Western Digital Corp. today introduced the world's only manufacturer-produced clear-top hard drive, WD Raptor X. The unique 10,000 RPM Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives feature 150 GB capacity, 16 MB cache and Native Command Queuing (NCQ) for peak performance. WD Raptor X features a large clear lens embedded in the top through which the read and write action of the drive's head and disk assembly can be viewed while the drive delivers data, audio and video content and games to PC. WD Raptor X 150 GB (model WD1500AHFD) hard drives are expected to be shipping in volume this quarter on the company's online store. Estimated retail pricing for WD Raptor X is $349.99 USD. I must say that new Raptor X hard drive is awesome, just look at the pictures here. There's even video and 3D view.

I orded one of the non-windowed Raptors yesterday.

I've never cared for the incredible gayness of windows and lights in computers, especially cause there's nothing interesting to look at. But with this, the only moving component of a computer (besides fans), a window might be cool. The video on WD site of the windowed one is pretty cool. The spindle ablur, the needle jumping to and fro. I would cut and paste files just to watch that.

lol! I have no use for such a drive. You can't see the drive cover in my case. I'd want to get me a normal 150GB Raptor though any day. Still a bit too expensive for my taste unfortunately. ;)

Agreed except I'd want the windowed one. But my 74gb's in RAID 0 is as fast or faster than that single 150gb, and I'm not about to pop $700 for two of those suckers.

Definitely. Although two 150GB Raptors will dominate anything non-SCSI easily. And true, if I had $700 I'd spend it on something else than two 150GB Raptors.
