I think all companies do this to be honest, Nvidia does it, wait 7 months and Apples latest laptop or ipad will be slashed heavily in price on Costco website, and so on and so forth.
Nvidia is doing a different thing, they are intentionally trying to shift all anchor prices up, both to protect the sales of old Ampere stock and for the future GPU market.

AMD said on multiple accounts that they expected the 7900XT to sell like hot cakes. Some people in their marketing department are simply not that connected to reality. And they still did it again with the 7700.

Again, I would need to see more data to agree or disagree with you. Amazon sold out of 7900 XT's on two occasions, I know this much, and they are the biggest player in the United States.

Oh, in France the 7900XT seemed to sell pretty well, but that was due to the fact that it sold under MSRP very fast, while Nvidia is not available at MSRP.

I bought a 7900XTX in August, if I wanted to go team green I would've got a 4070Ti for the same price, so at this point there's no comparison.

The question is if it sold well at the original MSRP. That I am pretty skeptic of.

Keyboard Logitech MX Keys (not Cherry MX at all)
VR HMD Samsung Oddyssey, not that I'd plug it into this though....
Software W10 21H1, barely
Benchmark Scores I once clocked a Celeron-300A to 564MHz on an Abit BE6 and it scored over 9000.
I would need more data on this before I could agree or disagree with you, Mindfactory is only one place, and the 7900 xt's sold out fast during the Prime Day sales, in fact I had to wait for re-stock to get my current MERC 7900 XT, 3 weeks wait after i placed the order with shipped and sold by amazon.

not saying you aren't right, but I would need more data than just Mindfactory (which is a good starting place), but we don't have access to the other places data. I think 7900 xt sold very well during the prime day sales though, and Amazon is a big mover. Newegg and best buy also lowered their prices to match Amazon those two days too... so yeah, a lot of radeon was moved then.
You've probably just proved my point. They only sold at all when heavily discounted.

How much did you pay for your $899 7900XT when it was on sale? People will usually only buy things when they're at the right price, and $899 was not the right price.

I don't have that many sources for sales data - Mindfactory and Cowcotland published sales data, HUB monthly updates, MLID comments on the state of the GPU market, forum chat from OCUK sales staff.

Edit - Never mind, I looked it up; Prime Day sale price was $735, which is a fair-to-good price for the 7900XT Merc, IMO.

Alternate.de got it on sale for 1K

https://www.alternate.de/SAPPHIRE/S...se-Gaming-OC-Grafikkarte/html/product/1888733 its the best I could find and it looks like only for another 2 hours from posting this.
They've been 1.1K for a long time already, also in NL.
If they drop to 900 we're talking, but I reckon we can wait a bit...

People need to start realizing that every blurb out of a company on whatever medium IS marketing. The expectation is the marketing. If everyone buys it, why wouldn't you?

It's related to the euro-USD exchange rate too. The euro is very low ATM, so you won't see these discounts. I bought my XTX for 960 euro when the euro was stronger in the beginning of August.

You might think it is related but it clearly is not. The best evidence: when the euro was way stronger than the dollar few years ago it was still much more expensive here compared to the US. We have a very toxic master to slave relationship with the US.

I didn't say it's exclusively related to the exchange rate, both influences are present, the one I am talking about and the one you are talking about. It's just that the exchange rate explains the very recent rebound in GPU prices, and not the slave relationship, which is always there. It's just because of oil prices going up.
If you want to buy import merch in euro, one of the best moments is in August each year, it's when the exchange rate is most favourable. If you use keepa for amazon, you quickly see the trend.

Drop the 7800 XT to 500-550EUR and it's an even more great deal.
