I guess the problem is that no ban/embargo is completely effective. The target can and will find a way around it somehow, no matter how tight the restrictions are.

It's a shame that AI has proliferated so quickly with seemingly little to no thought put into it. And I suspect China sabre-rattling about things like this are only going to intensify the western efforts. Which means more money wasted, more negative environmental effects, more privacy concerns etc etc.

It's a pity the career I chose is in an industry so susceptible to fads

Nvidia is such a large company they can just get off with whatever, and because of their partnerships in the US they'll never get sued for it.

No that's a silly conclusion, forever chemicals have polluted water all over the world, not just the US.
