ASRock Phantom Gaming B850 Riptide Wi-Fi

I love the Riptide boards. They have so much function.

Riptide and PG are always fairly solid offerings from Asrock IIRC

It's disappointing that $213 is considered budget for B850, since B650 boards with decent VRMs start at about $150. I guess as long as B650 isn't going anywhere that's okay, An extra $60 just to get a graphics slot upgraded from PCIe 4.0 to 5.0 is hard to swallow when it's going to make less than 1% difference, perhaps time will change both pricing and GPU bandwidth requirements.

This board looks good, however I have built with 2 Asrock boards and they both produce coil whine. Is that common with this brand?

Coil whine is a system-wide event. You might hear it specifically from a graphics card, motherboard VRMs, or a power supply but you're just hearing the symptoms of a complex and poorly-understood total system.

$1000 motherboards with 18-phase VRMs can whine while the cheapest parts can run silently, and vice versa. If you have a combination of parts that causes whine, try a different combination. I personally feel that PSU choice has more of an impact on coil whine in a system than anything else, but I've also definitely come across graphics cards that whine the same way regardless of which system it's dumped into.

Its nice that this board has a thermistor cable
It's not so nice to see no 20gbps or 40gbps usb port.

this is more a 120€ board and not a 210us dollar board. Nothing expensive on it. the 2.5gbps Ethernet port classifies this board as entry board. Only one HDMI port and no DP connectors on teh io panel. Only one monitor connection makes it at the end of the day just a cheap board. I did not write 80€ but i just see it as 80€. 2.5gb ethernet and the fancy audio chip are not real benefits

I bought the ASRock B850 Livemixer board, has a load of USB ports and 2 extra PCi-e slots and was cheaper than the riptide (under £200) Thought it wasn't the worst value.

Is the PCB black or a dark blue?

So much hate over a good motherboard. The funny thing is people say this is a $150 board but guess what they haven't been that price for years. This is Top of the middle segment and they have been that price for years now. Top B650 boards are the same as it was with B450 boards.
It sure as hell beats for instance the other higher placed board of MSI the Tomahawk. That board lacks USB ports. Guess what you use the most nowadays.... USB ports.

Not really. MSI B550 gaming edge wifi was on amazon.de = 20€ extra - only 156€ with free shipping. Kinda similar performance when you consider the tech age and the years have passed.
High end MSI X570 tomahawk wifi was 205€. I think we bought it from cyberport.at / Amazon had at that time / Alza.at had at that time also only 210-220€ with shipping

2.5GB Ethernet is kinda very long on the mainboards. I doubt there are higher costs for PCIE 5.0 graphic card slot vs PCIE 4 graphic card slot. It's only the pcb. Parts are less these days. Nearly same audio chip.

all prices with 20% tax. ~4 years ago. Prices from my computer / computers I have build myself

Thanks for the in depth review! A while back I ran across (can't remember what channel) a youtube bunch who were really dissing Asrock...apparently to the point where the manufacturer declined to send them any boards to review. Left me with the impression that the company was second or third tier in quality. Everything I have seen since has been positive. Pays to look at multiple reviews if I can find them. Maybe these folks just got some lemons I dunno. Also pleased to see optical output for audio, I was afraid this alternative was disappearing from existence. Had to buy a sound blaster to get optical for my current htpc setup. Hope the hdmi setups will give good audio quality, I've never used sound from a vid card. Old Yamaha receiver has no hdmi so I will need to upgrade that too. $$$$$

youtubers or shall i name them paid reviewers. Check jay2cents and hardware unboxed statements about asus, corsair and some other brands.

and yes some companies do not provide samples for various reasons. youtuber always claim it's because of a bad review.
