I wonder if there is a technical term for this phenomena where things which used to serve a purely functional purpose become overburdened with increasingly bizarre decorations as time goes on. Have they thought of putting a display on the backplate of video cards yet ? Surely it's just a matter of time until they do it.

Yes, lots of graphics card and keyboards etc. have LCD screens.
