AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT Now as Low as $399

An interesting development in the performance segment of graphics cards is price adjustments among SKUs such as the AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti. The RX 7700 XT was spotted at a new low price of $399 by VideoCardz. At this price, the card ends up at least $40 below the lowest price we could find on Newegg for the RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB, and about the same price as its 8 GB variant. This is an interesting development, as the RX 7700 XT is a significantly faster GPU than the RTX 4060 Ti in our testing, posting 14% higher performance on average than the RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB, and 13% higher than the RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB at 1080p, with the NVIDIA cards only beating it by 1-2% in ray tracing workloads, in our testing. The specific custom RX 7700 XT selling for $399 is an ASRock RX 7700 XT Challenger OC, which is listed on Newegg for $449, but with a coupon code that shaves $50 off.

Pretty sure hardware unboxed specifically moved to rx7000 for video editing due to some bugs with Nvidia hardware

By 'equivalent RTX 4000 series' you mean 4060Ti 8GB ?

From TPU Review the 4060Ti 8GB is like 13%-18% sometimes 30% behind the 7700XT depending on resolution.

The very same 7700 XT is ~594 $ where I live and the cheapest 8 GB 4060 Ti is ~502 $/585 $ for the 16 GB version.

That is probably because 16GB vs 12 GB for not much more.

These cards are too expensive. Only Intel seem to care about serving us with compelling products for attractive prices. That statement speaks volumes for where we are in the GPU space. Truly the only thing I am excited for in GPU (right now) are those Phoenix APUs coming down the pipe.

7800 XT MSRP is fine. It's only the 7700 XT that's a bit on an expensive side. $400 is fine for it.

Nah, demand for 7700 XT is just so low. About 20 to 40 times lower than 7800 XT's one where I live.

I went back and looked at some numbers, and had something of a recalibration moment. The GTX 1070, which is nearly universally well-regarded, launched at $380 in 2016, which is just about $480 in today's money, and pulled low 40s in the most demanding games of the time at 1440p. The 7700 XT is in the 30s in today's heaviest hitters at 4K (TPU testing). That's a pretty good showing in comparison, tbh, even at the $450 launch price. Too bad it needs an extra 80 watts (!) or so vs the 1070 to accomplish that.

Yeah I also noticed that not so long ago (early September I guess) but 7700 XT falls short due to it being the worst value RDNA3 SKU if we don't count 7900 GRE nonsense.

That was true at launch pricing, but I don't think that's so right now. It's worse in efficency vs. both the 7600 and 7800 XT, but falls right between those two based on current street price (lowest PCPP as of post). The 7800's currently at the perf/$ that the 7700 was to start, and the 7700's better than the 7800 was at the time.

I agree that getting things for free is nice and pleasant but let's be realistic: $300 CAD 7700 XT would lead to a necessity to halve the price of all other GPUs. Neither AMD nor nVidia will agree on this manoeuver.

If 7800 XT was 30+ % more expensive EVERYWHERE I'd agree with you but this only applies to the US and to a couple certain RX 7700 XT makes which can run outta stock shortly due to this discount. This difference is also offset by other PC components: an average 7800 XT PC is about $1240 whereas 1120 USD for the same PC but with a 7700 XT is about getting 16% more performance for 10% more price. This difference is also offset by other PC components: an average 7800 XT PC is about $1240 whereas 1120 USD for the same PC but with a 7700 XT is about getting 16% more performance for 10% more price. Seems more than reasonable to spend another $120 on a GPU. Doesn't apply to those who just buy a GPU and don't upgrade the rest of the system but you can't ignore such people. As a budget-constrained builder, I used to spend that extra $120 for the GPU. As in the entire thing. That builder still hangs out in my head, so coming 'round to that mode of thinking is ... difficult.

Interesting tidbit: I grabbed the median price of both cards from PCPP, and ended up with $450 and $550. So the 7700 XT is thus far still selling at launch RRP, and the 7800 XT is going for a $50 premium. That gives us $4.36/fr for the 7700 and $4.74/fr from a 7800. Much closer than if looking at min prices, but advantage 7700 XT nonetheless.

That's a very huge "if" to say the least. There is no news on their upcoming Battlemage GPUs regarding their actual performance, efficiency, feature set, and, of course, price. If Intel don't deliver (the most likely scenario) then changes are unlikely to come.

If intel delivers a performance-competitive product, they'll list it in the ball park with similarly-performing parts, probably at a slight discount to sweeten the value proposition. If that doesn't work, then it's price cuts. If it does work, and starts cutting too far in to RDNA sales, AMD will only drop prices to the point where sales recover. That could very well still be above the hypothetical Battlemage equivalent. Maybe that kicks off a price war, maybe not. That's far enough in the future that it's hardly worth speculating on.

According to the narrative XeSS in some cases is better than DLSS in some applications. If they can match AMD in raster to within 90% they will be golden. I don't think it matters how well they perform to influence the price. Intel knows that they have to fight in the budget space. That is probably why they are hyping Meteor Lake so much right now. 90% of a 7900 XTX will be a tall order. It would require increasing performance by 2.25x in one generation; Battlemage is very unlikely to pull that off. Matching a 7800 XT in raster while beating a 7900 XT in ray tracing would be a pretty fantastic outcome for Intel. To forestall disappointment, I'm expecting the raster performance of a 7700 XT and the ray tracing performance of a 3070 Ti.
