There are three types, traditional cartridges, cartridges that actives a downloaded game and downloaded games.Bit expensive, if they get a couple of nice first party titles I might get one in a couple of years.
Maybe used, if the games work used. If they don’t nope.
This is a handy site for this stuff.Games for the Switch were $60 in 2017.That's $79 in today's money. https://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl?cost1=60&year1=201703&year2=202505
Similarly the launch price of the Switch is $396 in today's money. So there's a $54 premium for a bigger and better screen, a better kick stand, and a better joycon latch. (Better hardware too but theoretically that's from advances in technology.) The Switch OLED launch price is $407 in today's money.
Also the GameCube was $200 and the Wii $250 according to an AI. And my memory says those games were $40 and $50. So if we ignore inflation isn't the original Switch outrageously expensive?
Nice. Relevant notes to what I see there: at launch the white Wii U was $300 and the price shown ($350) was for the black one with more storage. The Xbox 360 and PS3 also launched in 2 flavors each, both more expensive than the base model listed. This is a handy site for this stuff.

What do you mean the “first decent Nintendo in ages” ? the first switch is awesome cheap console (as low as free with certain phone plans) cheap games (bought many of them at $20 each) and you get to play all those exclusive games .I love the salt in this thread, everyone here hating / expecting Switch sales to crash hard... nope
I did buy a Switch 2 as the hardware is pretty good for the price, the first decent Nintendo console in ages, and for the games, that you will not find anywhere
I had a Wii U and OG SwitchWhat do you mean the “first decent Nintendo in ages” ? the first switch is awesome cheap console (as low as free with certain phone plans) cheap games (bought many of them at $20 each) and you get to play all those exclusive games .
That’s what made the switch such a great console. This new one while I understand is better it starts competing with other consoles and it’s too pricey for what it offers. No kid playing Mario is gonna care about 120fps
The OG was never meant to be a spec sheet. It wasn’t when it came out . The Tegra chip was somewhat outdated back then. I don’t mind Nintendo releasing a powerful version I just wish they would also release a more budget friendly version. They can’t please everyone and I get that.I had a Wii U and OG Switch
the OG Switch hw is pathetic, basically portable Wii U which is barely an upgrade over the Wii which was also a very small upgrade over the Game Cube
all Switch games are 100% wasted on the system, playing BOTW and TOTK at 30 fps with constant drops to 15-20 is unplayable in my book. So much so that even owning Switch and the actual games, I still preferred to emulate on PC for decent resolution and 60 fps
the S2 fixes that, it has nothing to do with 120fps mkart, but instead being able to play the games I mentioned and similar at 1440/4k and 60fps. It's FINALLY having HDR support as well.
the reason the S2 is 10x stronger is precisely because OG Switch was just terrible
kids are not the only public for the Switch, there are millions of adult players on it
first of all, see inflation, the current Switch is not expensive, your money is worth lessThe OG was never meant to be a spec sheet. It wasn’t when it came out . The Tegra chip was somewhat outdated back then. I don’t mind Nintendo releasing a powerful version I just wish they would also release a more budget friendly version. They can’t please everyone and I get that.
The funny thing is .. all those who bought an S2 are in for a surprise when next year Nintendo pushes out an oled version with many shortcomings fixed including the obv screen upgrade
First off comparing inflation it’s not the same as purchasing power . Folks love to use inflation like it’s a benchmark for what people can afford . It’s not. It’s a meaningless figure unless you’re also looking at cost of living or at least your paycheck. Did it go up 2x since the OG release ? No? Okay well then it’s more expensive to you . Or it could be a lot cheaper to you .first of all, see inflation, the current Switch is not expensive, your money is worth less
second of all, the current LCD screen is great, and as I said above, will actually last the console's life. Nintendo will surely release an OLED version with better battery, but no way in hell that's being launched in 2026. More like 2030. And for the people that use the console in docked way - like me - that matters 0%.
and finally, the OG Switch could have been 2x stronger at marginally more cost, Nintendo just went with the baaaaaaaaare minimum. It is a piece of shit of a console hw wise, for the time it was release, and even worse as time went on.

inflation means that 450 USD today is the same as 360 USD in 2017, when the OG Switch was released at 350 (in practice the same price) - your purchasing power has nothing to do with it, that's your problem. Nintendo and any other company need to buy components to assemble the console, everything is more expensive due to inflation, so obviously the final price will be higher.First off comparing inflation it’s not the same as purchasing power . Second the oled I believe came in 2 years later so sure 2027.
Finally the OG is fine for most looking to play those exclusive . Like I said it was never meant to be a spec sheet and it was priced appropriately

I'm a PC gamer, have a very nice rig, used to emulate everything Nintendo, I also despise Nintendo as a company for being anti consumer, so I ain't stupid ok
I did buy a Switch 2 as the hardware is pretty good for the price, the first decent Nintendo console in ages, and for the games, that you will not find anywhere else. Content.
- oh the drift: bloody wait and see if it will actually happen first, as of now both joycons and pro controller 2 sticks ARE THE BEST analog sticks I've ever used
- expensive games: first party, yes they are, but they are also excellent, they are the reason people buy the console. If you wait you can grab them at ~25% discount during sales. Now 3rd party games are dirt cheap, cheaper than on Steam in many occasions, massive sales. I've been rebuying some games I have on Steam for the Switch (for portability and for my kid to play) for like ~5 USD each.
- not OLED: the screen is great (except for scratches, get a glass protector), and OLED degrades with time. In 10 years this LCD will be looking exactly the same, while an OLED Switch would have burn ins and degraded colors.
- cost: see inflation
it's pretty simple - if you enjoy Nintendo games and don't want to wait 5 years for perhaps them being emulated, the S2 is a great piece of hw that will allow you to play that at release.
if you don't enjoy Nintendo games, go buy anything else running SteamOS / Windows and stop hating on people that do, be happy
Welcome to 2025! The party started a while ago.TheF is wrong with people. $500 for this twice as much as the previous version and now with $80 games
Yuzu / Sudachi had a massive head start as Yuzu devs got access to a Nintendo dev kit for the OG Switch... and even with that, it took 4-5 years (after Switch's launch) for they to be decent. Also, I don't have to wait 5 years to emulate, more like 1-2 at max before someone adapts Eden or Sudachi.
Well whatever makes you justify your brand new purchase. The OG switch is still a great value and plays well all the iconic games at a fraction of the new s2 priceinflation means that 450 USD today is the same as 360 USD in 2017, when the OG Switch was released at 350 (in practice the same price) - your purchasing power has nothing to do with it, that's your problem. Come on mate, use Google. The OLED Switch was released in 2021, 4 years after the Switch 1 release.
It was never fine, playing games at 15 fps hasn't been fine for over 2 decades, people put up with it because for most of them they didnt have a choice. People that knew how to emulate did.

Anti consumer in a consumer facing business line, you really need a big dose of Gen Z mind-twists to get there imho.I love how everyone is like Nintendo is anti-consumer! It is not like Nintendo is anymore anti-consumer than Microsoft or Sony. There is really no difference between all three.

Just fyi, cause a lot of people are just jumping on the bandwagon, there are a LOT of switch 1 games that are cheaper than they are on steam. The same applies to switch 2 although with its limited library its hard to make comparisons. To that I have but one retort
Arr!
Anti consumer in a consumer facing business line, you really need a big dose of Gen Z mind-twists to get there imho.
What people are really saying is: I hate this company for doing what it does but I'm still buying in, actually, because I do whine but I really have no principles or willpower whatsoever.
The use of the term signifies the weak. If its anti consumer, don't buy and move on. But if you still get the free EGS games while calling them anti consumer... yeah. Lol. GL making your point in a consumer market then.
The bottom line is, we can talk about commerce for ages, but 90% is just us lying to each other. Us being a bigger world than what's on TPU of course, I'm sure we're dealing with a top 10% of people with some sliver of sense here.

Now if you are not a fan of zelda, mario, dk and metroid prime or all of those turn based asian rpgs i guess switch 2 aint for you, but i promise you are missing out. They have some incredible games that are absolutely timeless.
