True, ATX was never designed for anything like what we have now with so many big, hot and massive power draw components. It's about time it was redesigned from the ground up, it would be a nightmare but it really needs to be done. It will have to be done eventually.
Not really much to do. To support cards like this you need to remove them from being supported by the PCB entirely with a Riser, make more cases that flip the motherboard 90 degees to put majority of the support on the case, create ATX-ES(Extra Screw) that requires a dozen screws supporting the first PCIe slot, or make a new ATX-90 standard that basically does what the 90 degree cases do, but swaps where the GPU PCIe slot is with the RAM slots in the current ATX standard.

I really do think they need to revise the specs if this is the trend. Perhaps redesign the board so that one x16 slot is above the CPU area, which could free up vertical space above the motherboard. Then it would just be a matter of the case supporting the dimensions of the card. They could even compartmentalize the GPU and CPU areas, allowing for independent airflow and cooling, better GPU and CPU cooler support, and better routing of power cables. They might even be able to do this without having to increase the overall case dimensions if they get creative with PSU placement.
We could call it BTX...

Do you still have the strength of a 8yr old virgin boy? That's always a nice addition to blaming nvidia for no fault of their own.

You are going to have to try a lot harder than that to live up to your name.

Didn’t BTX move all the PCIe slots above the CPU? I’m taking about just one above and the rest below. Then you could probably even get closer to mATX in board size but still serve more like an ATX. I know one issue is all the traces and CPU proximity though.

Benchmark Scores I once clocked a Celeron-300A to 564MHz on an Abit BE6 and it scored over 9000.
We knew it would be 600W already, and we knew Nvidia had a 4-slot cinderblock cooler already prototyped. Now all we need are the specs and the price. If it's twice as fast at AI as a 4090 it'll cost $4000 - that's my guess.

ATX motherboard design is so out of date for dGPUs now.

We need something mATX-sized with a single PCIE x16 slot at the top, and then the three slots below it are just low-profile things like CMOS battery, M.2 slots, chipset maybe. There's no way you're plugging anything into the 5th or 6th slot of an ATX board with this, that'll block the fans of your 600W GPU which is a huge problem, and those few ATX boards with a 7th slot are usually just a token x1 hanging off the chipset for a 2nd NIC or BT card.

Just how much weight is more than a PCIe slot can handle unless these GPU's come with 2x GPU support brackets I can't see the usual 1 being enough to stop it pulling the PCIe slot off the mobo (even those with the metal shield around them) if I was still using my RV02 case it probably wouldn't be a problem as the gpu is mounted 90 degrees rotated so hangs from the top down but unless your going to use a vertical mount I wouldn't use it in the normal way otherwise you'll most likely rip the PCIe slot off your mobo

There havn't been any fires, and no more further melting reports since people stopped using CableMod Adapters.
Actually yes there has and it wasn't a cableMod adapter it was the PSU supplied 12VHPwr cable and it melted at both ends and northridge fix on YT is still getting them sent to him for repair to this day so just because the initial spait or public reporting of the problem isn't so virulent now it doesn't mean it's not still going on

Does Nvidia still provide the 12pin power connector that can catch on fire? That's always a nice addition to a $2K+ card.
Literally lol’d at this. That was perfectly pricelessly put!!!

Couldn't care less about these "grand and above". However this raises bar for "inacceptable", and creates the dangerous trend, to catch up by AIBs, etc, making it "okay". That's why there are triple slot triple fan 3060/4060 etc.
And what's even more disastrous, is the overall, global acceptance of power hungry cards, thus throwing the power efficiency out of the window. They really could sell cards with lower clocks, and voltage, hence no need for huge enormous cooling solutions. And everyone wanting higher clocks, could do so, because there would be a room for such endeavours.
Anyway, the PCBs in these cards are scr'wed one way or another. The amount of pressure and bending due to heat and thermal cycling is enormous.

 This GPU is pure insanity. Watch all the sheeple push us into climate crisis so they can sell you some BS technology that makes them better than all the rest. Nvidia needs to be charged with crimes against humanity!

People don't get it. The size of 12HPWR is virtually the same as 8pin PCIE (minifit) one, with later having the pins twice as thick and sturdy, and able to pass more current, and still being able to pull only 350W max. What could possibly go wrong, with the new connector being so brittle? How can smaller flimsy connector, with way thinner contacts, be as reliable as 8-pin Mini-Fit, while providing much higher current and power throughput.

Seriously...........

It's about time these cards came with a full cover block, chances are if you have the cash to buy these, you have a custom loop.

If not, it should come with some sort of CLC liquid cooler. Even if i did have the cash i'd rather pass than shoe horn this turd into my case.

I can't wait to see some of the scoffers trying to fit one of these in their case

That's so you know when the card's expiration has passed and you need to buy a new one. Remember Jensen's sage advice. "The more you buy, the more you save." Stock up on a few extras for when the expiration comes. It'll come sooner than you think.

Might as wel forgo reducing the voltage and just feed the brick 230v after passing it trough some rectifiers

4 Slot design oh boy. Motherboard makers might want to redesign their boards. Case makers might want to do the same thing or maybe something new that would fit it somewhere?
Come to think of it. It also points to what the power consumption might be more or less. It wont be little that's for sure.

Definitely this card is an example that the legacy PC standard is not applicable any more. They need this card with quadruple elongated PCIe slots to hold it properly over the motherboard, and at least 3 PCIe 12VHPWR connectors.

Good lord, this is a monstrosity. I can't believe people are entertaining thoughts of how to squeeze even bigger, more power hungry beasts in to PCs. I will withhold my thoughts on this and just say I personally would like to see manufacturers dedicate more resources to reducing size and power consumption.

What percentage of builds end up equipped with these monstrosities?
there Needs to come a hpc form factor that isn’t immediately threadripper with 8 memory channels and $2000 boards

These are for riche rich types, not sure they will care about cost or power use, only will it fit in their case.

It isn't about percentages. Mindfactory alone in Germany has already sold 9,390 RTX 4090, if their statistics is to be believed. https://www.mindfactory.de/Hardware/Grafikkarten+(VGA)/GeForce+RTX+fuer+Gaming/RTX+4090.html

The average GPU power consumption has increased. While 15 years ago users had 50-watt GPUs, today many have 200-watt GPUs.

A pass-through design with some X-shaped trim? Where have I seen this before? Oh yes! On every other Nvidia card in the last 5 years.

So where's the "leak"?

It's in the details, take note of the locations of the mating surfaces. It's going to be a multi-pcb card.

So it'll be even more unserviceable than previous Nvidia cards. Gotcha.

It's only the 5090, mind you. Not the whole 50-series.
