Microsoft Increases Xbox Console and Peripheral Pricing Across the Globe

The problem for game development is they focus on the wrong things. They pay third party companies for services really not needed etc. Yet we look at the success of the games that have gotten GOTY the last few years and see that these massive companies that say the cost are way to high are getting their lunch eaten by much smaller companies.

Look at the games that have had great success the last few years. I mean Ubisoft has like 19,000 employees. Square-Enix is like 5000. Now look at the studios making the highest rated games as of late, Larian Studios that made Baldur's Gate 3 is under 500 employees. Astro Bot is from a studio that has 65 employees. Split Fiction had a team of 80 and are the same team that had GOTY It Takes Two. Even Elden Ring that won GOTY in 2022 had a team between 400-500. The teams that made Skyrim and Fallout 3 for Bethesda where like 100 people. Team sizes and studio sizes are getting out of control. Most of these games didn't even sell at full retail price. Astro Bot $60. Baldur's Gate 3 was $70 but released at $60 on PC. Split Fiction $50, Elden Ring $60.

Then this last week Expedition 33 with a team under 30 releases what very well be the GOTY for 2025 and they release it with a price of $50 and even offer a discount on PS5 and PC Digital making it $45. It shows that you don't have to be huge to make a great game. Don't have to spend a decade to make a game. Shows you don't have to have a massive budget. This game still was created using Unreal Engine 5. It is a modern game. It is one of the greatest games I have ever played. Square-Enix said Turn Based was dead. The team behind Expedition 33 was largely ex Ubisoft employees. Goes to show talent is wasted and not put to use at large studios and when given room to breathe some of these talented people can make amazing games.

A the fun part is your paying more for soon to be obsolescent hardware. The refresh to the consoles is about 18 months or so away. Plus the hardware in the current gen is anemic at best.

But this price gouging worries me for the future. Are next-gen consoles going to be hitting $1000? With their games costing $120 each?

Well if you don't follow this stuff and don't know better and its what your kids want for Christmas.........................

But ya, eventually it will get to a point where sales will drop off.
