Bit wary of how good a monitor or especially gaming monitor this would make. Seems a bit past the sweet spot in consumer applications to expect anything but wow factor at the size.

Anyone out there have some insights that would correct this assumption. In practice more than theory based on panel and theoretical performance.
@Dr. Dro ??

My experience with LG OLED TVs would suggest you would be totally awed, amazed and enthralled viewing videos, TV and movies that were recorded with the maximum resolutions available.

But for gaming? Maybe if you were sitting across a large room from the screen. Otherwise, you will wear your neck out swinging it back and forth, up and down and still will miss much of the action.

So IMO, no. It would not make a good gaming monitor just because of its size.

Mine is the 55, but it's been nothing but pure bliss. There is no input lag, 5750 hours strong with zero image retention, colors are amazing, G-sync works well, I have no complaints really.

Regardless, if you found a deal on the 2023 model, I would avoid the 83 inch model as it does not have the MLA treatment, bringing it much closer to the C series while retaining the very high price. The key difference between the C3 and G3 is the much higher quality panel with the MLA thing, and the largest size misses out on that. If you can find a C4 or C5 at the same size, I would point you towards that instead.

So IMO, no. It would not make a good gaming monitor just because of its size.

That's quite relative, though. I personally could go for the 65, but no budget for that

At 83, it's probably couch gaming only.

I've used a 65 G2 as a monitor and it was fine I could probably do 77 but 83 would be rough unless sitting pretty far back.

As others have said the tandem G5 is superior and the G3/G4 both have MLA but not at every size I'd stick with MLA varient at a min if buying in 2025. LG burn in mitigation are pretty damn good but I'd still only lean towards oled if media consumption/gaming was the primary use case.

Currently using a G8 UW and a mini led monitor as my secondary for web browsing static content which I feel is the ideal setup when using and oled.

I bought the C4 last week. Truly amazing. Just puts any IPS to shame and it's bright. I lower it to 60% so my eyes don't burn out.

I think the MLA tech is only G4 and it's removed in the 5 series. Apparently 5 has some weird issues. Maybe firmware update will fix it. But why but the 5 and when 4 is 50% off MSRP.

MLA was introduced with the G2 I believe, and is exclusive to the G series. G3 has it on sizes 55 through 77. 83 doesn't have it. LG refuses to upgrade the C series with it, and they also haven't implemented the alpha 11 SoC on anything below the G4. G3 has the same SoC from the C3, and is slower than the newer models. It's very bright, I use it at 0% OLED brightness myself, perhaps why my TV has no image retention.

4 Evo is not as good as 3 non-Evo. 5 are a hard pass for reasons you stated.

Obviously there aren't many of these 83" floating around out there that would make research simple. Flagship products are such a small market they usually are either bettered in reality by something lower down or escape to the next level beyond marketing terms a lot of effort was devoted towards instilling. MLA etc. in this case.

I would still do a MLA 77 inch model over a non MLA 83 inch model unless the 83 inch variant was much cheaper.

50% off MSRP
Ah, my 3 favorite words in the English language, at least when shopping anyways, assuming the "MSRP" is actually that and not some marked-up-80%-then-marked-down BS, like there is with a certain product category nowadays :D

I saw a few B4/C4 half off. They were store demo units.

1980's CRT demo > 2025 OLED demo

I do highly recommend LG OLEDs, a 77" G3 has been my daily driver since May 2023. I had a 65" CX before this and a 55" B6 before that. The B6 had no evidence of burn in after 5 years and I gave it away to my parents, they still use it daily. I've been daily driving large OLEDs for almost ten years now. It's difficult to go back to anything else at this point.

The 77" G3 is in my "office" which is a loft above a work shop where I run a small business. It's on a very long articulating wall-mounted arm, I think about 4.5 ft long fully extended. It stows flat against the wall if I need extra space up there.

Usually, the display faces to the right where I sit in an office chair about 6 ft from it with a work bench I call my desk in front of me. I do have a PG27UCDM as a secondary display on a monitor arm on the side of the work bench.

If I need to entertain, take a long phone call or I'm slacking off, the display pivots to the left which faces a sectional, small coffee table & La-Z-Boy. The recliner is maybe 8ft from the display, a little further than my desk. I game from both seats, no problem. If anything I prefer being 6ft away as it fills most of my vision and gives good immersion. The sectional is about 12-15ft away and the 77" still shines even from there, if my son comes to work with me he prefers sitting back there to game while I work.

It's a pretty versatile setup.

I would strongly recommend avoiding the 83" as there is no MLA, though!! I'd also be wary of trading 10%+ of my pixel density for 6" diagonal. 57.2ppi at 77" is going to be about the lowest I'd want to go when sitting so close. I believe the 83 is 52ppi?

If you proceed with LG OLED beware of grey banding. You can't avoid grey banding completely on LG WOLED imho, so if you're sensitive to it you may want to forget about this altogether. Consuming content you may never notice it but I promise that even with best case panel lottery Windows 11 will still find the shades of grey that makes you notice it at least once in a while. If you get a panel with noticeable grey banding out of the box it may go away after break-in of 5ish hours... if it sticks around past 8 hours and a pixel refresh, RETURN IT. I've seen some particularly bad examples out in the wild, don't try to live with it just exchange it while you can.

Invest in a cheap X-rite meter & CalMan Home for LG Display software from Portrait Displays. It takes a couple hours to calibrate all the modes using AutoCal feature but it's easy and well worth it. Almost night and day difference in certain use cases.

Well when the TV is normally 3k for an entire year and suddenly $1500 because they are dumping old stock, I would consider that 50% off :). Now the C5 is 3k for the 77". The cycle continues like this every year for TVs. Any left in stock by memorial Day, it's bargain bin prices.

As an LG G4 owner, I agree with those who said to aim for one with the MLA layer if you can. It's really good!

For the size, it really depends of your environment and your personal preferences. If you have a really big room, it could be very cool, but if you are like me and enjoy sitting closer to the display, 83 might be too big. I have 65" since 2017 and I still get amazed by the size once upon a time. I sit at 7' of it tho, which is kind of close. A couple of friends also have a 65", but they sit at arround 10' and the display feel smaller. Like if they had a 55" compared to my setup.

83 G3 MSRP was 6499 I believe. Extremely costly TV.

One I always wanted to try is the Sony Z1D, at 100 inches. It was the king of LCD TVs until OLEDs dominated the high end. Unfortunately not something you'll find at the flea market, even 9 years on.

Relatively so. Most enthusiast purchases of this size and above fall into custom installed hand assembled screens closer to 100K (excepting projectors). This is the where the quality exists.

OLED and 83" could still be fun here if game HDR and a few other qualities somehow made their way in. Like most here a rather high level of doubts exist that is the case.

Folks keep saying its relative. Well, of course its relative as it depends on so many variables, many of which are unique to each individual and viewing environment.

So as I said above, "IMO", in other words, for "me" an 83 inch TV/monitor would not be any good. Why? Because I don't use a wireless (or even wired) game controller that allows me to sit 8 - 10 feet away from the screen. I use my keyboard and mouse which, even though wireless, sit on my keyboard tray, a fixed part of my computer desk, where my normal size monitors sit.

Sitting in my computer chair at my keyboard, my monitors sit just at the tip of my fingers. Perfect - for "me".

In terms of viewing the "field of play", if you do the math, factor the ratios, carry the 1, how is me sitting at arms length from my standard size monitors any different from sitting 8 - 10 feet away from a monster-size TV?

Why did Mr. Smith get rid of his 55" TV and buy a 75" TV? Because his neighbor, Mr. Jones, just bought a 65".

What's wrong with just enjoying the game? Too many get so caught up in the technical specs, they lose site of the objective - to be entertained.

We see this all the time here in the forums when someone is worried something is wrong because he's only getting 210 FPS while his buddy is getting 215 FPS. :kookoo:

Watching the 4K version of the Lord of Rings trilogy on a big OLED TV, supported by nice audiophile quality surround sound system is totally amazing and engrossing. But so is simply sitting down and reading the books, in JRR Tolkien's own words.

A great classic movie is just as entertaining in black and white (if you relax and allow yourself to be entertained) as it is in color.
