The TPU UK Clubhouse

I'm confuddled with amusement, as a Scotsman, listening to a Hungarian giving English lessons to an American.

In the UK clubhouse......
English? I thought it was about Swedish.

Anyhow, this Hungarian lives in England and has a bachelor's degree in English language and literature. It would be quite shameful not to be able to add to such topics.

In the US we say: eye-kee-yuh. No idea what the proper way to say it is.
Ee-keh-ah. :)

That's right (I learned a bit of Swedish at uni).

English is the only language that pronounces "i" as "ai". It boggles my mind when English people assume that it's standard across the world.
i is pronounced eye, and ai is pronounced Ay

i is pronounced eye, and ai is pronounced Ay
Let's not start on the phonetic alphabet, that would overcomplicate things for the purpose of a casual conversation. :)

another reason I miss England, the video is a meme, but the British babe actually does sound amazing to my ears

any British ladies that read this, I will marry you just for your accent, I will cook and clean too, I'm the whole package
You might want to delete a couple of your posts from the previous page where you were talking about cooking before a "babe" steps in as they certainly didn't leave me with the view that you were an astute cook

Dating apps? Who needs the turmoil, Techpowerup dating requests, now that is where its at!

Everybody knows there are no girls on the interwebs ;)

When I lived with my lady friend in England, I cooked for her and she cooked for me, we just would like pop frozen fish in the oven, etc. Very simple stuff like that. I actually cook at home 24/7, just never from scratch or recipe cooking, just quick and easy meals, but I mean if you do it right it still tastes good imo
I'm not sure if I'd call popping frozen fish into the oven "cooking". Just like I'm not sure if I'd call plugging a pre-built computer into the mains "computer building". No offense. :ohwell:

Like I said, we all have different hobbies, and that's what makes the world go around. :)

I would say some ladies just won't go for that, true, but my lady friend I had in England for awhile was the same way, and quite frankly I think a lot of people in their 30's are exactly like me, and the girls who do want from scratch meals, well they are out of my league anyway, so meh its a moot point
I think it's more like a regional thing than an age thing. The UK (and I assume the US, too) is abundant with pre-made dishes and fast food takeaways, which are great for busy weekdays, or for people who generally have more money than time, or just aren't interested in cooking. This trend is slowly spreading into other parts of the world, but it definitely wasn't like that in Eastern Europe a mere 10 years ago, not to mention when I grew up. Over there, cooking is an essential life skill, just like paying taxes, or I don't know... breathing... as back in the days you would only get basic ingredients in shops, like raw meat, vegetables, pasta, etc. It's not like any Hungarian is expecting others to be Michelin star chefs, but not knowing how to make basic dishes is kind of frowned upon over there. Not that I'd do that after having lived 9 years in the UK. :)

Edit: With that said, I seriously think you can make infinitely better meals from scratch if you're inclined to learn. If you're not, that's fine of course. :)

Dating on a forum occupied 99.8% by men? Good luck!

Delete bomb dropped.

TPU isn't a dating site, and the UK clubhouse is for UK discussion and associated topics.

Get back to the UK content, please.

Just as I read this I heard a guy sneezing his ass off as he walked past my house. He's half way down the road and I can still hear him sneezing

If he is sneezing he is still alive, quite a thing when walking the streets of London town :D

How is PlusNet?

The only person within my parameter that sneezes loud..is myself. That is also when i'm out and about most of the time lol.
I only catch other people sneezing when its the cold season.

So far so good. But I've been with them twice in the past before and theyve always been decent. Occasionally they'll have random outages at about 12-2am that can last anywhere between 2mins to a few hours but im usually in bed or about to get into bed by that time anyway. I dont know if we're going to suffer those outages this time around as we're full fibre optic now instead of running through the telephone line.

Had to dig out a longer Cat 5E cable to put their router in the place we wanted it to be in but its all good. 30m of 5E to the little modem on the wall and no loss of speed so far.

Good question, I haven't looked at hardware prices recently.

When I try to sell something, I tend to look at new prices of equivalent hardware, and ask about 60-70% of that if it's in mint condition, or a bit less if it's not. Or look at the buying and selling prices at CeX, and ask somewhere in between.

That makes two of us:toast:

Good advice that's exactly how I've done things in the past. These days I'm so busy with earning money I have no time to spend it :banghead:

I looked at ebay and cex. Chip at cex is 94, lowest ebay 168, so between the two i guess. cex don't do boards, but lowest ebay is 208. i reckon 50 for my good ram. i'm gonna sell them for 275 together i reckon, cracking setup for that price imo

I was going to say around 200-300 tops as a whole bundle. People will try to low ball you of course.

I'm gonna say 275 to my mate. The board and cpu were 700 when i bought them.

I'm sure there are some fitters who could do it, but they may be under time constraints, or they're being lazy.

This was actually pretty much a case. According to the actual BT engineer who turned up yesterday. The guy who turned up first was a contractor who BT outsources work to when their own engineers are swamped with jobs.

His take on it was the contractor turned up. Thought it would take too much effort and immediately told us to reschedule without even attempting to do anything. He wanted the easiest and quickest job that required the least amount of effort on his part so he could get paid for the job he picked up.

Because the contractor rescheduled the job a proper BT engineer was sent out to us but apparently his job was more to deal with emergencies i.e your internet going down rather than broadband installations.

He didnt understand why the contactor didnt even do the small modem install inside the house which was like the simplest thing to do. We already had a hole in the wall from a deleted satellite dish so part of his job was already done for him. Had he done that. It could have saved all of them a lot of time

So much for my plans of keeping my Fiesta ST forever... it got stolen from my workplace's car park last night.

The thieves came with a car, tried to break into and start another one (but failed, so they just ripped the dash out instead), then went onto mine, where they tried to get in and get my steering lock off for about 20 minutes before driving off. They were recorded on CCTV, but not a soul saw a thing, obviously.

I have full insurance, so that's not a problem, but what do you guys think... is there any chance I could sue my employer for negligence of providing adequate safety and security in the (monitored) car park? Since this isn't the first case, the last one happened about a month ago.

That sucks. I doubt your work can be held accountable unless they explicitly state the car park is safe. CCTV is pretty useless in most cases, especially if it records on low res.

I'm surprised they went after your car - I thought thieves stole to order these days and went for more luxury marks. I know the ST is a great little model, but it's a strange move. Maybe stolen for other criminal actions?

I despise thieves. Hope they all die.
