrived quite close to an expected summer-time launch - some of the fanbase will not be happy about another postponement, but it is encouraging that Blackbird Interactive (a studio founded by ex-Relic veterans) is not rushing an unfinished product to market.

The joint statement elaborates further: "Our primary goal is to deliver a Homeworld experience that lives up to the standards set by its predecessors and is worthy of this series' incredible legacy. Homeworld 3 is shaping up to be exactly that, but in order to fully realize that vision we need more time to refine and polish the game. We deeply appreciate your passion and dedication to this game, and we are working hard to get Homeworld 3 to you as soon as we can." The team encourages fans to take a look at a quick Q&A rundown which semi-explains their decision to delay HW3: "We want to deliver this game as soon as possible, but we can't and shouldn't do that at the cost of quality or the pillars the franchise is built on." A more in-depth preview event is lined up for the interim time before the February 2024 launch: "We are looking forward to sharing our biggest Homeworld 3 progress update yet later this summer. We've been working on a lot behind the scenes, and we can't wait to show everyone."

Tactical, beautiful, and wholly unique, the GOTY-winning sci-fi RTS returns with Homeworld 3. Assume control and battle through fleet combat in dazzling, fully 3D space while the award-winning story unfolds on a galactic scale.

It will be interesting to see how this ends up. I really enjoyed the series as a whole and also what was known as Homeworld Complex Mod that introduce some nice concepts like rank remuneration as well a some of new ships.

With all those botched release, it's a good thing to see game getting pushed.

even more for this kinds of game. RTS need to be really polished and balanced or else they feel very crappy to play.

I loved the original, at least until i quickly figured out how to easily play it through with almost no effort at all, due to a design flaw in the game. Unless you beg me to explain how i'll just leave it at that, no spoilers :fear:

Indeed. HW2 was a bit undercooked. Let's hope they can bring back the glory days of HW1 and Cataclysm.

Enough already I am dying of anticipation.
it's 9 pm here on a friday night.. 2 pm on the east coast.. i think i'll let the tension build some more :)

but also might be good to let it out there.. maybe some of the developers are reading this thread. I'm not aware of anyone else being aware of this.. well it's a bug in the original game. It's still there.

also i'd need to read up about original terminology, it's been like 15 years.. otherwise i'll sound like a complete fool

edit: https://homeworld.fandom.com/wiki/Homeworld#Bugs

yeah, no mention on how to easily beat the game with little effort. I feel so important now.

Fine. Here we go then.

Right from the start all you do is build those little yellow grabber bots with all your resources. Nothing else is needed.
With enough of them it don't matter how many get destroyed, a sufficient number of them will make it through to grab any larger ships coming at you. All those larger ships will become a part of your fleet.

There's no need to build any of those small 'mosquitoes', just keep building the grabber bots, disregarding how many are destroyed approaching anything the game throws at you. Enough of them (i think it was 4 or 6 needed for the big ships) will always get through to steal anything the game throws at you, quickly enlarging your armada to a size that can handle anything the game throws at you.

Rinse and repeat and just walk through the game, you'll have a massive armada of stolen big ships that will with their lazors destroy any small stuff, while your armada of grabber bots just steal all of the big ships.

Anything the game throws at you will be vastly outnumbered and destroyed immediately.

just keep the big stuff defending your mothership, to avoid destroying the large enemy ships before your grabber bots get to steal them. You want them for yourself, you don't want to destroy them. There is no honor among thieves, unless you're the only thief.

Oh that old trick. Also you can get some ships to distract the ones you want to grab and they will "lock on" usually ignoring the salvagers.

Also I think it was in HW1 toward the end of the game you can capture an insane number of ion frigates in sphere formation.

Don't be stealing my thunder now. It's how you walk through the game with no effort. It's a design fault.
That game was released in 1999 when I got it. That is a 24yr old hat trick.

That's quite a big delay. That should mean substantially more work put into game, unlike the usual 1-3 months, which is basically nothing and an attempt to stave off disaster.

A bigger secret not mentioned often is that you could destroy the Junkyard Dog in original HW1 by using Gravwell units (not sure if it was still possible in the Remastered version). Depending on your force composition, sending a GravWell to lock up the Junkyard Dog drone will cause it to be immobilized, and focus-firing your Frigates and Capital ships at it would slowly melt it down. For me, it took 2 GravWells and 6 Destroyers + supporting Frigates. The Dog had a lot of health, as it's supposed to be avoided. But once you defeat it, you can casually stroll through the graveyard, destroying all the turrets, and salvaging any of the abandoned Taiidan vessels around.

And a small but fun secret/cheat, when you first meet the Bentusi for the Ion Cannon trade, if you ignore it while letting your resourcers gather as much materials as possible, you can delay the initial attack and build up a sizable force. And just before the cutscene plays, you could then initiate the trade before the Bentusi warp out. As well, if you spend your resources during that interlude, the cost of the trade changes down to a minimum amount.

In the Kadesh missions, players can also salvage the Swarmers and Fuel Pods (although the Multi-Beam frigates are the high-value targets given they had higher DPS than stock Ion Cannon Frigates). If one manages to salvage or destroy the Fuel Pods (they count as Frigates), the Swarmers end up out of fuel and pooling in clusters, and one Salvage Corvette can take a Swarmer back to be converted. I ended up with a massive line of Swarmers due to this, but it was fun being able to deploy cheap units I didn't build, and they were more useful than the regular Interceptors, although they were quite the gas guzzlers; needed to send in a Support Frigate or a Carrier to keep them fueled up.

Also I think it was in HW1 toward the end of the game you can capture an insane number of ion frigates in sphere formation.

Yeah, the "Destroy the Inhibitor" mission. I actually tested it out; you'd have to use cloak generators and salvage corvettes to sneak them out. If you steal enough, the entire formation resets and it gets harder as they're now closer to each other as they shrink the sphere down, but after a certain point, the sphere doesn't shrink any more and you can steadily steal them with a Carrier nearby. The longer you stay in the mission though, the more enemies that gradually spawn in as attack forces.

---

The only mission where it was very difficult trying to salvage anything was the one where you have to use the nebula clouds to destroy a Taiidan research station, more due to the Salvage Corvettes directly moving captured Capital Ships in a direct line to the Mothership.

That and the final mission; because if you went on a salvage spree, you'd have such a massive force that it'd basically vaporize the attack waves before you have enough time to salvage anything. Although I focused hard on trying to capture every Heavy Cruiser and Destroyer sent.

They need time to add DENUVO and EOS to their game...
I'm glad I didn't give them money during fig preorder phase.

Not really chuffed about hiding behind huge structures with my ships. If that is the bulk of the gameplay I'm out, doesn't matter how much I liked the original.

I knew it, just weeks before Q2 ends and no official date, they had to finally spill the beans what is going on. Can't say I am not disappointed. That is the one game that can take me back in front of the screen aaaand Titanfall 3, but since the latter is not in active development doesn't count. Lessons learned though, the art book from Homeworld 2's remaster reached legendary status. Costing less than 150$ at launch it is now a four-digit on Ebay. It's literary unreachable. I really hope they took notes and just print enough copies this time if they release an art book again. Why limit it when it CLEARLY sales like hot cakes????? Or at least a paid PDF version for the fans who can't get a hold of a physical copy. The collector's edition highlight at the moment is DA Mothership, Khar-Kushan with USB-powered leds.
