TPU's Nostalgic Hardware Club

What I don't get is why people insist on using 4:3 and 5:4 ratio screens for retro XP builds. Widescreen LCD's were a thing in 2006 and alot of people adopted them quickly, myself included. So why do people stick with those old screen ratios?
I've paired my XP retro box exclusively with 4:3 / 5:4 CRT / LCD's, as out of the 150+ games installed, easily 4/5ths or more of them don't natively support 16:9 or 16:10 as they're 2004/5 or earlier. So while some do, I don't consider it worth either all the extra game modding for widescreen, or playing with black bars on a widescreen monitor. I have a 1920x1200 IPS LCD that can natively display 1600x1200 with perfect compatibility, but it's also limited to 60hz, all my 15-17" LCD's can do 1280x1024 @ 75hz, and well we know how CRT's work, so lower res, higher refresh for old shooter games. I also have a projector that will natively do either 1920x1080 @ 60hz for the newer games or 1280x1024 @ 85hz for that best of both worlds.

At the time (2006) I happily jumped on the bandwagon for a 1440x900 monitor and was not fussed doing widescreen fixes on the games du jour that I was actively playing, but for my retro box it's not only more fitting for the vast majority of games, it's less effort and just works. Bearing in mind the small percentage of games that support widescreen resolutions natively, also support 4:3 / 5:4 aspects and resolutions.

I never really had a problem with most on my games. But with the ones that wouldn't do widescreen, I was ok with the black bars. Was never a real issue. Different strokes...

For this box it's simply that the overwhelming majority do not support 16:9 or 16:10, it's the path of least resistance so every game can just work without needing specific hacks or fixes. It didn't feel like the right call to have such a small amount of games get widescreen and saddle all others with black bars. So it's definitely different strokes, the black bars are something I can't really stand unless it's on an OLED or large set with bias lighting to improve the perceived depth of blacks.

I am trying to get Windows 11 on a flash drive with Rufus. On a MS7817 motherboard I used GPT ,when i looked in the boot menu i could not see it?o_O Should it be MBR for my notherboard?o_OThis is what is in the flash drive below.I will give it a go with MBR .

You're using a REALLY old version of Rufus. Have you tried the newest(or one of the newest) version of Rufus?

I've never seen that particular error personally. Could be a UEFI vs Legacy boot thing.

Yes thats what it says about the flash drive the photo below. As it says in the video using an older version of Rufus fixed the problem for the person in the video. But not my T5 Samsung drive :(

It does suport UEFI.

It is a Legacy vs Uefi thing...

Start your PC and press the key to enter the boot menu.

Choose Uefi boot section from the menu and select the right drive.
If that doesnt work try from the legacy part the right drive.

At my system it looks like this:

I get that message also when i select Legacy Sandisk cruzer blade:

When you dont have that options in the boot menu, or not have a boot menu, you have to enable Uefi boot, and select the drive you want to install from as first boot drive.
If in some way you cant use UEFI boot, follow the instructions as mentioned in that screenshot. make another install media with partition scheme -->MBR & Target system--> BIOS

All the info is in that screen

You know, that could be it. Good catch!

That does not answer the Question why i get the error every time when i try and get the os on my T5 , on either Windows to go or standard with Rufus.I have done first Aid on my Mac which checks for errors it does not find any as you can see in the photo. So i don,t know why Rufus keeps on coming up with the error at the same point 12%?My VPN is switched off.The video i put on here earlier said use an older Rufus which i did do ,but still came up with the error? :( But i don,t have any problems getting it on a flash drive.

G: 512GB is your USB Flash drive?

I cannot try rufus, since i have Linux and no Windows 8(.1) or higher PC's anymore.

I made a Windows 7 USB installer with Rufus one time, but formatted it with FAT32, instead of NTFS. Maybe give that a try?

I will give that a try.it is a lot easier to do stuff on a Mac than Windows. The thing is when it is seven years old which is what mine is they drop support for it.It :( is a perfectly good computer. There is a hack you that can do up dated it but not sure a am confident enough to do that.So at a later date i might put Linux on it.And get one of the amazing M4 Mac Mini i have one of thouse loverly Thunderbot displays which i would use with the M4 mac Mini.:)

This rig by Modern Classic is indeed nostalgic for me. Back in the day I had the same motherboard, soundcard and a Ti4200-8X in my daily driver.

Hello! :)

I have discovered a strange card:

https://www.kleinanzeigen.de/s-anze...-6950-2gb-grafikkarte-gpu/3063268110-225-4708

According to the board number as well as all labels on the card and (almost all) GPU-Z information, it is a Radeon HD 6950.

GPU-Z does not explicitly show that it is an HD 6970, but according to the core config it is.

HWInfo also indicates that it is an HD 6970.

If you calculate the gigatexel/s (800 MHz x 96 TMUs = 7680), this matches the GPU-Z specification of 76.8.

The HD 6950 only has 88 TMUs, which would only result in 70.4, which is the reference value of an HD 6950.

However, 76.8 is not the reference value of the HD 6970, but 84.48.

What has gone wrong?

There were some HD 6950 that could unlock additional shaders and could run at HD 6970 clocks. They were 2GB VRAM, Dual BIOS, with reference coolers IIRC. I'm guess you have one of those MaexxDesign.

Not yet, but in a few days.
I bought the card.

Someone from another forum gave me a tip:

The statistics in the TPU post are terrific:
672 out of 696 cards (96.5%) worked without any problems.

I visited Houston, TX last week and went to the Meow Wolf Radio Tave art exhibition (Google it as it is too crazy to explain in words). I spotted a Shuttle PC and an old motherboard in one of the rooms (I apologize if the photos are a bit blurry; I had to zoom in a lot since I couldn't get close to the stuff):

Mobo is a GA-7VR most likely. I have one recapped.

Well:

- AX6BC (Phil's go-to mobo)
- an working PB OEM MSI MS-6168 (the one I got at the start of this month was dud)
- an working P5A
- any ALADDiN 5 mobo with any revision newer than Rev E that is in a working condition
- BX Master

And the list may go on, but these would be at about the top of my list.

I did check a few mainboards off for this month, about 8 working from a lot of 10. They are as following:

- MSI MS-6309
- Gigabyte GA-5AA Rev2.2
- Gigabyte GA-6BXC Rev1.7
- AOpen AX63 Pro
- ECS P6ISA-II
- Shuttle AE22V11
- ASUS K7M Rev 1.04
- ABIT VL6

Totally forgot that I bought an Audigy2 from ebay drunk a while ago. I'll pick it up tomorrow and put together a X58 Win7 setup with it. :)

Didn't the 1GB versions unlock as well?

To be honest, it has been so long that I don't remember, but I thought it was only the 2GB versions with dual BIOS & reference cooler.

Old pc + old game + coffee = :rockout:
