Rosewill, a trusted name in PC components and enclosures, today announced the availability of its new THOR NAS and THOR NAS Pro chassis. Engineered specifically for building powerful, scalable, and reliable Network Attached Storage (NAS) systems, these solutions stand apart by offering massive storage capacity in a full tower, upright desktop form factor—a significant advantage over traditional rackmount chassis for home, office, and studio environments.

Designed to meet the growing demands of users requiring expansive storage without dedicated rack space, these full tower cases prioritize massive capacity, robust cooling, and user-friendly accessibility:
1. Full Tower Upright Design:
  • Desktop Placement: Unlike rackmount chassis requiring specialized cabinets, the THOR NAS series offers a conventional full tower footprint, designed to sit conveniently on or under a desk.
  • Simplified Access & Maintenance: The upright tower design provides easy front and side access for drive installation, upgrades, and maintenance without complex rail systems.
  • Aesthetic Integration: Blends seamlessly into home office or studio settings, avoiding the industrial look of server racks.

2. Exceptional Expandability with Hot-Swap Flexibility:
  • THOR NAS: Base configuration supports 11x 3.5" HDDs + 2x 2.5" SSDs via internal trays. Its true power lies in extreme scalability - equipped to accommodate up to three optional Rosewill hot-swap drive cages (sold separately). Adding these cages transforms it into a high-availability solution supporting up to 12x hot-swappable 3.5" HDDs + 2x 2.5" SSDs.
  • THOR NAS Pro: Delivers out-of-the-box readiness with 8x pre-installed hot-swappable 3.5" bays (via two included cages). This is complemented by support for an additional 5x 3.5" HDDs + 2x 2.5" SSDs via internal trays, totaling an impressive 13x 3.5" HDDs + 2x 2.5" SSDs. The Pro model offers maximum flexibility and uptime from day one.

3. Optimized Airflow & Superior Cooling in a Full Tower Chassis: The generous internal space inherent to the full tower design is a critical asset for thermal management. Combined with one pre-installed 140 mm PWM fans, and support for additional fans or liquid cooling radiators, this spacious layout ensures exceptional airflow and efficient heat dissipation for high-density drive arrays and critical components, maintaining optimal operating temperatures and long-term reliability.
4. Durability & Convenience: Sturdy steel construction ensures longevity. Both models offer front-panel newest USB 3.2 TYPE C port for ultrafast data transfer.

Target Audience & Use Cases:
  • Home Users & Media Enthusiasts: Consolidating large media libraries (photos, videos, music) in a desktop-friendly format.
  • Small/Medium Businesses & Remote Offices: Cost-effective, high-capacity file servers or backup targets without rack infrastructure.
  • Creative Professionals: Centralized, high-capacity storage for photo/video editing workflows.
  • Home Lab & Tech Enthusiasts: Building powerful custom NAS, unRAID, or TrueNAS servers.
  • Surveillance System Storage (NVR): Reliable storage for multiple camera feeds.

One 3.5" HDD per 5.25" bay? Most inefficient use of space possible for a NAS.

Also a great shame they only did 11 5.25" bays, could have fitted 20 HDDs with 3to5 converters with one more 5.25" in the front.

well the 11 5,25" bays put me off more than anything else. They just should've made the case a little bit higher so it could have 12 and then it would've been soooo much better.

damn Rosewill, now there is a name I havent heard in forever...why am I reminded of crappy psu's?

It's not rackmountable but making it rack-width would make it apealing for people who want to install it in a rack anyway (on a shelf).

This is funny, I just decide to use an old Thor V2 case I had from an old build for a new TrueNAS Server. I had to go buy a not so cheap 3 x 5.25 bay to 5 x 3.5 drive cage.
I went with the

SilverStone Technology FS305-12G Three 5.25" to Five 3.5" hot-swap SATA/SAS Hard Drive cage, up to 12Gbit/s Transfer Rate with All Aluminum Construction, SST-FS305-12G

because it is pretty slick; it holds one more HDD compared to the Rosewill offering and no drive caddies required. just slide in the drives. I don't like the cheap plastic stuff Rosewill offered.

Bad news is that the old Thor V2 5.25 drive bays have metal tabs to support a 5.25 drive in the bay. I had to bend them out of the way; without the proper tools I resorted to hammer & screw driver, but it's up and running now with 6 x 8TB drives (one not a hot swap, but accessible tray with case panel removed), boot SSD, 2nd SSD and 2 NVMe drives (not purposed yet)
