Plextor Readies New Internal Blu-Ray Drives with LightScribe and HD DVD Capabilities

After our brand new TechPowerUp Reader Survey 08 results, it's time for some news coming from Plextor. The firm has released two new multifunction disc drives that combine next-generation Blu-Ray and HD DVD technologies. I'll start with the more sophisticated model the PX-B920SA, a Blu-Ray and Blu-Ray DL (50GB) burner that plays HD DVD discs and supports high-speed reading and recording of DVD and CD formats, including DVD-RAM and Dual/Double Layer DVDs. The internal drive features 4X BD-R write speed, Serial ATA (SATA) interface, 4MB buffer and Lightscribe disk labeling. Second in order is the PX-B300SA, a multifunction drive capable of only playing both Blu-Ray and HD DVD media, while DVD and CD burning features remain presented. Other than that, the PX-B300SA is identical to the PX-B920SA model. Both drives support Buffer Underrun Proof technology and come with one year full warranty. They are also bundled with a complete package of application software, including InterVideo WinDVD 8, Ulead MovieFactory 5.5 SE, and Burn.Now 4.5 SE. The PX-B920SA costs $599 while the PX-B300SA Blu-Ray/HD DVD reader ships for $499.

Very expensive, but cool that you can play $10 HD-DVDs with them and not waste your money! This is exactly what the market needs to get rid of all those HD-DVDs. Expect the prices to rise a bit and level off at a little over DVDs, though.

This is exactly what the market needed 6-12 months ago. Today, there is no way someone will pay a significant premium for a dead format. If the PX-B300SA was priced at $250 and it would be a competitive product. But $499? Thats $499-$50 (price of a good DVD burner) = $449 premium just for the ability to play HD DVD content? Thats just way too high.

Prices are lower than when the first BD players came out. They get below $200.00 and Ill grab one.

I guess this is a pretty nice burner/reader... still way too expensive for me but for those determined individuals who want to save all of their home videos on a couple Blu-Ray discs, this would be perfect for them.

we are all forgetting to take note that this is plextors ploy...they are always overrated over priced piece of craps that are no better than any liteon drives.

if you are spending more than 50 bucks on a dvd burner, you are spending WAY to much to make your E-Penis longer!


But what I do like about the drive is that It does support HD-DVDs. I'm sorry I still think HD-DVDs where the way of the future LOL!

I have a dvd burner lg...but I don't see on the market a single one dvd double layer.

dude thats a LG and yeah i'd rather go with that. Though LG products tend to be priceier than Liteon its still good stuff.
