Western Digital introduced the WD Black SN850P M.2 NVMe Gen 4 SSD for PlayStation 5 game consoles, which is an officially-licensed PlayStation 5 accessory. The drive can also used with PCs. It comes with a factory-fitted heatsink, and has been extensively tested for compatibility with the game console. The drive comes in three capacity-based variants—1 TB (WDBBYV0010BNC-WRSN), 2 TB (WDBBYV0020BNC-WRSN), and 4 TB (WDBBYV0040BNC-WRSN. All three models offer sequential read speeds of up to 7.3 GB/s, and while the 1 TB variant offers up to 6.3 GB/s sequential writes, the 2 TB and 4 TB ones are rated for up to 6.6 GB/s sequential writes. Their write endurance is rated at 600 TBW, 1,200 TBW, and 2,400 TBW, respectively. Western Digital is backing these drives with 5-year warranties. The company didn't reveal pricing.

So that's an extra expensive edition derived from the 850X ? The specs are the same, but the price is not, funny move. I guess many sheep will still buy this because it is meant for Playstonk 5. These kinds of moves are the reason why even big companies can fail sooner or later, at least if some more people would use their brain and common sense.

If you have a PS5 you need the right spec, and with a cooler attached.
No price listed so I'll assume you are just a sore non PS owner that might have bought this for your pc had it been cheaper.

They're are cheaper ones for your type of person too you know.

You can look up the price in the WD online store ;) Just for persons like you, I did go the way. Yeah, prices are in €, but I guess you can convert it to the pound.

Also, here are the links:

The SN850P is exactly a SN850X with heat sink, the difference is the stupid PS5 certified badge and nothing else, the technical data on WD own site are 1:1 the same. I don't own a PS5 but an XBox Fridge, still don't know how this matters, but hey it is your world of thoughts.

If you like just pay the price uplift and be happy with it but don't treat anyone like you tried here. You might find someone above your level, just saying.

It's not my world, your type of person probably comes across wrong, I kinda meant someone who doesn't need a heatsink or the PS 5 version.

You brought the Salt though first post and everything, IE You set the tone.

"Playstonk 5"

I am happy to add vinegar.

Or you know just point out why it's more expensive?!.

But no I went with a Sammy.

Not sheep, uninformed. The shared branding makes it easier for the clueless parent/family member to buy something that works.

For everyone else though, yeah pretty late and useless, gen4 ssds are cheaper than ever and a heatsink to slap on it (if you feel like it, not really that important) is also super cheap (with some pretty cool solutions out there for the ps5 that replace the original cover like the one from silverstone and sabrent)

Well, it is more expensive due to **** (insert whatever floats ur boat) buyers and stupid "certified" badges. The SN850X with a heat sink is right now €24 cheaper and yes with the heat sink attached to it. So tell me where is the difference?

Well the Playstonk is how I call it every day and that is not a personal insult that you tried to come up with. You may not like how I call it, but that's how I do. It is still unclear to me how you can be offended how I call a product ;)

We might not agree on naming and on product marketing, but I did not start anything. You might felt offended somehow, but you simply could point that out and not try to under determine the person on the other side, that's bad style. If you somehow felt weird due to my naming for the PS5, there is nothing I can do except to tell that's ofc not personal, how could it be.....

These kind of word's are the reasons why you receive the reaction you did. .. sheep, playstonk

Who's offended , me nah try harder.

So at worse I called you a sore non PS owner while trying to explain why the cost difference (and f£@# do I wish I hadn't bothered) and indeed despite yourself you provided proof I had it right, and your butt hurt ass required two more stabs at conversation, like this?!.

Sooo, bye now.

Well there is a cost difference because of marketing and a kinda “certified” badge but guess what, the SN850X is the same drive with the same cooler and the same performance at a cheaper price.

So who is wrong? Not me because I can read the reviews, the spec sheets and so on and yes people that fall for such products are sheep imo and deserved to be called out and taught. It is not my job to fulfill your pr dreams but hey you still believe there is a real difference in these, you go on and buy it.

You are so easily triggered by really nothing, that's kinda funny and sad in the same way. You did not even recognize that I tried to get the conversation in the right way, so yeah, have fun and don't bother me anymore.

OK, kids (almost everyone on this thread so far), here are the salient points and/or issues without the hyperbole:

The PS5 and other consoles may have hardware, and software designs, that need SSDs with a certain performance statistics floor. It's fair to provide 'certification' for drives it's tested... or endorsed. Marketing comes into play, but it's fair as well to note the badging is like being on a glorified QVL list.

Companies may choose to price their products however they wish, and perhaps at a premium for being on some 'approved by' list; however, similar, same and other products may be [far] less expensive and offer similar -- or better -- performance than those badged by a console maker.

Credit to consumers who make well-informed choices in the free market.

Some of you are more comfortable buying first-party or 'approved by' SSDs. Others out here prefer to save money and stick on a hunk o' Amazon aluminum (al-oh-min-e-yum) for you Brits, Kiwis and Aussie friends).

So can we all calm the frak down? :)

My personal position is to thank Dog Sony didn't push some new, locked down, overpriced-by default, Memory Stick malarky... Ahem, Microsoft, I'm now looking at you.

Edit: I just realized I may be playing into Canadian stereotypes about being peacekeepers.

I am german and the stereotype demands that we don't do well with the British offsprings ;) and yeah that's a joke.

Besides that, everyone can buy what they want, but no one can tell me what I should eat from the PR dudes ;)

No comment on past thread.

I agree everyone else uses proprietary stuff not good, standard parts = joy.

As for WD they're parts are good, price is ok, it's up to the buyer thankfully and not one guy in a forum.

Thankfully, some people don't listen to PR fanfare only :)

Besides that, I do use some WD stuff in my rigs, but also I do use other depending on value and also on market share.

This is just an overpriced SN850X with a heatsink. I bought a 2TB SN850X with the heatsink and have it in my PS5 Disc and it works flawlessly. Gets similar read speeds as my 2TB SN850 in my PC. No reason to buy the version specifically made for the PS5 unless you can get it cheaper than the SN850X.
