Nintendo Launches the Switch 2

I wish Nintendo would release really colorful games for the NS2, like it always did, and not games with washed out colors like the new Mario Kart game. They could keep their style of brightly colored games with high resolution. There are already thousands of games with washed-out colors on Sony and MS consoles.

you are probably used to over saturated colors, on my calibrated TV it looks fine, and similar to the LCD screen itself showing the default cal isn't terrible

you can always crank your TV to a vivid profile as well...

releasing an emulator, and it being actually decent / playable are two very different things

Yuzu was released around a year later after the Switch launch, but it took a good 5 years for it to become something actually usable. Same thing for CEMU.

So sit tight and wait till 2030 for, maybe, be able to play Switch 2 games in an emulated form.
That was on an entirely new system that had no backwards compatibility. Switch 2 uses part-emulator and part-hardware to run Switch games. I don't think this one will take 5 years. Regardless, I can wait, it's not like a single new exclusive launch title with only one other new game coming in a month and then a bunch of re-releases/remakes coming the rest of the year makes it worth a new console.

reminder that Yuzu is what it is because devs got access to a Switch dev kit

I'm sure Nintendo is 10x more strict with those now, so S2 emulation will be the reverse engineering way

for everything up to the Switch 1 emulation was the only way of properly playing Nintendo games (1440/4k, 60fps) since the consoles were pathetic. I had a Switch and preferred to emulate still, BOTW is a complete different game on CEMU vs Switch.

But now S2 offers 4k 60fps so the need is not there anymore... playing on it feels like Yuzu at 1440p/4k, just without the bugs or framedrops.

can it play new MK World? New Zeldas? New Pokemons?

maybe in 2030 when perhaps a new emulator can do it, requiring a 3k USD PC to play

as someone said above, content is king - the same reason I sold my PS5 since all exclusives are getting ported to PC, people buy the hw because of the software.

It also happens that this is the first decent console (specs wise) Nintendo has released since the GameCube.

Oh and 3rd party games are dirty cheap, have bought a few for less than what Steam charges.

Instead of complaining like a bunch of nerds that live with their moms, I recommend actually enjoying a great gaming experience without all the trash that western developers have been adding lately (e.g. ac shadows)

Agreed with "content is king". I got back into retro games, then a few other consoles that I had skipped over the years (my last new console was a PS2...). I have a newfound appreciation for Nintendo's first-party games. It's refreshing to play a game that is just a fun game. Period. No garbage, no pandering, no focus on selling you some extra content.

Nintendo's games skew "all-ages" and anything kid-friendly (Nintendo) makes an easy target for those with superiority complex and self-esteem issues. That's the big reason why the mom's-basement-dweller -crowd hate on it. A pity for them, since they are missing out thanks to this misguided idea that you can't enjoy your gaming rig and own a Nintendo too. Sometimes it is nice to just game without all the bullshit.

You do not need a 3k pc to emulate. A Steam Deck can easily emulate a Switch at the same performance level. Heck, the Z1 extreme has double the cores and a higher clock speed and that was released not much later than the Steam Deck.

Its a great gaming experience to helldive with the friends then continue building wacky thingmabobs in TOTK.

I'm not talking about emulating the OG Switch that has abysmally bad hardware.

I'm talking about emulating the Switch 2 which is 10x stronger than the OG Switch. Best of luck emulating that on the Steam deck.

Oh yeah that requires a lot more force. I think another 2-3 years before handheld hardware becomes strong enough to emulate at the same level. The Ally X already runs totk at like 53 fps or so.

Eitherway. This right here ticks me off enough to not consider ever buying a Switch 2.

As the late Linus Torvalds said to Nvidia,
.

So, Nintendo, Fuck You.

ok

in the meantime, millions of people will just enjoy a great gaming experience and not give a damn

Agreed, Nintendo charging extra for the welcome tour is egregious, at minimum it should've been free, and the console itself would have seemed like a better deal if mario kart world were bundled in with the console.

I bought 3 of them. Had to hopscotch from Target to Target to Target in order to do it, but I hit three stores within 2 hours and managed to get 3.
Sold one to my Uncle who had 3 kids and they currently have no video game consoles at all. He can bring them up with cheap Switch1 games that support 4 players.
I still have 2. Deciding whether or not to keep one for myself, but that Xbox handheld and the STEAM DECK OLED look really enticing. I have Xbox Live and I have Steam. Not sure if I should keep the Switch 2 and get a Steam Deck.

Would you like to buy a more powerful Nintendo Switch to play in 4K?

I would really like Nintendo to launch a new Nintendo Switch in about ~2 years with more powerful hardware, at least with the processing power of the PS5, to we play in 4K.

It should use stronger CPU cores and GPUs from the RTX 4000 or 5000 generation.

I bet it would be another sales success.

Gamestops near me got fresh shipment yesterday. Only the Mario Kart bundles - which in fairness is all they should be selling. You're dropping $500 - $545 on a console without a game? Ridiculous.

I bought one of the bundles and then took one of the Switch2 consoles I had back for refund from Target.

I still have one left which I'll refund on Thursday or whenever I go to charge my car.

I played Fallout Shelter and TMNT Cowabunga collection on my new Switch2. It kinda' cramps my hands. I may ultimately need a pro controller.

The Switch 2 is my first experience with Nintendo Switch. I considered buying the original Switch, but I never did because I was saving up for something better. I bought the Mario Kart bundle for $540 with tax from Gamestop.
#1 The price of this thing is too high, but I think part of that is because it's made in VIETNAM rather than China. The AC adapter is made in China.
#2 The price of the games are ridiculous. They are selling IMAGES at full price. The Switch2 cartridges don't contain the entire game and instead have roughly half the game -requiring a download. Because of that: you may as well just focus on digital downloads and then buy a Micro SDXC card when your storage runs out. I'd imagine 1TB should be enough for an entire game collection. The only games worth buying on cartridge are used games, markdowns and 4 player party games. The launch title variety was weak. I'm shocked that they had a Mario Kart game, but no Mario World platformer, Donkey Kong platformer or Smash Bros exclusive at launch. Nintendo's strength is in its first part IP. They can put out anything and it's relatively unchallenged. Switch is kid-friendly and that's its main strength.
#3 The Joycons feel good but I have large hands and I get cramps. The positioning of the D-pad and the Left analog sticks means I'm only using one of them. The Pro Controller is far more ergonomic for adult hands...
#4 ...but the pro controller is $84. Not even Xbox or PS controllers are that high.
#5 The Switch 2 camera is $55. Why isn't it built into the bridge of the system frame like a common smartphone/tablet?
#6 Battery life for Switch 2 is close to 3 hours before requiring immediate recharge. Switch OLED had a battery life of 4 and a half hours before requiring recharge which was an upgrade from Switch 1 that lasted only about 2 and a half hours.
#7 Switch 2 can game confidently but it's truly meant to be used with its included dock. The dock has a built in fan to help keep it cool during play sessions while providing 4K HDR visuals at 120 Hz on capable monitors/TVs. That means they expect you to play it when it's plugged in. The Dock only has 2 USBA ports which means you'll definitely need those expensive pro controllers to host 4 player games unless you settle for just 2 controllers on USBA and others on USBC. I think they could have left the dock out as an option. There are 3rd party docks which offer Joy Con charging and game storage (CYOYPPY has a nice organizer). The dock serves as a recharging dock for the console and an HDMI/ ETHERNET connector to speed up downloads where WiFi is weak. Ultimately, I can get by carrying a 100w GaN charger with dual ports so that I can play and charge Switch2 and my iPhone simultaneously on an airplane or in a business class lounge.
#8 Speaking of accessories: most of the Switch 2 accessories were not available at launch at all stores. The Switch 2 case from Nintendo wasn't in stock at BBY, Gamestop, Walmart or Target in large enough quantities. It was also a soft case that may not protect the precious screen well enough. There are lots of 3rd party case and dock solutions on Amazon, but what if I wanted my brands to match?

OVERALL: I LIKE IT. Maybe I'd give in 4/5 stars or a 7/10 like IGN.

The Switch gamers may not like it, but I'm enjoying it for what it is. It's expensive - far more expensive than any game console or handheld that I had as a kid in the 80's or 90's, but it's definitely an impressive step forward.
