Two months ago, NVIDIA introduced its GeForce RTX 40 SUPER series to the market, bringing a trio of models: RTX 4070 SUPER, RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, and RTX 4080 SUPER. Today, according to the report from ComputerBase, NVIDIA's latest trio has recorded a drop in pricing recently, and it now retails under MSRP in German stores. The RTX 4070 SUPER started with an MSRP of 659 Euros ($599 in the US) and is now available from 589 Euros. Its older brother, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, started with an MSRP listing of 889 Euros ($799 in the US) and is now retailing from 840 Euros. Lastly, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER has been listed at 1,109 Euros ($999 in the US) and is now retailing with a small discount at 1,092 Euros.

Once NVIDIA launched a new GPU generation, it became a custom for these cards to be retailed over their MSRP long before prices were adjusted and settled. However, with the latest SUPER refresh, this seems to be one of the fastest price adjustments. This could be caused by either an improvement in the supply chain or leveled supply and demand, making it so that these cards are finally trading below their launch-level MSRPs.

4080 (super, or vanilla - doesn't matter, performance basically the same) should've have costed max. 900$ from the beginning.

Calculating perf/cost - if 4080 is 40-50% faster than 3080 with MSRP of 700$, then having to pay 1000-1050$ for the former gives us the exact same ratio, as with the latter... ...except 3080 is 3,5 years old so basically there's no progress at all (or a very small one if we include inflation). And yet nV tried to scam us for 1200$ and now they gracefully lowered the price down to 1000$? Yeah... no.

German economy is not doing well, IFO and ZEW current survey show much more deterioration than the official numbers... The last thing on a lot of people's minds in tough economic times is buying an expensive graphics card.

Wondering if we're on the road back to pre covid price levels now for cards, even if it may take a few years to get there..?

Good to see, but drop them another $2-300, and they might just start selling in significant numbers, seeins how they were way overpriced from day 1 :D

They don't have to do anything. Right now they're one of the hottest companies on the planet.

"NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) today reported revenue for the fourth quarter ended January 28, 2024, of $22.1 billion, up 22% from the previous quarter and up 265% from a year ago."

And even in "Gaming" (with internal revenue transfers, no doubt):

"Fourth-quarter revenue was $2.9 billion, flat from the previous quarter and up 56% from a year ago. Full-year revenue rose 15% to $10.4 billion."

I increased it cause the MSRP hasn't changed since 2018 (RTX 2080) and You have to count in the inflation and it's rate was not insignificant for the last few years.

IMO 850-900$ would've been a reasonable price for 4080... 1,5 years ago.

The Elephant in the room is that AMD outsells Nvidia in Germany. If they are already cheaper, guess what?

more ... More ... MOAR ... I want MOOOAAAARRRRRR ... unlimited powwwaaa.

There is absolutely no reason to have 4080 or 4090 cards at any reasonable prices.

These are luxury, over the top items and as such should be priced like luxury, over the top items.

Just like a Lambo or a Ferrari.

This silicon would be better used to improve productivity in various projects rather than pushing ridiculous amount of frames in games.

There are games out now that force you to use upscaling on RTX 4090 at 4K even without ray-tracing, just to achieve 60 fps. And we're getting 240 Hz+ 4K monitors. And of course there are VR units that require even more GPU power than that.

But yeah, we could just use 1024x768 resolution, dial all the sliders down. Or even better, stop playing silly games!

There is absolutely not need for any of this.

A mid level graphics card from two generations ago can spew ungodly, vomit inducing levels of detail.

It is now an arms race that has lost all meaning except furious entitlement.

I guess some people can't go buy some groceries if they have'nt got a supercar.

Haha yea, it might be time for me to take out my trusty old CRT from 1999. That thing is exactly that resolution. It will be great for RT performance on a 3060! I can almost taste the 60 fps!!

I took the cheapest models:
4080:
First price : € 1295,57
Last price : € 1019,00
Difference : -22 %
Minimum price : € 1019,00
Maximum price : € 1324,15

4080S:
First price : € 1149,00
Last price : € 1079,00
Difference : -7 %
Minimum price : € 1099,00
Maximum price : € 1149,00

I dont see these big saving Nvidia promised. By the time 4080S launched the vanilla 4080 had already fallen below MSRP.
Yes the 4080 initial and maximum prices are higher than on the 4080S but i doubt many bought the 4080 when it came out.

For example in 15th July 2023 and again on 16th August 2023 the 4080 had a price of ~1150€ - the same price 4080S launched at more than half a year later.

Strawman after strawman ... You wouldn't want us to return to 320x240x256, no ?

There is no need for high end graphics cards for gaming, and since AMD will not be pursuing the high-end anymore ...

Luxury items -> luxury prices ...

And thanks for subsidizing the hardware of those of us with non-compensating needs ?

While I understand your argument...you really should consider history.

When crypto boomed AMD and Nvidia basically gave the finger to gamers...until they launched low hash rate variations of card. This did them great...because miners were willing to buy cards at basically any price. Then that market collapsed...and Nvidia and AMD didn't have a great couple of quarters. What did them well was the rise of AI. At some point AI is going to saturate...and there's nothing in the pipeline. I...don't think that giving your core consistent consumers the finger is a stable decision...

But it's great for short term stock dividends....

But even when crypto nosedived Nvidia didn't panic and held their prices at or above MSRP, even when noone was buying cards.

That was true early in 2018 when Nvidia sold tons of GTX 1080 and 1080 TI to miners, and when crypto failed, the prices remained abnormally high, and in September 2018 we got GTX 2080 that was barely faster than GTX 1080 Ti, and at release had worse price / performance than discounted GTX 1080 Ti's. We were told we shouldn't look at the price in the shops but the original release day price. And that we should be buying the GTX 20x0 cards for ray-tracing and DLSS, although after two years there were used in just a handful of games, and quickly after the next generation hit it was obvious old cards won't be powerful enough for any ray-tracing.

And this again repeated with RTX 30x0 - extremely high crypto inflated prices for most of the generation, and after the (inevitable) crypto crash prices didn't really fall to MSRP (except for the cards that were released mid-crypto, like 3090), although no one was buying the cards at inflated prices. And when RTX 40x0 released we were told even here on TechPowerUP in a $1200 RTX 4080 review we should really compare the card to RTX 3090 and it's inflated MSRP during cryptoinsanity! A sentence they edited after it was pointed out how insane that reasoning is, but it is obvious this is still common thinking.

Those aren't "short term" events now, because nothing normalizes when they are over.

I'm quite sure Nvidia would be (secretly) pushing the Ethereum successor now with the new crypto value surge, but they are to busy with the exploding AI market... Maybe they can somehow combine both markets?

Bahahaha, absolutely perfect!

Yeah I'm not seeing any big price movements in the UK. I can't imagine people are rushing out to buy at the moment, what with inflation & all that jazz hitting our pockets.

At some point AI is going to saturate...and there's nothing in the pipeline. I...don't think that giving your core consistent consumers the finger is a stable decision...

I would like someone to explain the argument and finish this sentence :

I am entitled to a small price high-end graphics card, because ...

If crypto was always a delusion, and whatever the technological flavor it has, it is only a function of how much fiat money people are actually pourring in it.

IA on the other hand create stuff, create value and create income. IA will not saturate anymore than the web has saturated. We may have a bubble, that may pop because of overinvestment, but IA and all the myriads variations around it are pretty much here to stay and grow.

That means that actual steady production capacity will have to exist to feed it. But that also means that gaming is not the only game in town anymore, and there must be a reason why a GPU provider would prefer to create a solution for gaming rather than a solution for IA.

And you have then to consider that after that, they may be more SIMD friendly usages that will appear.

The 4090 should be pricey yes, but the 4080 should not have been a four figure card, period.
