It seems that America and the United Kingdom aren't the only countries caught in a sudden desire to become authoritarian. Pakistan is blocking websites that they feel either will pervert their citizens culturally or politically. YouTube recently made the list for both reasons. There's plenty of sketchy X-rated material on the website, and it's cousin, X-tube. However, it's more likely than not that YouTube was blocked in Pakistan due to political footage. To be precise, someone managed to sneak proof of election fraud, in video form, onto YouTube. Pakistan obviously doesn't want anybody to see this, so they bury the video. When it comes bouncing back later, Pakistan got mad and completely blocked out the site.

Isn't anyone else as creeped out by that as i am?

hopefully we dont follow suit (us)

If its not Pakistan then its China or someone else glad i live in oz.

No but they deserv it in some instances.

we see more idiot with video cameras doing stupid things example like assaulting a young retarded girl and posting it and thinking it’s funny yeh go YouTube.

hmm, dont this just incriminate them?

I'm creeped out by the government intervention as well as the people (world wide) who would upload or publish such things on the internet.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. When something can bring down a government is out there, they will prevent it/control its distribution by any means necessary. It's fairly easy in most countries like Pakistan/China as there are few major media players and they are already controlled or easily taken over by the governemnt.

It would be more difficult to do something like that in the US, as its' media machine would be all over the story, and then 10's of thousands of lawyers would be lining up to challenge it. That doesn't happen in other countries (or if it does, the lawyers/judges are arrested/imprisoned).

Not shocked at all.

Pervez Musharaf wants to stay in power. Of course, it would only make sense he would want to block Youtube. However, I thought I heard on the last count, that he was defeated and was asking the new parliamentary members for leniency or some such stuff as that.

What makes me mad is he is a president but is also a dictator. Bush and the US are backing him because he is important for the war on terror. A war, he doesnt really help us on. Anyways, Im not going to get into a political discussion and rant on this, but it doesnt surprise me that he or someone in his government did this.

Couldn't you get around the ban with Tor or something?

Also, what happens to all the other sites that people can put any video on? Nothing.

+1. Does not surprise me either. Supposedly he is helping us with the war on terror, yet all intell points to the top terror leaders in the tribal areas and has for over a year. With this said, nothing of substance has been done to search this area of Pakistan. What gives? I personally think we should roll over the border from Afghanistan and take care of business ourselves. In and out. If Pakistan is really our ally they won't have a problem with that, right?

Anyway, back on topic, YouTube (in general) should get a better grip on the tastefulness of their content. I'm all for free speech and expression, but kids can access YouTube daily and see some of the less responsible posts. I'm pretty sure that's not why Pakistan banned the site, but I would like to see YouTube step up a bit. (Rant is now complete)

Pakistan needs to get its act together and kill Bin Laden before we go in their country and kill him for them. Benazir Bhutto died as a result of saying that she would go after the terrorists in the deadly regions of Pakistan. Who else will die at the hands of Al Qaida before their organization is finally destroyed?

It doesn't creep me out. This is nothing compared to the shit the middle-east does every day,

Man gets arrested for walking dog in Tehran.
American woman arrested in Saudi for talking to a man in Starbucks.
Woman gets 200 lashings after being 7X gang-raped for talking to a man in a car.
Men publicly hanged for being gay.

This youtube censorship is nothing news-worthy.

Sucks to live in pakistan

If any of you think that you live in total freedom or couldn't be given a hell of a beat down or killed no questions asked by your government you are stupid.

Everytime you register for something, go shopping, visit websites, or pump your gas you are being tracked. Every e-mail, text, and call you make is tracked. Most companies call it some snazzy name like "Customer Service Improvement" or some shit like it. But you are being tracked, and then these companies build a profile of you they sell to other companies, or to the government, or to identity thieves.

http://epic.org/privacy/profiling/

There are multiple companies in addition to the large three credit reporting agencies that track your purchases, and many other aspects of your life if you are a American citizen, and that information is bought and sold by the government. You are a commodity, and will be treated as such.

If I can find the video on the internet I saw on Discovery a few weeks ago I will post a link. But there is a company in the easetern part of the US that has more computational power and storage than Google and houses millions on millions of profiles that your credit card companies, safeway card, bank, and many other places submit their information to to mine it for data so they can send you customized ads, and to find out what the market is doing. But the flip side is that all your purchases are tracked, and they are able to tell almost everything about you.

acxiom is the name of the company I believe.

Youtube and Xtube are related? I thought they were owned by different people and the name was just a spinoff. Either way, I'm just glad I'm not a citizen of Pakistan. God bless the tubes.

I didnt even no about xtube even tho if i checked it out my gf would kill me.

A lot more things about Pakistan you guys don't know  this is just the tip of the iceberg.
There indeed is very pseudo political system there, people trade power. You Tube just caught up in the whole tangle Pakistan's president created, of an extremely superficial, pseudo-political system. The elections were just an eye-wash for the world. No international media covers Pakistan better than Indian, so these are first hand accounts.

But I soo didn't want Mrs. Bhutto to die :shadedshu that lady was far more gutsy than any of the 'men' in power, she had what it took to set things right in that country.

i feel for the people in Pakistan
i mean the incest people of course, not the terrorist and all the crazy folks!

How is the UK authoritarian?

Seems like the west runs the world to me. "pervert their citizens culturally or politically" Islamics try this in ever country they settle in. This is always happening in the UK telling us to change our british ways / culture /Rules To suit them.My Daughter cant even have a Christmas play because theres mixed cultures in the school and dont want to offend anyone!.This saddens me a great deal i mean who would'nt want to see there kids first school play? Its about time our Politicians grew some balls and told them if u don't like it lump it.

This isnt a racist comment. Nor am i racist im quite happy to let them get on with what they belive in as long as it does'nt effect what i belive in as a british citizen.
