Just before the official launch of Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics cards, members of the Chiphell forum expressed concerns about unnamed evaluation samples exhibiting worrying memory module temperatures. Days later, Western review outlets published similar findings across several board partner specimens. Typically, pre-launch and retail units have utilized SK hynix GDDR6 VRAM modules—TechPowerUp's W1zzard uncovered numerous examples of the manufacturer's "H56G42AS8DX-014" model during teardown sessions. Curiously, Chinese PC hardware enthusiasts have happened upon Radeon RX 9070 XT cards that utilize Samsung GDDR6 memory modules. It is not clear whether Yeston has outfitted its flagship Sakura Atlantis OC SKU with Samsung components from the very beginning, but one owner documented a GPU-Z diagnostics session—late last month—showing "GDDR6 (Samsung)" onboard. Earlier this month, insiders posited that NVIDIA was in the process of changing its main GDDR7 memory vendor—from Samsung to SK hynix—for the GeForce RTX 50-series.

According to a recent Guru3D news piece, additional cases were reported. Online conjecture points to "higher end" custom models being updated with "cooler" modules. Hilbert Hagedoorn—Guru3D's head honcho—has gathered compelling information via community feedback channels: "the transition to Samsung memory has yielded noticeable thermal advantages. Early reviews and comparisons indicate that the new memory modules help lower temperatures significantly. Custom RX 9070 XT models running demanding benchmarks like Furmark have demonstrated memory temperatures of 75°C or lower without necessitating an increase in voltage or a reduction in clock speeds. Notable manufacturers, including Sapphire, XFX, and GIGABYTE, have already integrated Samsung's GDDR6 into their custom variants. However, as of now, AMD has not authorized its partners to explicitly differentiate between models with SK hynix and Samsung memory, likely to avoid confusion among consumers and maintain a consistent product lineup." Additionally, TechPowerUp forum members have found Samsung GDDR6 memory on Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 custom models. Thanks for the tip, Fluffmeister.

Amusingly, one member of the Chiphell discussion board experimented with a rare MBA Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics card. They went to great length (and expense) to reduce memory module temperatures on AMD's "reference design." Commentators quickly advised that these efforts and expenditures were wasted, due to the candidate unit being outfitted with non-SK hynix products. One reply stated: "Samsung's video memory is not hot, so there is no need to change it." Hopefully, TechPowerUp's resident graphics card expert will get hands-on time with an "updated" Radeon RX 9070 XT sample.

Do we know if the samsung models run cooler or have the sensor in another location?

That is the $64,000 question, mine definitely reports lower temps compared to people with SK hynix VRAM. I'm sure Wizz will get hold of one to review soon enough.

I wonder why so many people are worried about the Hynix modules, they're running well within their spec and it's not like they are drastically heating up the GPU core. My modules run at about 88C while being overclocked, and my GPU doesn't make it past low 60s. It's not exactly cool in my house either, about 80F. Now if the Samsung modules overclock drastically better... that I might want to swap a card for.

I'm looking at GPU-Z on my PC and I'm left wondering how on earth can the 9070XT be "that much" faster than my 6800XT :kookoo:
The important numbers are all the same

Exactly my thoughts.

Besides, we know that Samsung modules report lower temps, but we don't know why. It might only be something as trivial as a different sensor placement.

How far can you overclock your VRAM?

Not even bothered trying, I think the last time I overclocked anything was over 10 years ago.

Any point?

Apart from me being curious how it affects actual gaming performance, none.

I doubt it's any different from W1zz review of the Nitro+, I literally can't be bothered for a few extra FPS.

It's within the specs, and not that hot if You look at what on review samples where :).
1745473849942.png

I would be worried if My vram temps exceeds 90C all the time, but that's for me, different people have different standards, but I would like to have everything in My pc under 70C, but with todays pc hardware it is not possible anymore without compromises :). (Only 1078 days to go before the warranty is off, and I can go deshroud route :D )

For you? No.

For others - yes. While Samsung may run cooler at same speeds (and voltage?) it's OC potential may be worse.
We wont know unless someone tries.

No.

1. Your VBIOS is set up for a 108 ˚C cutoff temp.
2. The only data regarding max operating temperature is supplied by Micron who specify 95 ˚C. And that's case temp (at the edge of the chip). Your card measures hotspot temp (at the hottest point of the chip).

i think you forgot about architecture uplift, also why your 6800xt runs at pcie 4.0 x8
I have no idea why it won't go to 16x... Either my PCIE socket is damaged or it's the card itself. It's running fine and not having any issues with stuttering whatsoever (because of the smaller bandwith) so I'm fine with it till I buy a new card. It seemed to work fine on my 5600X tho and it doesn't work fine since I changed to a 5800X3D... And I reseated the CPU and GPU multiple times so that's not it either. Maybe my PCI-E 4.0 NVMe is taking up the lanes? Too many variables to look at for nothing basically.

It's in the title, "PC enthusiasts"? We pay attention to the details, and like to tinker with our stuff, and that's beyond the scope of interest of the majority, or should I say typical consumers that just don't care.
