Intel Demonstrates Seamless WiFi, WiMAX Video Roaming

Today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Intel Research demonstrated a "first" in wireless communication, jointly developed with Nokia R&D and Nokia Siemens Networks R&D. The researchers showed a wifi/wimax heterogeneous seamless hand-over based on 802.21. This makes it possible to run a video conferencing application, for example, on a mobile internet device and seamlessly roam between WiFi and WiMAX networks, with no viewing disruption. And better yet, no user interaction necessary to go find a new available wireless network and connect. yep sounds good but its all useless as most ISP's here are either privately owned (belonging to somebody) or they are public access points but require users to register or pay a small service fee.

also for this 'seamless' technology - All isps who host hot spots have to agree to let users from other networks on to their network without paying a service charge. so there has to be some negotiation between them about the 'hand offs' as 1 network signal gets weaker forcing the device to search for other 'free' services.

people & ISP's dont want freeloaders hogging bandwidth - im one of the lucky few who actually has 2 open access hot spots near me (yeehaw! free net 24/7)
