AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT is confirmed to feature 12 GB as its standard memory size, and feature a 192-bit wide GDDR6 memory interface, according to a leaked regulatory filing by ASRock for its upcoming graphics cards. We already know from last week's mega leak of the PowerColor RX 7800 XT Red Devil that the card maxes out the "Navi 32" silicon, enabling all 60 RDNA3 CU, and comes with 16 GB of memory across the chip's full 256-bit memory bus. This filing suggests how AMD will carve the RX 7700 XT out.

Probably designed to compete with the GeForce RTX 4070, the RX 7700 XT is based on the same "Navi 32" silicon as the RX 7800 XT, but cut down. AMD is expected to disable some of the 60 CU physically present on the 5 nm GCD, while one of the four 6 nm MCDs will be disabled, giving the chip a 192-bit memory bus to drive its 12 GB of memory. We know from the PowerColor leak that the RX 7800 XT gets 18 Gbps memory speed. It remains to be seen if AMD sticks with this speed for even the RX 7700 XT, in which case, it gets 432 GB/s of memory bandwidth at its disposal. AMD is expected to launch the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT within this quarter (before October).

Probably not worth upgrading from my current 6700 XT..

6700 and this 7700 are both 192 bits, don't think will be much difference in performance, probably around 10% maximum. AMD is playing Nvidia's game anyway.

Exactly. Maybe 7800 XT would be a far better choice.

I plan to update my 6700xt to 7700xt. I have a heat-prone 6700xt (msi mech) so it's more a convenience upgrade. Performance is already enough for my needs.

Well, if AMD just lowers prices, Nvidia will follow by lowering prices as well so they can compete. Not worth it, because both companies at end didn't achieve anything other than lowering their profit margins.

Weird that they're apparently doing a full stack of 7700XT (CL, SL = Steel Legend, and PG = Phantom Gaming), but not of 7800XT (CL and SL only).

This has never happened, Nvidia does not care about what AMD does, they are the market leader.

1080 Ti because of Vega announcement? 1070 Ti because of the Vega 56? RTX 2060 299$ because of the 5600 XT? Are you kidding me?
Not to mention Nvidia's Ultra Low Latency because of AMD's Anti-Lag, making GSync available to every variable refresh rate monitor because of FreeSync, Nvidia's Image Scaling because of AMD's Radeon Super Resolution. FAR from "they do not care"

What has happened so far is that AMD lowers its prices, and Nvidia does not. That's what happens when you have a monopoly share of the market.

When did AMD lower their prices? They are almost the same as Nvidia's. They are ever so slightly cheaper because Nvidia have DLSS/FG/Better RT. A noticeable decrease in price (like 150$+) from AMD is a "threat" to Nvidia.
A 50$ reduction in price by AMD is nothing for Nvidia because they know the majority of people with pay extra 50$ to get a better product.

I was thinking of the RX 6950 XT that, in my locality at least, saw drastic price reductions earlier this year. Probably in response to the launch of the RTX 4070.

And yet. RTX 4080 16GB 1200$, the faster and more future-proof Radeon RX 7900 XTX 24GB is as low as 1000$.
nvidia doesn't compete by lowering the prices - it competes by brainwashing the customers that these have no choice.

Definitely worth upgrading my old system with a Radeon R9 390.

Why now? Better wait for Radeon RX 8700 XT in 2-3 years time.

Seriously, not only the moore's law is long dead and buried, but if these pitiful rebrands masked as "new releases" go on, sooner or later the graphics market will also be dead.
Simply because there will be very few people who would need to upgrade (there will be nothing to upgrade with) or need replacement cards.

Nvidia doesn't care about AMDs cheaper prices on RX 6000 series cards because they know that it's only to get rid of the leftover stock. The 6800 XT wasn't even available in my country for months now.

Percentage wise, 200$ more isn't that much. 270$ (7600) to 320$ (4060) is a 20% increase in price, 1000$ to 1200$ is also a 20% increase in price. And if you have a thousand bucks to spend you would also, most likely, have an extra 200$ to spend.
Nvidia basically charges a 20% premium for their products because they are just better. DLSS/FG/Reflex/Better RT and even better drivers.

Nvidia isn't charging the premium, their products came out 1st. AMD is admitting that they think their products are worth 20% less when they released theirs.

Well, no. This was a marketing move by AMD to position the 16Gb RX 6950 XT at a similar price to the 12GB RTX 4070, and there was an advertising campaign of sorts around the idea of why settle for less VRAM at the same price. The supplier concerned in my locality does not issue sales data or best seller lists. They do designate products as 'Hot Sellers', and have one RX 6950 XT so labelled and four RTX 4070 cards. So the price reduction seems to have had some impact on AMD sales, whether that's at the expense of Nvidia sales is hard to say.

Nvidia's brainwashing is pretty close to apple's level. People don't even think, they just buy.

Would a repaste and some better fans not suffice? My OC'd GTX 980 (don't remember the power draw but it was definitely more than a 6700XT) with a very similar MSI cooler ran cool and quiet with a repaste and a fan curve.

Not completely true, Nvidia has in the past lowered their prices when AMD undercut them on price/performance in the past. We used to see stories like the one below all the time.

With the launch of AMD’s new flagship Radeon R9 290X only a couple of days behind us, NVIDIA has wasted surprisingly little time in responding the latest salvo in the unending GPU wars. Intended to coincide with the launch of NVIDIA’s holiday GeForce game bundle, the launch of ShadowPlay (more on that later today), and the final (non-beta) release of GameStream, NVIDIA has rounded out their Monday by announcing a pair of price cuts for their high-end consumer video cards, and set a launch date and a launch price for their recently announced GTX 780 Ti. First and foremost, both GeForce GTX 780 and GeForce GTX 770 are getting price cuts, effective tomorrow (October 29th). GTX 780 will be reduced by $150 to $499, and meanwhile GTX 770 will be getting smaller $70 trim, bringing the price of that card down to $329. For the GTX 770 this is something of a delayed price cut – AMD launched their competitive Radeon R9 280X just shy of 3 weeks ago – but as the saying goes it’s never too late. Between the two GTX 770 is about 5% faster while 280X has the 3GB memory advantage, so $329 won’t significantly threaten the 280X but it is where we would have expected NVIDIA to place it given their performance advantage.

When has it really been worth it to upgrade generation to generation, let alone the same class of GPU.

Very often, actually. I upgraded Radeon HD 4890 to Radeon HD 6870 (which was on par performance wise with Radeon HD 5870).

Users can safely upgrade their RTX 3090s with new RTX 4090. Because the performance difference is substantial:

Compared to a 6700 XT the 7700 XT is actually is getting a significant uplift. 2560 to 3456 or 3072 and double the ROP 64 to 128, is massive.
7800 XT on the other hand is getting a decrease 4608 to 3840 shading units and supposedly keeping the same performance lowering the price.

While it would be fair to say there must be people that fit this description, I hope you're not insinuating all NVidia buyers are brainwashed. It's possible to be a savvy, informed, value/feature/ecosystem seeking buyer and purchase Apple, Nvidia or AMD products.
