Today, 2K and Gearbox Software announced that Borderlands 4 is now available for pre-order. The next installment in the critically and commercially-successful franchise that started a new genre of games will launch worldwide on September 12, 2025 via PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. It will also be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 later in 2025.

"I've been blown away by how high the team at Gearbox have raised the bar for Borderlands 4," said David Ismailer, President of 2K. "The development team crafted a premium AAA adventure that evolves the series' gameplay and storytelling in new ways, while delivering on the quintessential Borderlands looter-shooter experience fans know and love."

"Borderlands 4 is the most excited the team and I have ever been to launch a Borderlands game," said Gearbox founder and President Randy Pitchford. "Borderlands 4 is the best entry point for new players while also being a heartfelt love letter to fans of the original games."

Players will take up the mantle of one of four new Vault Hunters, each with unique abilities that, combined with literally billions of weapons, introduce even more ways to crush, bash and destroy enemies. With the biggest Borderlands world ever, brand new traversal mechanics help them explore the sprawling planet Kairos to face off against the tyrannical Timekeeper and his Order.

Additionally, players can look forward to a robust roadmap of free and paid post-launch content rolling out following the launch of Borderlands 4 so they can continue their adventures on Kairos. Depending on which content pack they own, paid DLC can include two new Vault Hunters, all-new regions of Kairos, new story missions, side missions, challenges, enemies and more. Full details will be revealed at a later date.

Borderlands 4 offers three editions of the game: Standard Edition, Deluxe Edition, and Super Deluxe Edition.

All editions are available for pre-order today and will release worldwide on September 12, 2025. Players who pre-order one of these editions will receive the Gilded Glory Pack, which includes one Vault Hunter Skin, one Weapon Skin, and an ECHO-4 Drone Skin.

  • The Standard Edition includes the base game and will be available for $69.99 on PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
  • The Deluxe Edition will feature a variety of bonus items and will be available for $99.99 on PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
  • This edition includes the Bounty Pack Bundle, featuring four separate post-launch DLC packs, each with distinct areas, new missions, and unique bosses; four Vault Cards with unique challenges and rewards; new gear and weapons; four new vehicles, and Vault Hunter cosmetics; and the Firehawk's Fury Weapon Skin.
  • The Super Deluxe Edition will include all bonus digital content from the Deluxe Edition and will be available for $129.99 on PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
  • This edition also includes the Vault Hunter Pack, featuring two new Story Packs, each featuring a new Vault Hunter, story, and side missions; two new map regions; new gear and weapons; more Vault Hunter cosmetics; and new ECHO-4 cosmetics.
  • Additionally, it offers the Ornate Order Pack with four Vault Hunter Skins, four Vault Hunter Heads and four Vault Hunter Bodies.
Borderlands 4 is rated M for Mature by the ESRB. Additionally, once purchased on Steam or Epic Games Store, the game will also be available to play on NVIDIA GeForce NOW.

I couldn't finish Borderlands 3, there's something about these games it doesn't click for me. I'll wait and see about this one.

DONT pre-order.

Wait for independent reviews to come in before you buy. Neither Ismailer or Pitchford are trustworthy sources as they work for 2k and its their job to hype the game for their financial benefit no matter how bad it is.

it's best as a coop tbh

I'll wait until they go back to the original Mad Max in Alien Ruins aspect instead of the current... I don't even know what the fuck this style is?

Vault Hunter design by crowdsourcing... this doesn't bode well.

Really enjoyed BL1-2-TPS.

Gameplay was the only thing BL3 had going for it. Change the audio language to French or something, your head-story will be better (probably more funneh too).

  • The Super Deluxe Edition will include all bonus digital content from the Deluxe Edition and will be available for $129.99 on PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Come on, dude.

An extra $30 to preorder the DLC + a couple skins? Fine, whatever, that's how games are done now. I guess it's at least fair to give a choice between paying less up front or getting the DLC on their own later on.

An extra $30 ON TOP OF THAT for 1/3 of the core gameplay experience at launch? Nah, fuck that.

As always, wait for the GOTY edition with all the DLC and a nice 50% discount, and by then you'll know if you actually want it.
Better yet, wait until EGS gives it away for free.

BL3 objectively in 2025 is by far the most polished, whether you like the story or not. Having said that BL2 is a classic not to be missed. The biggest issue with BL4 will be predatory pricing for all the extra content, at this point they have the formula for gameplay, its just a matter of pushing out a new itteration with better graphics.

$70 for the base game? No thanks, hard pass.

I really didn't like the prequal game and BL3 wasn't any good. I liked BL2, except for Tiny Tina (wish I could just blast her to bits and never have to hear her cringe humor and wannabe gangster slang spew from her mouth).

Unfortunately, the story is kinda a big part of these games....

You can have the best gameplay int he universe but if your story is cringy garbage, its going to be hard to enjoy.

For me it's the "millennial writing" these games employ. Base cynicism and reddit tier "get it" jokes. BL2 was only good because handsome jack is that good of a villain, without him that game would have been so grating I never would have gotten more than an hour into it.

Given how predatory their data collection is, this is the only correct answer. Dont pay for this.

To be fair the core fanbase doesn't necessarily play these games for their stories mainly, sure it does matter some when its your first playthrough but after that you skip it anyway in case you are playing another char.
End gam and the overall gameplay like the build variety/guns/farming/raids is where its at and if they get that done right then there will be enough players buying and playing it.
There are still ppl streaming and playing BL 2 for example with all kind of crazy challenge runs/mods and whatever else you have, BL 3 is also in a good shape now if you want to mess around with end game builds and whatnot.
Luckily it looks like that they did learn from some of their early BL 3 mistakes like the lack of dedicated loot farming and other Quality of life changes. 'Well ofc 4 will have its own problems I bet but at least its something..'

Price is high for sure but if you plan to play this long term then it kinda pays for itself in entertainment value which I do plan to do if possible. 'I have over 1100 hours in BL 3 so I would say that I've got my money's worth even tho I did pay full price for each DLC and the main game'
Randy is yeah whatever I just try to ignore that guy in general, kinda funny that one if not the most known BL 2 streamer/content creator had to cancel a co-op stream with him recently cause his fanbase did not want that to happen.

If the story is so cringe and/or horrible/forgettable that you dont finish your first playthrough, your "core fanbase" isnt going to go back and replay the game. The fact that BL2 still sees interest from streamers while BL3 is hardly an echo in the archives says a lot. The same applies to TPS and TTW, both of which had the same, or better, gunplay than BL2 but neither saw anywhere near the same success.

That said BL 2 streamer did not leave BL 3 cause of the story either, its cause BL 2 offers certain gameplay elements that BL 3 does not or at least to a less extent and hes apparently a fan of those. 'Skip/speed run farming for example like BL2 has more potential map exploits that he finds fun'

I've had a co-op rerun of BL 3 with a friend of mine not long ago who also played the serie since BL 1 and after we finished the game I've asked him what he thinks of it and he was fine with it but also really liked the gameplay itself. 'We did start the DLCs too since it was his first time playing the game'

TPS and TTW were more like side games with much less content in overall so that makes sense. 'TTW's end game is just not there,I've also droped that game faster than any other in the serie thanks to that 1 reason. Its much better with the Redux mod tho'

BL 3's story and writing is a side product of the years when it was under development, thats when Twitch started being popular so the idea of the annoying Calypso twins pretty much came from there cause well some streamers do have like a cult following much like them.
BL 4's story is supposedly returning to a different tone according to GBX but that we will see. 'Not that it matters to me, while I'm not a fan of BL 3's story its also not a deal breaker for me'

There is a lot of new if not all new negative reviews on Borderlands because of new draconian EULA. This 4th one will also get lots of negative reviews because of it and the sales will decline significantly .

Cool. The market is still much more interested in 2 than 3. Says a lot.

I went to Outback Steakhouse with my friends and we had steak. I asked them what they thought, and they said it was really good. We thought about getting ice cream afterwards.

This is cope. TPS was a full fledged prequel. It's content was comparable to the first Borderlands. The fact it was nowhere near as popular speaks directly to the problems this franchise is having.

Are you....trying to quote someone? You should be using the ", not the ' sign. Also would help if you linked what you were quoting, since a quote from some random source that nobody knows about interjected into a comment makes little to no sense. Watch:

'I like cheeseburgers'

See? Even better, you can put "QUOTE" in square brackets to create an actual quote

You're right, BL3's story is a product of its time, that is, rapidly declining quality of writing across the board. Bl2, TPS, TTW, have all had bad writing and millennial tropes, the savior of BL2 was Handsome jack. Take Pitchford's claims of a "different tone" with an entire truckload of salt.

I can mostly ignore the writing, but my primary problem with BL3 is is how slow it is. BL3 doesn't get fun until you complete the campaign, and the campaign takes forever. It landed on gamepass recently and I thought I'd try to get some friends into it before I remembered that for the first 30 hours all the guns are bad and you don't have enough skill points to have a meaningful character build.

The way I use ' and ' is basically an extra thought of mine that feels more like somewhat offtopic-ish to me so I put it between ' ' and make it italic so they are not quotes but my own thoughts.
Been doing that for many years and so far no one had any issue understanding that so sorry but I aint gonna change it now.:)
If I actually quote someone then it is quoted so you can see the difference.

Both TPS and TTW was an outsourced project btw, it wasn't the main team's work as far as I know.

Either way there is no point in making more points cause we will never agree, the entire BL serie was always a niche to begin with but at least BL 1 did spawn the looter shooter genre pretty much or at least made it known.
To me its still as fun as ever and as long as they stick to their usual formula then I will have my fun same as my BL friends from the previous games.:)

@MrDweezil
That is kind of true but imo that goes for most games in the ARPG and Looter Shooter genre, low level characters are just meh to play and the real fun begins once you are in the end game or at least thats how it always felt to me in such games.

Don't be an idiot! NEVER PRE-ORDER!!!

After the changes to the EULA, etc. I removed it from my steam wishlist.

The original goty/original goty enhanced are still my steam wish list.

And best played co-op with buddies.

I pre-ordered Borderland 3, and that is the last time I pre-ordered anything ever. It doesn't matter how big the world is, if the story sucked, I won't be playing, the antagonist is piss poor. They set the bar very high with Handsome Jack as antagonist, but it falls flat with BL3. Only play the story once with much difficulty, uninstall and never bother to replay it ever again.
