Bethesda Teases "The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remaster" for Tomorrow

Technically engine change alone should make it count as a remake instead of just remaster.
It’s an admittedly blurry line these days, but I don’t think anyone considers Nightdives KEX Engine remasters as remakes. So not necessarily. If the UE5 is just a visual wrapper and the game logic is still that of native Oblivion it would be closer to a remaster. I mean, I don’t consider Diablo 2 Resurrected a remake either, it’s just a new patch for LoD with a new layer of 3D graphics on top. The game itself is still fundamentally the same. That’s not the case with something like RE4Remake or Silent Hill 2 Remake.

Most people don't care about the differences. As long as it looks better and either plays better or at least plays the same, people are generally happy to buy a revisited title.

I thought it was modders who did this?

I am really confused. I didn't know it was actually the company. Anyways, I am looking forward to giving it a go.
There are two projects doing this. One is modders, one is an official bethesda unreal rewrite.

Absolutely loving it. 2025 looks kinda barren for this kind of games (which is pretty much the only kind of AAA games I care for), so this is an unexpected delight.

Graphics look better. I hope for AI improvements

I speculated before that this might be a Ninja Gaiden 2 Black situation where UE5 is just a visual wrapper running on top of the old game, in which case this would indeed be a remaster rather than a remake, though we’ll know for sure when it releases.
Almost has to be, frankly. Everything else would be busywork and then we'd be hearing about a lot of tweaks made to what was practically a half broken RPG progression system, for example.

Did they abandon Elder Scroll 6?
Maybe they'll collab with Valve for an Elder Scrolls X Half Life moment. I hear its going to be in VR...

I get your point.

Yeah now I really wanna know what they did with the "cells" system, because that I imagine would be a hard task to translate to a new engine.

By Azura! By Azura! By Azura!

He is sooo getting off a cliff. Again.

Hmm, they actually answered the question about engine:
around 8 min mark

So basically yeah, it's still Creation Engine underneath (I assume some of the bugs too, then xD), but the graphics are provided by UE5.
