Most of you will remember the story about the high school student living in Pennsylvania that was supposedly given detention for using Firefox as a web browser in class. Well, that turned out to be a hoax. The student had altered the detention letter and submitted it to digg.com where the story received over 8,000 hits. Big Spring High School, the school the student attends in Pennsylvania, was bombarded with phone calls from the media and from people all across the globe voicing their displeasure. The calls persisted for two days and as a precaution the school called in IT security experts from Penn State to monitor the districts network. Lawyers were also consulted and finally a letter was posted by the principal of the school stating the letter was indeed a hoax. This is just one amazing example of how the Internet is shaping and changing the way we view and respond to current events.
