Trump Exempts Electronics and GPUs from China Tariffs to Ease Tech Costs

The US has a lot of cheap labor working on farms and in factories, it can't be that hard to press a few buttons on automated machines making phones or laptops.

I don't want to get into this too much though, it makes no sense why TPU is allowing politics, but I know why they are for obvious reasons.
-Sigh-

Cheap labor in the United States and cheap labor in China and the countries I mentioned are on completely different planets right? They aren't comparable on any scale.

Trump made an exception for farm workers, these tariffs are pointless when exceptions keep being made.
And no people outside the US reading news headlines don't know how it works.
Fact is it's so flipfloppy I doubt we, ICE, or anyone know how it works.

Fetanyl comes from China now? Jesus christ this is comical.
Well yes, it's the worlds manufacturer of precursors for pretty much every complex chemical product.
Also practically all modern designer drugs come from China.

If China were to crack down on people selling precursors on a list, Cartels would have a much harder time making fentanyl is places like Mexico.

I highly doubt there is anyone who in their right mind thinks it's a bad idea to try and prevent that extremely dangerous drug getting on the street

He didn't say precursors or designer drugs though... and I really honestly doubt your statement. Not that that matters. Goal posts are in outer space. Bye bye guys.

There is plenty of labor to go around when inflation and unemployment numbers are likely much higher than the govt wants to admit.
Again, if you're curious, you can see the methodology yourself for how the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics calculates inflation (consumer price index) and unemployment. Don't settle for vague accusations of conspiracy: it's fair to say that the numerical trends don't match your personal perception, but you should try to identify what in particular you think is wrong with the methodology. People at BLS have worked on these statistical methods for many years, and try to get it right.

Its not so hard to understand.

Who had dinner with Trump most recently?

Trump reportedly suspends Nvidia H20 export ban plan after $1 million dinner with Jensen Huang

So Trump has dinner about 3 days ago with Jensen Huang with $1 Million being exchanged... and suddenly H20 AI chips are allowed to be exported to China while US Tariffs vs semiconductors mysteriously vanish?

Really cheap price for corruption these days. That's my overall surprise. $1 Million is really small and less than what I'd expect for these kinds of changes.

Has anyone tried comparing them on a logarithmic scale?

I agree with the fact that all of this should have been covered in highschool economics but it's important to keep the conversation civil, if only to keep in line with the rules. Trust me I'n angry too. But getting banned for insults helps nobody.
These people stopped being civil a long time ago. I refuse to enable their pretense. If the mods have a problem with my statements, then they have a problem with all that is truthful and good in this world. There comes a time when the line must be drawn, and I draw it here.

That's the understanding US customs seems to be following:

But then he literally called this news "fake news" saying something about it being moved to a different tariff "bucket" this morning (and emphasis on no exemptions) on Truth Social.

Yeah. Your guess is as good as mine whats going on.

Could China put on a 100% export tax/surcharge/whatever on video cards? or no since it's made for an American company Intel/Nvidia/AMD and parts like the gpu come from other countries??

This thread is ramping fast.

All the folks you quoted in your outburst have been, IMO, civil in this thread.

There's only one requirement for participation at TPU: you're an aging computer geek with nostalgia for internet forums. It's not exactly a growing audience. Let's not chase off the few that remain.

I often read the accusation that Trump voters are content to suffer, so long as their political opponents suffer more. Well, let me ask: does insulting random people on the internet make you feel better? Probably not... hopefully not. Is your objective to make those people feel miserable or unwelcome? Do you see where I'm going with this?

"Be the change you want to see" is trite, but also the only way I know how to encourage the kind of forum I want to participate in.

Well, he folded quickly.
Though the latest message that he has not made any exception regarding China makes me laugh at this.

All would just be shipped to Mexico and Canada, "remanufactured" and enter the US tarrif free. So would be a great boost to them.

I'm not surprised this concept is pretty much foreign to most if not all of the first world. The redirection and rebadging (or even remanufacture) of goods for tax evasion purposes (or even the import of prohibited items) has been one of the oldest tricks in the book.

Not that it truly needs to get that far, I mean. Paying off crooked border patrol authorities to let a "shipment" through has long since become folk tale in my country, as the entry of goods was heavily policed in the 1970's and 1980's, thanks to the military junta's extremely restrictive import laws. To this day, people who live in border areas still cross into Paraguay to purchase goods in USD and enjoy their much lower tax rates. Sure you can be stopped and busted, especially if you've got a lot of cargo with you, but most of the time, that doesn't happen, especially since there's the whole Mercosur thing going on. Indeed, many shops over there even have websites fully in Portuguese targeting Brazilian customers, they don't ship cross-border, but you can order here and then cross the border to pick it up yourself.

Haha, ouch, I'm barely in my early 30's and I'm already an aging computer geek :nutkick:, that one bruised my ego

I agree with you, though. But I also get (and deeply respect) G-man's passion, even if he's much, much more liberal than I'll ever be
