NVIDIA Hit with DOJ Antitrust Probe over AI GPUs, Unfair Sales Tactics and Pricing Alleged

Customer: I want more GPUs
Nvidia: we are shipping full systems at the moment, you can get GPUs but you will have to wait 4 years.
Customer: AMD has GPUS
Nvidia: it would be a shame if something happened with your other orders....

same thing happened with AMD DIY processors vs intel (around) 20 years ago. intel had a “invisible“ quota for a store to get discounts on sold intel processors. and because invisible, you did not know how many AMD processors you could sell before intel did not give you the discount.

but nothing going to come of it. because Nvidia is not going to opensource “CUDA”…

Even when I started going to the PC store workers told me that Intel would even offer discounts on their new CPUs so that they could recommend them.

Ngreedia pulling an Intel move that illegally affects AMD?

Noooooo, i don’t believe it.

Lets see what the local white knights will spin on their defense.

Meanwhile, this week karma has come full force in AMD favor. Only company missing in getting a karma slap is dell.

Really happy otherwise with this week.

As someone that supported AMD because they were the underdog this post is priceless.

The starting price of 1080TI was $699

CUDA is the only reason nGreedia is in the finantial position it is right now.

If somebody could get it to cork with AMD cards, and AMD kept their prices fair and met production demand, then we can say goodbye to nGreedia, who would suddenly remember " THE WAY IT’S MEANT TO BE PLAYED" again.

after months of rumors, it finally come to pass, I hope $NVDA loses

What a fun hate circlejerk this thread is. Nvidia lives rent free in quite a few minds it would seem.

Hopefully the truth is found out, and if any wrongdoing is proven, then it must be punished.

Where is Dr Dro now with his making fun of me supporting AMD morally? You cannot really speak about Nvidia in this light without getting political so I won't.

I lost money getting stuck with defective laptops during bumpgate, I havent bought nvidia since.

Why do you think amd is moral? Do they have better behaved shareholders or what? What is your theory?

Im fully certain that all of them are trying to scum us out our money. All of them.

Show me any article that AMD has the same tactics as Intel and Nvidia. History is on the side of my argument. Here is some food for thought on it. AMD has not yet released the 9000 chips to everyone (with the 13th/14Th iisue) and guess what? They are actually cheaper than 7000. That totally belies your argument. I could also use Freesync/VRR or the fact that AMD supports Linux since whenever but other than the fact that they are in the same space there is no comparison between AMD and Nvidia. One has been adding partners while the other screwed one of the most beloved companies in this space (EVGA) and no one blinked. As said before this is a DOJ investigation.

Define "same tactics".

And the zen 3 were ~50% more expensive than zen 2. Does that make them immoral? If not, then how does them lowering the prices makes them moral? They lower the prices cause their eg. R7 can't compete with intel's' i7. Has nothing to do with morality. Last gen they offered half the core counts (literally) for the same MSRP as Intel. That didn't go so well so they had to quickly drop prices.

Can your boss call you immoral cause you didn't accept a price cut? I mean I don't see how prices have anything to do with morality.

How does them support linux make them more moral? Maybe we have a different definition of morality.

Paying Dell to not recommend that AMD exists. Telling board partners that they cannot use the same nomenclature. Threatening a YT channel with loss of sponsorship money to not giive negatve reviews. Nickel and Diming customers for 10 years with MB updates every 6 months that break compatibility. Do you need any more ?

AMD gets away with as much screwing us as they possibly can, fortunately (?) for them, they have far more limited reach and ability to do so. But a fair few examples do spring to mind. The problem is, if you bring them up, buy there's a good half dozen or so people in this thread frothing at the mouth with the chance to explain away or defend those actions. Rent free.

It's hard for me to reconcile the fact that nvidia clearly abuses its market position with practices that hurt everyone but themselves with the fact that their products are really good. My personal experience with GF is better than my experience with GCN/RDNA2 cards I had. Not that the latter was really that bad, but it required more troubleshooting for sure.
