TerraMaster, a leading storage solutions brand, introduces the D1 SSD Plus, a USB4 SSD enclosure designed for creative professionals, gamers, and mobile office users. With 40 Gbps ultra-high speed and exceptional thermal performance, it meets the demands of 4K/8K video editing, macOS boot drives, and Mac mini storage expansion, setting a benchmark for high-performance portable storage.

Key Features of D1 SSD Plus
Ultra-High-Speed USB4 Performance
Equipped with a USB4 40 Gb/s interface, the D1 SSD Plus, when paired with high-performance NVMe SSDs (e.g., Samsung 990 PRO or WD Black SN850X), achieves read speeds up to 3853 MB/s and write speeds up to 3707 MB/s. It transfers a 3 GB video in approximately 1 second, effortlessly handling 4K/8K video editing, large-scale data transfers, and application execution.

Efficient Cooling and Zero-Noise Operation
The D1 SSD Plus features an aerospace-grade aluminium alloy enclosure with large-area dual-sided cooling fins and optimized thermal design. It maintains optimal SSD temperatures without a fan, preventing performance throttling. With 0dB(A) silent operation, it meets the needs of professional recording studios and quiet office environments while ensuring long-term stability for intensive tasks like video rendering and database processing.

Premium Build and Craftsmanship
Crafted from robust aerospace-grade aluminium alloy, the D1 SSD Plus offers 300% greater strength than standard metal. Its seamless, multi-axis CNC-machined design delivers smooth edges and millimeter-level precision. The matte, frosted surface ensures a sleek appearance, perfectly complementing Mac and PC devices.

User-Friendly Design
A micro-perforated LED indicator enhances low-light usability, and a convenient installation process allows SSD replacement in just 2 minutes. Anti-slip silicone footpads reduce the risk of accidental drops. The product comes with a 2-year global warranty and lifetime technical support, ensuring data security and user satisfaction.

Wide Compatibility and Portability
The D1 SSD Plus supports 2280 M.2 NVMe SSDs and is compatible with USB4, Thunderbolt 3/4/5, and USB-C interfaces, working seamlessly with macOS, Windows, Linux, and PS5 platforms. It supports SSDs from budget models to 8 TB high-capacity drives, with compatibility for future larger-capacity SSDs. Its compact, streamlined aluminium alloy design is highly portable, catering to media creators, gamers, business professionals, and Mac mini users.

Cross-Device Smart Backup
The D1 SSD Plus includes the exclusive TDAS Mobile app (compatible with the latest iOS and Android systems) for one-tap backup of photos, videos, and data. The free TPC Backupper software supports scheduled, incremental, and differential backups on Windows 8/10/11, while Mac users can seamlessly use Time Machine, meeting the storage needs of professional photographers, home users, and business professionals.

Professional Features for Creative Work
The D1 SSD Plus supports macOS boot drive functionality, allowing direct operation of systems or applications. It is ideal for Adobe Premiere Pro 4K/8K video editing, Lightroom photo processing, and real-time data analysis, empowering creative professionals with efficient workflows.

Versatile Applications for Diverse Needs
The D1 SSD Plus caters to a wide range of professional and everyday scenarios:
  • Media Creators and Photographers: Manage 4K/8K videos and high-resolution RAW images.
  • Tech Enthusiasts and Gamers: Provide high-speed storage solutions.
  • Business Professionals: Support mobile office and travel needs.
  • Mac mini Users: Serve as storage expansion or macOS boot drive.
  • General Users: Meet daily mobile storage requirements.

Thats a massive heatsink(not that I am going to complain if it keeps the drive cool) to carry around.

Got to have big pockets..

It seems the enclosure is using the ASMedia ASM2464PD/PDX chipset. I had an enclsure with that chipset and using it on MacOS gave issues with random disconnect now and then. Moved over to an enclosure with an Intel Thunderbolt chipset instead and the problems went away. So maybe think of that if you plan to use the enclosure on MacOS. I guess it's fine on Windows and Linux.

But maybe TerraMaster has been able to fix this?
It sure looks like a nice enclosure with that large cooler which is needed for today's NVMe drives – they can get very hot.

Yet another enclosure that bottle-necks the M.2 NVMe drive by using a USB interface. I have my 2TB Samsung 990 Pro in a JEYI enclosure which is 92x33x8mm or 3.62"x1.3"x0.31" in size and costs about US $10.00. Under normal use it only ever gets warm. It uses a M.2 interface and is connected directly to my mini ITX motherboards PCIe Gen 4.0 x 16 slot via a short US $7.00 ribbon cable and US$3.00 card. The ribbon cable could also go into any M.2 motherboard slot. Of course it can't be used with other computers because we don't have a M.2 port on the back IO plate. This is why I would like to see a one there instead of the mainly useless M.2 port under the motherboard that is a real pain to swap out if it's used at all. Now compare this enclosures size, transfer speed and cost to what is possible if only....here is my CrystalDiscMark for the Samsung 990 Pro and the enclosure used.

That model doesnt cost $10 and outputting 40 Gb/s

Just checked the price US$10.16 but there may be import taxes to add in your country. I can only show you what my transfer speeds are..... whether you believe it I don't really care. The readings are pretty much inline for a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro in a Gen 4 M.2 socket but I'm using a PCIe 4.0 extension cable to a home made dock.

This ASM powered model utilizes USB4v1, so 40 Gb/s, yeah. It does actually speak PCIe 4 4x and supports a whole host of PCIe features.

You'll have to wait for USB4v2 for 80-120 Gb/s speeds. We're seeing the first drive enclosures on the market now, hopefully more soon.
For realistic portable storage though, even 40 Gb/s is quite fast, but it'll be nice to see more efficient PCIe Gen 5 stuff.

The article says Samsung 990 PRO or WD Black SN850X, achieves read speeds up to 3853 MB/s and write speeds up to 3707 MB/s. USB whatever version never reaches it's theoretical top speed not even Thunderbolt via USB Type-C. PCIe Gen5 stuff is very expensive and heat issues are still a problem.
