A week ago, the Inquirer posted some details about the look of Blu-Ray DVD cases. Now they have some pictures of the HD-DVD variant. Thy will be in dark, semi-transparent red, will have a completely different size compared to normal DVD or Blu-Ray cases and - this is the worst - "the red strip at the top, it adds a lip so it appears that they won't stack flat". So it seems you cannot use a shelf for all your Movies, and you even have to choose between Blu-Ray or HD-DVD when buying one. With DVD-R and DVD+R at least the cases were the same.

Geeze, BetaMax or VHS? I thought that a full length HD Movie would exceed the capacity of a normal dual layer DVD - did I miss something... I.E. - is HD-DVD a different dic format?

HD-DVD is a new format that uses shorter wave-length lasers to increase the storage capacity. At the moment they can hold up to 90GB on one disc... ;)

Blue laser = shorter wavelength = more data on same technology.

Thanks, I knew there were two (or more) battling formats, but I never knew that HD-DVD was actually a disc format itself. Yes, I do know about the different spectrum technologies and data density.

The blu-ray holds 45 GB, correct? Or is that for just one layer?

The contenders are HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. A while back they managed to make a quad-layered blu-ray disc that could hold 100GB. So the formats are pretty close to each other... It seems that Microsoft wants to make the HD-DVD format more popular while Sony wants the same thing for Blu-Ray with the PS3.

I thought I remember reading about more than two layers. 100GB is a lot (for now). I wonder if the HD-DVD uses a similar wavelength as blu-ray. Blu-ray sounds more compelling... yes, I'm a consumer :)
